Learn how to replace a leaky brake master cylinder in this video. I also show you how to bench bleed the new cylinder before installing it on the car and also how to bleed the brakes once you've installed it.
This is on a 2001 Kia Sportage but that is unimportant. The information in this video is universal to all cars without anti-lock brakes.

Amazing seeing a car and brake system without a toal enxrustment of RUST...servicing cars in the North East and Rustbelt is a whole different job...how nice itt would be to not deal with seazed, rusted nipples crimped rusty brake lines ..and the desasters from moving or losening a rust encased line..like they all are under an older Norhtern car...that was a joy to watch...tnx

Thanks for your Video it was very helpful and the camera works was clear. Your explanation was easy to understand. I've watched a couple Videos on the Brake Bleeding subject and both were excellent as was yours. Keep up the good work. I love KZfaq and how helpful it's been. I'm a "show me" guy, as you can tell me all day about doing this, but only a Video like this one will "trigger" my comprehension. Thanks again.

Alot of great info here and great camera work. These are the type of do it yourself videos that actually help people and show proper technique. Another tid bit is (at your own discretion) that you can go jam your brakes up going down a open road are parking lot to make your abs activate a few times and rebleed the system if in a pinch and you have to. Keep up the good work.

Good video, especially for older cars that do not have ABS brakes or TRAC systems. As you mentioned, those systems probably need bleeding also after changing out the master cylinder. If you are a competent mechanic or DYI mechanic with a proper repair manual for your individual car, you can bleed these systems yourself. Just follow instructions carefully and be aware that ABS and TRAC pumps are high pressure. Don't hurt yourself if you try to bleed those systems. Otherwise, a very good video with good information. Would like to see another using a pressurized brake bleeding system. Dr D

I've seen the bleed kit's tubing clip used on a master cylinder reservoir that has 2 isolated sections for fluid [2 separate fluid circuits provide for braking in the event of one circuit's failure]. The plastic hose clip fastens on the 'wall' that separates these sections. The BMC shown in this video has 2 circuits; however, it looks as though they share the same reservoir. If so, this suggests that the failure of one circuit [e.g., via a leak] could drain the entire supply of fluid from the reservoir . . . leaving the car with no brakes.

IF you can get to the fittings on the booster... You can use the fittings as bleeder valves. With them snug, have someone pump up the brakes and while they hold it, crack open the fitting on the front, the air will come out. Snug it. Have them let off the pedal. Fluid will be pulled out of the reservoir. Do both ports. Then bleed the calipers and wheel cylinder as usual.

I have a front wheel drive 2003 Toyota Celica GTS and the brake bleeding order isn't from the right rear 1st, then left rear. Some Hondas and other front wheel drive vehicles have a different bleeding order. Make sure to always check your manual or verify the correct bleeding order for your vehicle

The bleed sequence can vary with different cars, not necessarily the 2 rear wheels then 2 front wheels.My Altima is something like RR, LF, LR, RF. Search online for sequence for your vehicle.

FYI you can buy a scan tool for a little over $100 that will tell the ABS module to bleed. Since every car today has ABS, you might need to use one of those from time to time to make sure any bubble are out of it.

HI..I really enjoy your VIDEOS, especially because have a 1998 automatic KIA SPORTAGE NON ABS..I need to do exactly this job in a few days, so thank you Exactly what size flare wrench are you using to remove the 2 lines at the MASTER CYLINDER? I am afraid to strip them..they seem rusted..you turn the wrench counterclockwise, correct? Also are the bleeder screws at the brakes the same size flare wrench as the master cylinder 2 lines?? thanks!! Hope u can answer asap!

Hi ther ,shouldn’t you use a pry bar to hold the brake pedal using the car’s seat then you close the Valve ? And I am sure your car has a ABS system , so what precautions we must take to avoid problems with ABS ?

When you use that method of bleeding I believe you need a small hole in the cap to allow air to escape

The warning about the anti-lock brake was only for replacing the master cylinder and not for regular bleeding, correct?
@50sKid
@50sKid 8 жыл бұрын
+12vgs8606 Yes, correct. Basically, if air gets in BEFORE the master cylinder (ie you run the reservoir dry), the dealer will have to bleed the system for you.

so if i am replacing my brakes, while i am changing the master cylinder, would just bleeding the brakes at the caliper be ok, or should i bleed the cylinder and the calipers?
@kenalsobrook6646
@kenalsobrook6646 9 ай бұрын
If you don't bleed the cylinder first you will have to keep bleeding the lines as the residual air is pushed out into the brake lines. Would require more brake fluid and more time.

Be certain that bleeder screws are open. It should take less pressure than when you are braking on the road.

Why are most recommendations to fasten the master before installing lines? I think it's much easier to get the lines on when master can be moved around a bit. Why do all the bleed vids just have 2 lines. Most vehicles I've worked on have 3 or 4 'ports' to deal with.
@50sKid
@50sKid 8 жыл бұрын
+Jay Last You're right, I suppose it would be easier to get the threads started a bit before you bolt the master down. They have 2 lines because they are older, non-abs cars. They have 2 circuits, 1 feeds left front & right rear and the other right front & left rear. This way if one of them corrodes and leaks, you still have front and rear braking.

so when you bench bleed a master cylinder with 4 ports, how do you work with the kit? Do you need 4 tubes?
@eideticex
@eideticex 5 жыл бұрын
@@50sKid A lot of modern cars have 2 lines with ABS. One set of lines will go to Front-Right and Rear-Left while the other to Front-Left and Rear-Right. A proportioning valve will be somewhere in the system to balance the pressure between the wheels. That approach is essentially what does the anti-lock for the back wheels. One of the fail modes for the proportioning valve is your rear wheels locking up when you press the brakes, the other fail mode is they barely get any braking power at all (depends if it's stuck open or stuck closed).

@fatwalletboy2

Yeah but not inside the main body of the master where they were before as you cant force air back into it. This is the reason you bleed all corners to remove that newly introduced air.
