How To Replace An Input Shaft Speed Sensor or Mainshaft Speed Sensor P0716 / P0717 / P0718

Today we're showing how to replace an automatic transmission input shaft speed sensor (or mainshaft speed sensor). This sensor works in conjunction with the output shaft (or countershaft) speed sensor and allows for normal, smooth transmission shifts. A faulty sensor will more than likely display the 'check engine light' on your vehicle's dashboard, hard shifting and an inoperable cruise control. It is possible to test the sensor, along with the PCM (power control module), but you need a very sophisticated and incredibly expensive scan tool to do so.
P0716 - Input shaft speed sensor range/performance error.
P0717 - Input shaft speed sensor no signal error.
P0718 - Input shaft speed sensor intermittent failure error.

Pretty simple, but.... some cars need to have the transmission pulled to replace the INPUT Speed sensor. Had this issue with my 07 Suburban. On some vehicles there is a Big difference between replacing a speed sensor and replacing an "Input" speed sensor. Thanks for the video.

I have 2002 CL500 limp mode in the transmission only allow me to do 40 miles an hour it's stuck in second gear so I put it on a computer input shaft speed sensor do I need to replace both sensors the input and output now this is some w215 Mercedes-Benz 2-door CL500

Hello, I have an 89 grand marquis and thought to change my transmission speed sensor as I’ve heard it can help with sloppy shifting as well as bouncy speedometer as this one sensor has both inputs. After changing the sensor (which was fairly simple to do) I bolted the negative wire back on the battery, went to start the car, but got no crank at all. Battery and electricity comes on fully charged, but starter is not even trying to crank. I tested the starter and it isn’t the starter. I am going to switch back to the old sensor tomorrow and see if it starts again, but would love to get any input you may have of this particular situation. Thank you for your time 🙏

@@zachhuffman9336 my year and model has two black on off switches located on either side of the ash tray right under the front dash radio. The left switch turned out to be a kill switch for the starter which I unknowingly turned on. Switched it back to off and starter worked as normal. Right switch is a kill switch for the trunk opener button. For nearly 2 weeks I couldn’t figure it out and thought I had ruined something electrical while trying to learn and repair which made me kinda depressed. I wanted to die when I realized it was the kill switch

Good morning, I left my Koleos 1 2.0 dci automatic gearbox this week at the garage to change the crankshaft seal on the flywheel side. I picked up my car today, I did 50km on the motorway without any problem, it went through all the gears and was smooth, and when I got to town, my gearbox started having trouble shifting into first gear, then at one point it got stuck in 3rd gear. When I switched to manual, it remained in D. Finally, a message "regulator to check" appears. By restarting the car, it's ok for a few minutes then it starts again. I went back to the garage, we did a diagnosis and when we accelerate, the turbine speed is at 0 when we accelerate, and this blocks the gear change, we have to restart the car. Here are the diagnostic errors: - P01717: turbine speed sensor circuit (active) - P1525: consistency of multiplexed information for cruise control, the information is not compliant (active) - P074491: torque converter clutch ev function, converter lockout control (memory). Do you know where this could come from please?

just to help people out.... my vehicle threw code for output shaft speed sensor and no communication to tcm.... theres input and output transmisson speed sensors! both com.. with pcm and ecm and tcm all on same can bus network. i replaced the output the codes cleared and retsored com to tcm. car started was no start, but.... i noticed the rpm gauge didnt work at all! the rest of cluster was fine fuses were good, so i discovered that input shaft tells pcm and rest of network the rpm and top of tranny speed, the output measures the actual axles or wheel speed. not engauged while in park. but rpms and input shaft are! hopes its helps someone! cars suck now!!! i want back basics no computer crap!!! v8s and carbs!!! there scamming us all so we cant work on own cars anymore! stick together help one another!!!

I have a p0717 code in my 2007 mercedes benz c230. My car is in limp mode and when i put it in reverse or drive the whole car violently thumps when switching. Can I assume the input speed sensor will fix this? Theres no other codes besides this one.

Pls help me. !!! I have a Fiat Punto 2011 dualogic.I have p0720 fault code at "only and always" 130 km/h speed. When the car is under 120 km/h code (warning) is disappearing.i changed the oss 2 times and complete gearbox, transmission fluid. Still same problem. :(What do u think? Where should i look to fix it? Why always at 130 km/h ?? Do u think that it's about bad connector?

I'm afraid that vehicle isn't sold over the 'pond'. However, typically, trouble code p0720 is the sensor or harness connector.

HELP!! is it possible for the sensor to come apart inside the trani? When I go to remove what I'm 90% sure is my OUTPUT speed sensor there is an umbilical of four wires holding it in?! When sticking my finger inside to trace where those wires are going 3 of the four aren't connected to anything?? The Input and Output speed sensors sense the difference between engine speed and output shaft/wheel speed. You may have a 3rd speed sensor, like I do, that is strictly for the speedometer.
