Mod Mini. It took about three weeks but the car is finally off the jack stands and drives like dream. What initially was going to just be a servicing of the supercharger turned into the following: Oil Pan gasket, Water pump, thermostat and housing, shifting cable replacement, Fuel Filter swap, lower motor mount, new bypass valve, crank position sensor o-ring, and a couple of radiator hoses. CV axle is happening soon since it's totally shot, but thanks to your videos and replies to questions I've got the confidence to do the job. Thanks again for all of your help. It's been invaluable.

Just coolant, but oil from the filter and cylinder head galleries will spill everywhere when the housing is removed. But no need to drain engine oil.

I found that you can easily access the bottom bolt near the green connector from the bottom if you remove the power steering fan you can put a ratchet through there and take off the bolt. It may or may not help someone. Lol

This is an excellent video! Thank you for making the effort to show how to remove the oil filter housing. One tip I'd like to share that has helped me on different jobs when I have to thread bolts in difficult spaces while aligning components. I make "guide dowels". I start by using two or three bolts of the same pitch/diameter etc as the original bolts. I cut off the hex-head and use a hacksaw to make "screwdriver" slot on one end. I then screw this "guide dowel" into the block. With the hex-head removed, I can easily guide the component over the dowel and flush against the block, and if necessary also screwing a nut down over the guide dowel to keep the component from shifting. Then I can more easily screw in the other original bolts. Finally, I unscrew the guide dowel, and replace it with the last original bolt. I have used this trick on Lexus and Toyota axle-shafts with great success.

Just did this repair. Took just under 3 hours. It was exactly as you describe. Could not get the torque wrench on the third bolt, so tightened it as hard as I could with a short wrench. Of course, I had previously replaced both rear freeze plugs without removing the header, so I had some experience working in the back of the motor.

Nice strategy! I didn't try removing the oil filter housing until I had the subframe, axle, and starter out. I was replacing the clutch anyway but it's good to know this gasket can be replaced without removing anything else. I wasn't very careful when twisting off the heat exchanger (Cooper S manual) coolant hoses and crushed the coolant ports - they are very soft aluminum so at least it shouldn't be hard to make them round again with a dowel.
@ModMINI

I just did this and I suggest pulling the entire housing out on a MCS. As you'll want to inspect the oil cooler for clogging. And change its 2 O rings. Also, its good practice to clean and resurface the machined triangle gasket surface on the engine block. Dealing with this over engineered monstrosity isn't something you want to do again. So just go the extra steps and rebuild it all properly. IMHO.
@ModMINI
@ModMINI 9 жыл бұрын
Mike Spenard Thanks for the tips. Cleaning the block surface - yes, but how would you resurface it without pulling the block? I quick spray with some brake cleaner and maybe going over with a scraper should be more than sufficient for an oil sealing surface.
@mspenard603
@mspenard603 9 жыл бұрын
***** Some 800 grit and a small sanding block. Then flush the whole thing off with carb cleaner. Same with the flat surface on the cooler that mates with O-rings (don't trust the manufacturing process to leave it nick free). Also, you'll want to order those 2 hoses with the MCS. Mine were either RTVd on or melted to the metal tubes because it ran hot (clogged cooler); not entirely sure; so be prepared to cut them off.
@mspenard603
@mspenard603 9 жыл бұрын
***** Also, the whole thing fits thru the pass side wheel well. If you pre-assemble it with the gasket I suggest wrapping that surface in a mech wipe (tape it on) before you pass it thru that arch again. Otherwise it'll get nicked or dirty.

Hey @Mod MINI, Great video and I have done this repair before thanks to you. A different question, as I think over time my filter housing has become stripped from oil changes and I need to replace the entire housing. Do you think you could pull the whole housing out from the top after undoing the bolts, of would you need to drop the whole subframe and do it that way from the bottom? It is an '03 Cooper S, so I will have the oil cooler on there. Thanks!

@@BoulderMountainGuiding Haven't tried yet, but I took a look this past weekend, and I don't think there is enough clearance. I’d like to see an explanation of how the unit works. It has coolant running around it and three in/out puts for oil. Mine, as I was re installing it, had an o ring that didn’t look to seal on anything. Now I’m worried about it.
@Audio_Simon
@Audio_Simon 8 жыл бұрын
Allow me to add that if you think there is an oil leak from the filter housing (like I did), it might alternatively be from the filter housing to oil cooler seals. There are two square section o-rings here that are prone to leaking.
@warwickdean
@warwickdean 7 жыл бұрын
I think only water should leak from there and not oil
@ModMINI
@ModMINI 7 жыл бұрын
The square section o-rings would leak oil if they leak, not coolant. Coolant is self-contained within the little heat exchanger. It flows in and flows back out after passing over the fins, just like a radiator. I have never seen those ones leak, it's always been the one I change in the video. Not a bad idea to replace those ones as well. If coolant is leaking, it would be because you have a pinhole leak in the aluminum or a bad hose.

So if you had to change the control arm bushings, CV boots, and oil filter housing gasket would you do them all at the same time? My thought is after the arms are out access to the axles is easier and then the axles out the housing is easier to reach. Your thoughts??

Probably will need to remove an axle or the exhaust manifold to get it out of there.

Would a 2002 base MINI, non-turbo with manual transmission have the cooling hoses attached to the housing? I've got a major oil leak that I think is more a cracked housing than just the gasket. I'll be replacing the entire housing and filter cap with new.

I don't know if you still visit your page, but I have a question. How do you read the dipstick on your MINI? I find it very difficult to do so. It's like I see oil on it after I wipe it and dip it again, but nothing that seems to tell me that I need to put more oil it.

Victor Oliveira The latch probably needs a good oiling. What it from the outside with the palm of your hand while trying to open it and it should move enough to get the door open. I had the same question about a month ago and this worked.

I have an R53 04 base mini with a manual transmission. I broke the drain plug inside the housing and have to replace the entire housing. I need any advice you can give me. I'm not shy or new to working on my own vehicles, but I am new to my mini. The shop said it would be a two hour fix so I'm not too scared, but it's 10° F outside and I have work in the next few days so I have to get it done. Please please respond. I am now subscribed.

All the advice is in the video. To get more room, remove the exhaust manifold or passenger axle. Exhaust manifold is probably less risky/requires less tools.

So soon to contact you again Mod-Mini from my last comment, I have UK spec R53, I have a new unit to replace my broken one do you know if you can pass this whole unit through from the right side (drivers side UK) - (USA passenger side) with plastic wheel arch removed? as I have also the added cooler attached, any advice welcome, thank you in advance

***** Today (28th April 2015) I took the plunge and changed the whole oil filter housing with cooler-what a job! took inner plastic wheel arch off, and gained enough access through the gap over the drive shaft, squeezing it passed the disconnected coolant hoses. Disconnected the stabiliser arm to allow just a little more access in the end. Tough cookie getting the bolts as going in blind on the bolt hidden near the oil pressure switch as the heat shield (RHD) was a pitta to move around and hold a socket wrench. Your video and advice was the right motivation and I did it.....would I do that job again, may be just the gasket next time. Wish you well and big gratitude to your videos..

Hi, excellent series of videos and if I hadn't see you do the housing here i probably wouldn't have tried it. For anyone else working out how to remove the housing from a manual cooper S - with the oil cooler on the housing - there is even less room to work with but it is do-able. If you remove the coil pack and then the exhaust manifold bolts from the back of the engine and lift the manifold up slightly (there is flex in the exhaust flexi) you can actually see the bottom two bolts and get to all three bolts holding the housing from the top with a socket - without needing to work completely blind from the bottom. It also makes a bit more room to get your hands in there to reattach things. The manifold is only 8 bolts and they aren't too difficult to get to. When the manifold is disconnected take the the top heat shield completely out through the top of the engine bay. I removed the header tank just because it looked like it would be in the way - but I don't think it made any difference (and it's only one bolt and two clips on the standard header - and i could clean that out at the same time) Remove the oil filter and cap cover to make a bit more room. You can then pull the manifold up and across slightly, and can then see the two bolts and get a hand / socket down onto them. You can feel / get a deep socket onto the bolt through the middle of the housing & then the housing is off. I used a 1/4 inch ratchet with a 13mm deep socket as it was small enough to turn past the various bits of housing in the way. Also absolutely buy a set of hose clip pliers if you haven't already got some. The hoses are an absolute pain to get to. the clips had been put on in the most awkward angles. I fiddled about with needle pliers and plumbers wrenches for ages but a standard hose plier made it a relative doddle to get off. There is (just) enough room to get the housing with the cooler still attached out through the wheel arch - with the wheel and cover off - without removing anything else. Given that it does come out in one go it must be possible to get it back in as a single lump but because i had new bits and seals to assemble I did this in situ behind the engine. I got the housing back in through the side, then started putting the cooler housing back on while I could still get to / move the housing around. Whoever had worked on my old housing had stripped the threads on the cooler bolts - so I was very careful to get them lined up / taking nicely. You can see / line up the housing from the top and get the bolts started. Use the hose pliers to get the hose clips back on. It is also easy to get to the timing tensioner from the top when the oil cooler is out of the way completely - and peace of mind knowing that's also done doesn't hurt. Charles.

I believe these bits is to be the pressure valve!! all bits found were in the filter housing - As I say car not driven and will get a fuller view once parts received....the oh dear scenario hit home if you get my drift.......update on my repair once all parts received. have you ever come across this???? regards Keith

Hi, I just replace the gasket last night, and I would like to provide more information about it. The oil housing can be remove from the car easily, and it is also a good time for oil pressure switch replacement as well. Besides that, for the right hand side drive vehicle like mine, it is impossible to use the extension wrench from the drive, but two bolts can be easily reached by removing the steering oil cooling fan. One more thing is the shape of the gasket, since there are two type gasket in the market and I bought both for replacement. For the new oil canister where there in no spring and cage in the canister, the shape of the gasket is the same with the one shown in your video. And I guest another shape gasket is for the oil canister with spring and cage.

Hi ModMINI! I have a problem with my 2004 MCS, and I just wanted to get your thoughts. I just did my regular oil change and as I finished the oil light came on. I check the oil level and it was perfect and there was no leaks. The light is on while idle but turns off when passes 3000 rpms. Have you encountered any problems like this before? I wouldn't want to do unnecessary damage by driving it like this. I would really appreciate your opinion!! Thank you!

You may have damaged the bypass/drain valve inside the oil filter housing. If you can't repair it, you need to replace the entire housing. Get this fixed as you are running the car with lower than required oil pressure for safe engine operation.
