I guess you missed all the other comments about this. I wouldn't recommend cutting clamps off the way I did; I did it for entertainment. The fuel hose is there specifically to contain fuel so outside of it spraying fuel under pressure, there's no real danger provided you don't cut through the hose. On top of that, the fuel pump itself is a brushed motor that sits in the fuel tank. It doesn't explode because very specific conditions need to exist for fuel to combust. It's not like the movies (did you know a cigarette will not ignite gasoline?).

As a BMW Tech here is Dallas, here is some advice. If you are replacing the fuel pump, just cut the fuel hose right after the clamp so you don't even have to DREMEL it for God's sake. There is plenty of slack. Just reattach the cut hose with a new compression clamp. Also, when removing the old pump and lifting it out, soak up as much excess fuel as possible with shop towels and throw them in a coffee can or a tin container that is open and set it outside to evaporate. You just dumped gas all over the damn place for no reason.

I'd advise most people to use pliers or side cutters. The fuel line is there to protect from outside elements (sparks, heat, debris, etc.) making not as unsafe as it looks, provided the fuel line isn't cut through or melted.

Dude who posted this video says it is ok to have sparks near the fuel tank when using a Dremel tool to cut a clamp off a fuel line at the fuel tank. He said, "There were sparks near the fuel [ tank ] in the same respect as there is fuel explosions when your engine is running." He continues to state that sparks near a fuel tank is safe. Scary.

How do I de pressurize if my car won’t even start?
@chesapeakemotorwerks
@chesapeakemotorwerks 3 ай бұрын
Assuming your car won't start because the fuel pump is dead, it's probably already depressurized. Otherwise there is normally a schraeder valve (like to add air to you tires) on the fuel rail at the engine, which you can use to depressurize the fuel system. Otherwise just be careful to catch the fuel when it comes out.

@chesapeakemotorwerks
@chesapeakemotorwerks Жыл бұрын
I did it preventatively, the old pump was still working fine. In my experience, it seems like they commonly fail between 150-180k miles. I actually put this pump in a 5 gal gas can to run engines on a test stand and it failed shortly after, so it was a good call.

@chesapeakemotorwerks
@chesapeakemotorwerks 6 жыл бұрын
Assuming everything is fine electrically, the float is probably hung up. You need to be *really* careful to make sure it is installed correctly and doesn't bind.
@ricardoealvarez6
@ricardoealvarez6 6 жыл бұрын
Chesapeake Motor Werkes That's what I'm thinking. For example, the gauge says 1/4 when it should say 3/4. I just want to make sure before I take everything apart again. I know there's a plastic base the pump sits on. So it might be touching/stuck on it?
@chesapeakemotorwerks
@chesapeakemotorwerks 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, your float is hung up. There's two sides of the tank each with a float, and the instrument cluster calculates how much fuel is left based on their readings. You can confirm this is the issue by unlocking your instrument cluster and running test 6, although with your symptoms it's pretty much a given. I think I had the same problem on my e39 when I replaced that fuel pump years ago & my friend had the same problem with his e46.

I've seen enough, go elsewhere for correct way to do this, this is for shits and giggles only.... Horrible even after the Sparks still not enough common sense to sponge out the excess fuel on the top of the old pump just loosening all the dirt. Fed the dirt right into that new fuel filter hhahahaha Didnt show how to prime with ignition cycling BEFORE reassembly and an actual start to ensure fuel level is also responding accurately.

too the guys talking about sparks and fire, you do know muffler installers use torches and welders all the time under cars right? but fyi to the chesapeake tech, you can cut that clamp with a good pair of side cutters and bleed excess fuel presssure at the filter under the car, much better and safer then inside the car.
