If you ever need to repair a lamp, this is the one to watch! This was my first time replacing a table lamp wiring and socket and by far, this was the BEST video I found on KZfaq. I researched at least 10 of these self-help videos, and none of them were as good as this one. The instructions here are very detailed with helpful tips offered along the way, and this was the ONLY video, at least what I could find, that offered a tip on how to insert the cord through the inside of a lamp that did not have a long threaded pipe inside the lamp, that part was driving me crazy and taking forever until I happened upon this video! Thank you Home Improvement Channel!!!

Very well explained. Thank you . Not rewiring a lamp - just wanted to shorten long chained wire for swag lamp and put on a new plug. The outlet was at the ceiling and not on the wain-scot. First time doing this so wanted to do it safely and you certainly explained how to manage that.

My mom was born in 1934 and those types of lamps were in her bedroom on the tall chest. The wood was maple with a family made quilt on the bed. The walls were a variety of pastel shades over the years of visiting there. Simple decor and elegant.

Thank you for the video I am making a conscious effort to be less wasteful and trying to learn how to repair things myself so that A) I can save money and B) I have less of a negative environmental impact. The solution for most people is just to go and purchase a whole other lamp and then it's really kind of sad that the perfectly good (not working) item that could be salvaged is just thrown away. ✌️Thanks!

Lovely video, straight to the point. Would have liked to have come across this video 4 years ago when I rewired my great grandmother's floor lamp she got as a wedding gift in 1948. The bulb started to flicker when switched to a certain setting and the bulb was good and screwed in tight, after visiting several hardware and home improvement stores finally found a replacement socket because it was the mogul base for a 100-200-300 watt 3 way bulb which was fairly common many years ago but nowadays is very difficult to find. Also replaced the cord because the insulation was cracking and falling apart as I unscrewed the wires from the old socket and the plug was the old style with two narrow prongs, allowing the plug to be inserted either way, as could be expected with a 70 year old lamp. At that time i was unaware of the smooth/ribbed side to ensure correct polarity, so I used a multimeter set to continuity to make sure the wide prong on the new cord was connected to the screw shell on the new lamp socket. My mother inherited the lamp after grandma passed early last year, and someday I hope to inherit it because it has sentimental value to me.

Awesome! So glad I was able to help you with your project. Yes the multimeter is a great way to tell if you're wired correctly. Great job on that! Totally understand the sentimental value of something like that. Hope you have a great New Years.... 😀

Hey Rudy, Thanks for your good video and many explanations. I have an older floor lamp which has the switch socket inside of a housing which doubles as the holder with 3 set screws for a globe shade. It also has a threaded rod going through a couple of nice brass pieces and is bolted to a flat iron piece of the upper part of the floor lamp ...and the cord does NOT go all the way through to the bottom of the threaded rod. Rather, it has a hole in the upper third of it, comes out from the switch above it, and goes through a hole in the lower brass piece, before the rest of the threaded rod attached to a flat bar on the upper part of the lamp. The threaded rod is then held in place with a nut from the bottom. In order to get this apart, I could not access the socked and "press" on the part to disassemble it from the lower part that screws on to the threaded rod. So I managed to hold the bottom of the threaded rod and unscrew the entire upper housing including the socket switch. This severed the cord/wire in the mean time. No problem, because it didn't work. The challenge is, How do I put it back together?!?! Any suggestions... If there is a way to get pics of the components to explain this better, let me know. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Ten points for pointing out that, yes, AC appliances do have polarity, and in the worse case, wiring them wrong is going to hurt someone. I know of someone who was electrocuted, standing on a wet basement floor and making contact with an incorrectly wired electrical device. It was the absolute worse case scenario, but you only get one chance to not die. She'll be missed.

I went over them a few times and will attempt to link all 4 TERMS YOU USED => to EACH other => for a complete progression => all in ONE PLACE...because I don't remember you ever doing it.....and going back and forth defeats the purpose of => KEEPING IT SIMPLE. So here goes.....please confirm CORRECTNESS.....or link them with your own comments below..... 1. SMALL PRONG => IS THE HOT SIDE => IT'S THE SMOOTH WIRE => CONNECT IT TO BRASS SCREW 2. LARGE PRONG => IS COLD/NEUTRAL/GROUND => SO THE GROOVED WIRE => HOOKS TO SILVER SCREW Was there any place in the video where you linked all 4 together, making it clear ? If so, I missed it. 7:35 why do other lamp-rewire instructions say to tie an underwriter's knot and you don't?
@TheHomeImprovementChannel
@TheHomeImprovementChannel 2 жыл бұрын
The knot only serves to keep the cord from pulling through. I don't think it really matters what kind of knot it is as long as it can't pull back. I tie the least intrusive knot I can so that the bulk of the knot doesn't get in the way of getting the brass cover back together. Of course you can use the underwriters knot if you need to, but for me, I didn't want to.
