Thank you very much, sir! Your awesome video has saved my family time and money. I’d rather spend money on my little ones rather than paying a shop an arm and a leg for something that i could do myself.

Very good video! Note that for the transfer fluid, be SURE to use the correct spec API GL- fluid. There is no such thing as a "GL4 OR GL5" fluid because they are very different and designed for different types of gears, not to mention that ONLY GL4 can be used when brass synchronizers are involved. I found this out the hard way when I used Mobil1 "GL4/GL5" fluid in the manual transmission of my Mazda Miata and it almost destroyed the transmission. The fluid additives attached to my brass synchronizers and peeled away the brass and attached metal, making shifting almost impossible. It required GL4.. The rear diff required GL5. These fluids are NOT interchangeable. I researched and found the Honda Pilot Transfer case takes HONDA GL5 HYPOID GEAR OIL 75W/85 or 80W/90 depending on the model year.

Thanks for the valuable information on the correct transfer fluid for this application. I have a policy of going to the Honda dealership for fluids. Honda is fussy with fluids!

I know. I've been buying my Honda vehicles (new and used) from my local dealership in my small town. The head technician has been a friend for over 30 years and has never led me astray. I do use other brand fluids which meet Honda specs in most applications. However, I have never found a replacement for the Dual Pump II diff fluid. @@TheOriginalMechanic

Good video. Honda is trigger-happy on their recommendations for time/mileage intervals for these two procedures. Also, 9:38 "No way" is incorrect. I use gravity. As a guide, I thread a flex-cable pickup tool, from the top, near the vicinity of the fill hole, then follow that with a tubing. Insert the bottom end of the tubing into the fill hole. Connect the top end of the tubing to a tall funnel with a small opening, to tightly seal the top of the tubing to the funnel.

Do you need to remove the tire, it looks like there's enough room to get the 3/8 breaker or ratchet in there for the diff?
@TheOriginalMechanic
@TheOriginalMechanic Жыл бұрын
I think the trouble would come in with the refill. The tire would block placement of the refill bottle and hose. But there may be a creative way to overcome that, as the viewer below found on the transfer case, calling out my "no way" statement about gravity feed.

Great video! What are the recommended mileage schedules for changing the differential and transfer case fluids?
@TheOriginalMechanic
@TheOriginalMechanic 2 жыл бұрын
I didn't look it up. With frequent towing and high temps I would do it at 30k. With average use much less often. I changed it here at 130k. I doubt it had been done before (second owner). Both looked OK. You might want to check your manual of consult a Honda dealer.

@@TheOriginalMechanic I looked in the manual, but I didn't see anything in there about the Differential Fluid/Oil maintenance cycle. I did find a service sheet online that recommended every 50-60k miles, but I'm also finding that it is nearly impossible to find the DPSFII fluid right now (for a 2018 Pilot). I did see it online for $20/quart!!! :-O Even then, someone commented that the seller sent them non-Honda OEM fluid when they ordered! 0_o Our Pilot only has about 51K miles on it, so given that we haven't driven anything other than road miles, no hauling, and Midwest temps, it may have to wait until Spring when supplies return again. Thank again!

Do you have to change a front diff fluid on the pilot or is that lubricated by the same ATF?
@TheOriginalMechanic
@TheOriginalMechanic 3 жыл бұрын
I don't know either lol
@BuffalonianResolution
@BuffalonianResolution 3 жыл бұрын
"Front differential" is just the automatic transmission/transaxle. So you just need to change the ATF fluid in regular intervals. But that is more specific with needing Honda DW-1 ATF fluid. Don't cheap out on this and get the Honda fluid. The Pilot transmissions can be its only weak point.

Dont buy a cheap torque wrench with the big scale attached to it. Buy a good one. The kind that has got an adjustable screw at bottom. The first one is not accurate enough to be accurate.
