Video for sharpening the old hedge trimmer blades: • Sharpening HEDGE TRIMM...
Full step by step guide on replacing the Hedge Trimmer cutter bar assembly on a stihl hs81 or stihl hs82. Plus greasing the gearbox.
This process is also the same principle for the stihl hs 86 / stihl hs 87 single sided hedge trimmers and will work the same way. Most other brands also have very similar setups so don't be afraid to get stuck in.
Also showing how I re-grease the gearbox (when doing what i call a thorough re-greasing) on these type of stihl hedge trimmers.
This process is based on a fully working, non broken or damaged (gearbox) hedgetrimmer. 😂
I probably forgot to mention something in this video so feel free to drop any questions in the comments.

Though I now use the Husqvarna 522HDR75X for everyday use, I still have my HS81R'S as backup, it is a phenomenal machine!

Hello. I'm not a pro, I would like to ask you if the older blades were already bad? it seems to me that the older blades still have enough meat, or am I wrong? I think it is important to clean the blades where they touch each other and to oil the blades. if necessary, the blades are also sharpened. diesel, for example, is greasy and also cleans solidly.

Yeh the old set still has plenty of life left in them and are now a backup set, however the spacers are slightly worn down and part of the friction plate had snapped off. I managed to pick the new set up for a bargain price so couldnt turn it down, and i always like having a spare set of blades. Diesel works wonders 👌

I need to replace my hedge trimmer, an old hs80, I was thinking about the hs82r, can anyone shed light on where it is manufactured? I know Stihl churn out millions of hedge trimmers from their Chinese factory, but I cannot find out if the hs82r is made there as well.

@@jeromefeneau6053 Thank you Jerome, I appreciate the comment. I have spoken to two contractors since who echo your comment, they advise that the new Stihl are inferior to the older more robust models like my old HS80. I was advised to consider the Husqvarna 522HSR hedge trimmer instead, more expensive but I have Husqvarna consaws and they are superb. Greetings from Ireland.

Very helpful video thanks. A quick question…. I have recently changed the whole blade assembly on my hs82t but now the gearbox grease is getting past the little orange plastic grease seal and I need to repack the grease after a days use. It’s coming out where the blades leave the gearbox. Have you come across this before or do you have any suggestions? The grease seal looks in good order but I might get a new one and see what happens.
@RJLgardens
@RJLgardens 9 ай бұрын
Its normal for a bit of grease to work its way out the end, that little orange thing is a debris shield to stop bits of debris getting in, it not a proper tight seal as such. Dont completely pack the gearbox out with grease either as that can cause issues.

Thank you for your reply. Maybe I have just been putting in to much grease? But after a few hours of running it starts to sound a bit rough so I figured that it was because the grease had escaped. I’ll try a bit less grease tomorrow and see how it goes 👍

@@ColinBell-uq4ui Grease should last quite awhile so somethings up if it constantly needs it. Is your grease too runny? I would wip the cover off and double check everything looks good in there. Check main cover gasket is still good as well. 👍

@RJLgardens
@RJLgardens 2 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, all depends on how much you use it and if you abuse them or not 😂. As long as your teeth still have plenty of meat left on them you should just be able to sharpen them when they get dull. A whole blade set assembly should easily last 3 yrs with proper maintenance and sharpening when needed. Unless you are a seriously heavy user, that is, or you just dont want the hassle of sharpening your own 👍

Any half decent multipurpose lithium grease should be fine, just don't go for really cheap stuff as it doesn't last very long.

Test? Just run it up like normal. The gearbox might be sluggish to start with because of the new grease. you can also lubricate the new blades if needed.
