Great job on the video. It is just what I needed to watch before starting the job. Our 2006 matrix has a very rough idle when stopped at a light. I tried new spark plugs, engine mounts, and throttle body cleaning. This is the last thing left to try.

@@automotivetv9861 Nope. The IAC I ordered on Amazon that was suppose to fit was not even close as my car has an integrated unit on the side of the throttle body. I purchase the entire throttle body which was only about $60 instead of the $30. I would be happy if it worked, but it is exactly the same. Still a rough idle. The good thing was it was pretty easy to install! PS. Never got a "check engine" light or an error code.

@@DYI Heyyy, try changing your spark plugs to ngk bkr5GP plugs , theyre cheap. that solved my rough idle!

@DYI so you bought a new iac and throttle body and it didn't work? Did you leave it installed in the car?

yes, I figured it couldn't hurt, but I did replace the Toyota one with an after market one, but the old one was 17 years old. It would be too much of hassle to put the old one back and try to get a refund. We ended up taking the car into the dealer and paying $200 for an inspection. They said it needed a $5000 transmission so we are just living with it@@TomMac1

Use JIS screwdriver bits or JIS screwdrivers...these screws are Japanese Industrial Standard....NOT Phillips.

If you use a JIC screwdriver, then you will most likely get the screws out without stripping them. Normal Philip head screwdriver will cam out.

What about the throttle body gasket to the intake manifold? Was that able to be reused?

IAC on my 2006 Corolla is humming which could be solenoid stuck or not actuating properly. Toyota wants 700 or so for new IAC unit. Would cleaning it with EGR/carb cleaner help or would it be best to replace part with used IAC valve instead? Only hums on idle at around 700rpm.

Its in the name, 'Idle' Air Control Valve.. symptoms will be your RPM jumping from 1k-3k and/or car lunging while switching to Neutral or Park.

The screws in mine are rusted as they are original from 2003. Any suggestions aside from breaking off?

Tap them with a hammer before trying to unscrew. We do this with Lug nuts that are really stuck on, it jolts it enough to break free from the corrosion. Use some spray lube beforehand as well.

My 2005 Corolla has an IAC valve that is integrated into the throttle body, so it isn't like this repair.

What was the reason for replacing the IAC? What were the symptoms ?

Code P0505. Matrix had a rough idle, the rpms would rev up and fall sporadically when in park, and sometimes engine would stall out on cold start or when quickly decelerating to a stop.

Is there a special type of screwdriver needed to unscrew the IAC valve from the throttle body without damaging the screws? For practice I tried removing them from a car in the junkyard but always ended up stripping them.

@@magpie92766 they are like a special type of star shaped Torx screw neither of mechanic friends had. They REALLY don't want you getting in there. It's the only real way to clean the the magnet that makes the valve work, but I just settled on cleaning it the best I could with it still on. I guess it worked, but the idle now gets pretty damn low on my Celica...

@@rushnerd I replaced my stepfather's IAC last weekend. I had one of the screwdrivers that has 5 bits in the handle & it had 2 star screws, one of which fit. I was surprised to find a match in there.

The carbon and gunk is sucked from the air intake to the throttle body which also contains the EGR gases... so over time this cakes onto the moving parts of the IAC and then the IAC jams...at 1500 to 2000rpm idle... or way down low like 400rpm... since the IAC internal shaft can't move to regulate the air valve...

I have an 03 corolla with rough idle when stopped. New icv, plugs, coil packs, intake manifold gaskets, MAF sensor, cleaned throttle body no luck. Ive noticed the level of roughness in the idle corresponds to the amount of electrical load, meter looks ok so im confused, also checked for vacuum leaks on brake booster just to be thorough. Car has had this problem since 40k, now its at 190k, nobody has been able to find it. Im at limit on money, just gonna keep driving it and put in neutral when stopped, no codes either, new catalytic converter and 02 sensors at 160k because they were stolen.. id buy a new car except we have so many gunpoint robberies around here, this looks like trash so im left alone.

Me too i got rough idle when stopped in drive, when put in neutral it idles better. new plugs, cleaned TB, maf, pcv valve, fuel injector cleaning, switched to mobil1 full synthetic oil, replaced entire exhaust system since it rusted completely. its a 2004 corolla at 240k. gonna try a coolant change next. Hope you stay safe man. I am lucky to live in relatively safe area.

I'm gonna do injector tests after holidays, that's literally the last thing unless it's the engine itself or the transmission is freaked out but it drives beautiful... I should say if it is an injector ill feel dumb. I guess the dealer could find it but I suspect they'd charge thousands.

@posadist681 Me too, 03 pontiac vibe 238,500 miles. Cleaned MAF sensor, new spark plugs and coils, fuel system clean, radiator flush, oil change. Idles rough except for when in neutral, idle changes but is still rough when I turn on the air, runs great any other time.
