HOW TO Replace Ceiling Fan Speed Switch

In this video I show you how I replaced the ceiling fan speed switch on our 3-speed ceiling fan.

TIP: Another way to separate the green half of the switch from the black side of the switch is to hold up the housing by only the green side of the switch. Then pop the three side clips off. As you pop out each clip, the weight of the housing will help keep the clips from snapping back in. The housing will separate and fall after you pop the three clips. Do this over a soft surface to avoid damaging the housing.
Make sure to check your wiring when putting the switch back together. I accidentally mixed up the wiring for L and 1 and the fan would only respond to the fast speed but it would shut off the motor on slow and medium.

This was so helpful! The second setting on my fan stopped working and it just skips between off-1-3. I thought I was going to need a whole new fan but I’m so glad I found your video! Maybe the 2 wire is just loose, I’m going to check tonight. Thank you for being so thorough and detailed!

Hopefully its just a loose wire. If you have another of the same fan, compare the wiring to make sure the fan missing the second speed is wired correctly. If none of that works, it could be the capacitor.

Prying the old switch apart and wiggling out the wires is a great hint! Some other videos suggest cutting the wires, but they're not long enough to cut them more than once or maybe twice, plus if you cut them you'll have to re-strip each one.

I don't like the idea of cutting the wires either, it's not that hard to take the switch apart.

@Rhinoman116 0 seconds ago If your fan has a white quick disconnect, you shouldn't have to remove power, just undo the QD and remove the lower half. make a quick drawing of the switch and show which wires go where, or take a pic. so you know where to place the new wires when cutting wires for the new switch, strip off only about 1/4" otherwise the wire will be too flimsy to wiggle it in (haha) and gently wiggle them in one at a time, give a lite tug on each connection at the switch so you know it's gonna hold, then reassemble, test before installing the lower half.

Great video! Thanks. I’ve got a Hampton bay and a hunter fan. Similar process I presume. I like the wiring harness clips I hope those are in the hunter fan. Working at the table is better than wiring on the ceiling! Lol. Edit. The Hunter has the molex harness clips too! Yippee! Now I’m going to see about repairing the switch rather than replacing.👍. Bravo Chavez!

GREAT video and thanks for sharing! BUT, I cannot find the paper that had written down which colored wire with which number on the switch. All I know for sure is the black wire goes to "L." I hope i can figure out the other three numbers and wires without the information I needed on that paper.

If its a three speed switch like my switch it should be the same colors. You'll have to do some trial and error to find out. I mistakenly rewired one switch and it didn't work properly, haha. Not a big deal, I just fixed the wiring and it worked well again.

Thanks for your reply! The three wires for the switch are different colors than yours and the fan does also have three speeds.. For now, all I know for sure is the black wire is "L." What might help me is to closely look at the three remaining wires and how they are shaped when the old switch was still good. That may lead me to hooking up everything right with the new switch for the ceiling fan to work. Wish me luck!

@@DougCeleste I've fixed several of these. (The pull chains are really flimsy.) The holes on the switches are always labeled L-1-2-3, but the wire colors are almost always different. I take a cell phone picture of the old switch, showing the wire colors, before I pull the wires out.

@@scottparis6355 Thanks for the notes. I had a piece of paper to jot dot down what color wires go to what numbers but I lost the paper. All I know is that the black wire is "L" but not sure on the rest. I will have to figure out what to do and hope for the best. I should have done what you did. Wish me luck!

That's a good question. I don't know. I have never touched the light switch part of the unit.

You're right, that's the name of this ceiling fan. I didn't know. We moved into this remodeled home in 2012 and all the rooms had this exact same ceiling fan.

You definitely want to switch off the circuit breaker before opening the fan!

Yes, for extra safety. Especially if you think someone might come and turn on the fan by accident. Otherwise its not needed. Flipping the light switch to the off position cuts power to the unit and you're not touching any of the bare wires while it is connected.
