This is the hardest self-maintenance to perform on your Altima. I have done it THREE times on the same car, and I always underestimate the difficulty. Do not do this with kids around because you will swear, sweat, and probably want to punch something.

Thank you very much for sharing. I just replaced the one in my 2011 Altima. Took me about 10 minutes. It wad not hard just a little akward because of it's placement. Nissan Design flaw.

I was gonna say, this is crazy to access. Comparing it to a Honda Civic where you just push in the sides of the glovebox to let it down further and there’s the filter housing. About to change this filter on my sisters 2011 Altima. Glad to know it only takes about 10 min.

Are there any ways to tell when it’s time to replace the filter without taking everything apart?

You should replace your cabin air filter once a year or every 15,000 miles. A dirty cabin air filter filter could be filled with debris like leaves, pollen, and dust. If you live in an area with a lot of smog or around a lot of trees you might want to consider replacing it more often because you'll have more debris that may clog up the filter. Stale odors can also be caused by a dirty cabin air filters.

If you're agile enough, you can just crawl under there and replace it without taking out the glove box.

How did you open the filter housing?!?

There is a small clip on the bottom of the filter housing door that you pinch together. When you pinch the clip together and pull away from the filter housing the housing door will detach.

@@filterheads got it thx. Seems the last mechanic broke the clip and I needed to jam a flat screwdriver from below to pop it out. Can't believe they made the opening so small! The filter needs to be crushed to get it past the opening, then it expands

Yeah the engineers did a poor design with the cabin air filter door being small. Most new Nissans cabin air filter installs are like this.

After removing the filter housing door, I swear there is no space for a filter… is this all 2011 Nissan models?
