Thank you! You just saved me from making a huge mess!

Just worked with that *exact* old-school Delta valve today. For more than a year there was a very slow drip coming from our tub spout, which most likely meant that stuff needed to be replaced inside the faucet valve (e.g. seats and spring). So, ordered an OEM kit to upgrade from that crystal knob to a handle which also included the replacement metal ball, seats,springs...etc. I then watched *lots* of videos. In about every video concerning this specific valve, there was a warning about the removal of that retaining nut, and what can happen when you're not careful. The water in my neck of the woods is hard, being that our house is 24yo.There was a bit of corrosion present- and this is the original shower trim that came with the house. I used a pipe wrench to grasp the ring, and lightly tapped on the wrench with a hammer - but sure enough, that ring didn't budge one bit. So following another suggestion that I saw on a video - I poured boiling water from my tea kettle over the ring. Apparently this resulted in some expansion; as a few squirts of WD 40 appeared to seep successfully underneath the ring to hopefully lubricate the threads. Then after waiting a couple of minutes, grasped ring again with pipe wrench, and lightly taped on wrench just a few times, and voila - the ring loosened and was then removed easily. Lastly replaced the seats springs and installed the rest of the upgrade kit which went relatively smoothly. Also looks as though that slow drip from the tub spout is gone also. :) BTW, that replacement kit is from Delta- part #RP54870 "Knob Handle to Lever Handle Conversion Kit to 600 series Tub/Shower"

Thanks so much, ur tip for torching the old nut on my old Delta shower controls worked like a charm, I’m pretty broke do to covid and really didn’t have money to replace the whole valve assembly so I did as u said and the torch let me loosen the nut and replace just the guts ! Thank a million man... P.S. my wife thank you too, she was worried we were gunna have to cut a hole in the wall or remove tile to replace, but we didn’t ! Thanks again

I have an old valve like this in my basement. I’ve rebuilt many valves in the past. It started leaking and I was going to just replace it due to age. Now I think I’ll give it a try.

every plumber does it once,,,lol. i have learn to split the bonet with a hack saw blade and they come apart easy . we have plumbers come in to our shop daily holding a twisted valve bodys. glad you posted this video to help people avoid the expensive replacing. billyjoe

Most, at least me, anyway, have difficulty getting the springs and caps back in this type of valve, was hoping to get tips to do that one part of the repair.

Tim, your video was the closest I could find to helping with my faucet issue. Any suggestions for how to get the old seats and springs out? Mine are stuck so I can't replace them but I feel like I got REALLY close (for a rookie) to fixing the drip. I tried needle-nose pliers, an alan wrench and even a few smaller tools but the seats look to be the issue. Thanks!

Do you know what trim kits you can buy to update the look of the Delta shower valve that you talk about in this video. I don't have a problem getting the retention ring off but would like to replace the handle. Any suggestions?

I removed an old delta kitchen faucet and in spite of my best effort with some wd40 and a big wrench on that little allen head it won't move. Likewise the retention ring stuck. I have decided delta sucks sorry delta but you kinda do. It's time for a new Moen basic 64 dollar HD one with the built in supply lines even got a cute little sprayer. Supposed to be simple simon to install. Need adapters for 1/2 to 3/8cc male but not a big deal and the built in supply lines seem to be a good thing maybe. Anyway will try your torch approach if PB Blaster don't work.

For crying out loud, why can't they put shut-off valves on these shower valves? I know they exist.
