How to replace and upgrade bathroom vanity lighting DIY video

Today we are going to show you how we replaced our old and ugly bathroom vanity light to a new and upgraded bathroom vanity light. We purchased this specific light, the Sunset Lighting F3683-44
Oil Bronze 3 Light 300 Watt Bathroom Vanity Light, at build.com. We will show you how we removed the old lighting and installed the new lighting. Make sure you always turn off the power before you start working with anything electrical. We hope these tips will help you as you upgrade your bathroom lighting. Always twist the wires clockwise and wrap the ground wire around the screw clockwise. This way as you tighten the wire nut or screw, the wires are held tightly in place.

Are you saying twisting the wires the same direction as tightening the wire nut like what is shown at 6:17?

@@flystar1999 At 5:57 she twists the white wires counter clockwise, which is incorrect. She twists the black wires correctly, clockwise.

Just a quick tip: it helps to take picture of the wiring just to make sure you know how to reconnect them correctly.

Previous owners half assed the install and the mounting screws in drive wall gave out. I need a backplate such as the one on this or i would have to cut out the bad drywall

There needs to be an old work/remodel type recessed box to make this code compliant.

Thankyou for pointing that out, I just replaced my bathroom vanity and purchased a pancake junction box for mine since it was in the manual and housing code you are supposed to have one. I was watching this and asking myself too where is her junction box

This is a code violation since the fixture needs a junction box installed in the drywall. Old work boxes should be installed when you find illegal wiring like this. Hope that fixture doesn't start a fire...if it does your insurance may not pay out due to the code violation.

what about that short bit of ground wire you placed through a space by its self at the left??????? does that stand alone just like that????? because it can come in contact with the other wire that is just tightened with a screw???????????????You lost me there I rewind the video to see if I missed anything but I didnt!!!!!!! hummmmmm

As someone that works in electrical, I was yelling at the tv when I seen that lol. That ground wire coming from the conductor has to be connected to that screw as well. I really hope they went back later and fixed this. It can be a dangerous problem later if something shorts out.

What about the ground wire that came out of the wall, the one you pulled through the hole on the side?

@intheparlance thanks for your question. the ground wire that comes out of the wall should be connected to the ground wire coming from the new. You can use a screw on wire connector to make the connect the wires. Thanks again and hopefully you subscribe to Big Al repairs.

They didn't turn it on after I'm guessing that's because you didn't connect the two ground wires and out the cap on it first

EZLight - that's genius! How close to the lights is the shade. My concern is fire safety.

@@ddschannel2953 they should be about 1/2 inch away but we always recommend replacing with LED bulbs because the light is so much better and the heat generated is dramatically less (and energy savings!) The shade design allows heat to rise - plus in most cases use the less expensive LED's not round ones because they are hidden.

Like that you were unhurried and showed things up close. I was worried at the end when the electricity was back on and your installer was sticking fingers up inside the shades while screwing them on near where bulbs go. I would have turned the power back off. One poke too far and yikes.

Dont you need to attach the ground wire from the wall to the same screw that you attached the ground wire from the lamp?

Thank you for the reply. Electrical tasks are the one thing I have never done. The ground wire is something that has not been clear to me. If the wire is way to long should I clip it shorter. My fixture has two black wires and two white wires, do I attached both sets, black to black and white to white and cap each set of three wires.

Are the two main screws screwed into the sheet rock or the 2x4s?

True, some people should probably use dry wall anchors if their light fixture is not going to be screwed into studs. We should have taken the time to explain that. This light fixture is extremely light. Most of our screws were going into studs and also the light fixture before, which was actually heavier, hung for 30 years in the exact same area with out any issues.

Yes there is a need for a junction box. We discovered that when we went to make the change. I couldn't believe that whoever built this home did not include a junction box.

Dumb installer hung the fixture and left the feed wires to be crushed by the fixture during installation. Isn't anybody watching and editing the videos after uploading ??!! She is also hanging the fixture without installing an electrical box, as is required by the National Electrical Code. Dumb installer!
