The first step is engage park brake or block the wheels. The reason being when you take the shaft off the parking gear is no longer in use.

“They” always say crap like that. Midas said the front struts would cost $750!just to take them off the vehicle no parts etc. Since then I haven’t had anyone but myself work on my vehicles and I have saved 1,000’s of dollars. Great video.

No actually the drive shaft is balanced to its self just like a car tire. You dont need to mark the drive shaft if new joints are in. Same goes for your tires they are balanced to rhe rim as they dont need to be marked either. Sleep well u dunn'er right 💪

The hubs at the front and back can be reversed 180°. It's very easy to make sure you install the hubs the same way they came off, for front and back. It might not matter but why take a chance.

Good info video. I do want to add a few things if I may: I have an 87 Dakota 4WD 3.9L and have went thru several main drive shaft U-jjoints myself. While the transmission spline (front) U-joint wears out faster than the rear end U-joint, I make it a habit to just replace both to save myself from any future remorse. (Just like front or rear brake pads and shoes, I think it best to replace both driver's and passenger's sides.) Some U-joints, like on the Dakota, also use inside mounted C-clips instead of an outside seated spring clip as shown in the video. Everything is pretty simple to remove with a little patience. And plenty of wd40 or pb blaster never hurts before starting! And finally: YES! Be careful and meticulous puting it back together. I promise you all its not as easy as it looks! God Bless!

Used this vid to help with my 03 ram. Thank you! I’ll add that I hammered the caps out, but used a C-clamp to press them back in. Less hammering on these weak parts always seems safer. Used greaseable Ujoints and Also added a little grease to the slip yoke when reinstalled. But thanks for the vid! 👍👍

Good video. Personally I put a little extra grease in the caps to help hold the needle bearings in place which also helps keep the cap in place. Also after the u joints are installed, I always hit the housing that holds the joint with a hammer to seat the u joint in place. It pivots way better after seating them. Keep up the great work!

Did my front driveshaft u joints near tires in the front on ram 2500 2014 tradesman 6.4l and I used a press, pb blaster penetrating spray, a torch, and even the hammer and socket method aswell as a couple others on my shop vice, if none of those work for y’all, just do what I did and be super careful around the boots or ears where the u joints go in and cut the necks off with an angle grinder for stubborn u joints, then hammer out the rest works way quicker and easier for stubborn u joints that are seized mine where inside c clips 👍🏻

You mentioned that it’s your third ball joint/U joint. And still going strong. Might be worth replacing that Chip part is it’s throwing the joint out of balance. Hence the reason why you’re on your third one.

three ways: - when you feel/hear a clunk when shifting to D or R, or even on acceleration - vibration is felt when up to a certain speed - engage e-brakes, chock wheels, shift to N. crawl under truck with a pry bar. use pry bar on front and rear end of drive shaft and feel for play. any play at all means the u-joints need replacing. you may not even need a pry bar to feel the play

I don't think this matters. It's a rotational balance, like your wheels. When you take a wheel off and put it back onto the same hub it doesn't matter if the wheel is clocked the same as before. Also there isn't a lot of mass extending beyond the axis of rotation so the slight imperfection of balance caused by offsetting the ujoint clock by 90 degrees is likely negligible.
@frankmurray9353
