TIP: If you're like me, the shoes kept shifting out of place while trying to reattach the springs, so I held them in place by using a screwdriver to stuff a clean rag snuggly between the shoes and along the inner rim. It worked great.

Those wondering what sort of bolts to use, M8x1.25 bolts of any length. Really should have been in the video.

Old, I know but wanted to thank you for showing the, in my way old drum brake experiences, stepped notches for the adjuster part and how they face. I used another video to do my Gen II 2005 Prius rear drum (not disc) brakes and it didn't show that. It never occurred to me that there might be a notch and that it would be important to face it the right way. Fortunately, I'm experienced enough to leave the other side intact so I can check odd things like this and got it right. RichE

Great video. I reviewed many videos b4 using this one. It worked very well. The only initial problem was installing the main spring. Looking closer l observed my mistake. I needed to ensure the shoes were fitted tight into the jaws of the brake cylinder. When l did this l had no problem installing the spring.

4:35 no, when installing new brake shoes, especially when replacing very worn ones, the former setting of the adjuster will not match with a new set of shoes, it will have to be (fully) turned in otherwise the drum will not fit.

Hey your video was very helpful when I replaced the brakes on my 2014. Only problem is I hoped my handbrake would grab better after replacement but it’s still not biting like when it was new. If I’m on a hill facing downward and put the car in drive it lurches forward. Can you offer some advice on what I can adjust to bring it back to new when it would be locked up right in about 5-6 clicks.

Did you buy the brake shoes with the arm (that hold the brake cable) already riveted to the brake shoe? I can't replace the brake shoe on my 2010 toyota yaris because I don't know how to separate the arm (that hold the cable) from brake shoe because it is RIVETED. If it is riveted how do you remove the rivet awy from the shoe? Can I buy a brake shoes with the arm already attached?

Did you touch brake line or cylinder? If you did - you have to make sure you bleed brake fluid to ensure there is no air in brake line. Make sure everything is installed properly. If you still have problem and cannot figure out - don't drive and take to to mechanic.
@googleplusisdead
@googleplusisdead 6 жыл бұрын
I'd guess you used too much and it got on the brake drum, shoe friction material or both. This will give you NO brakes. But they won't squeal... :) You only need a VERY thin film where the brakes rest on the backing plate. You'll have to redo your brakes, with NEW shoes as ones that are contaminated with oil or grease cannot be cleaned up properly. Be sure to use brake cleaner spray or whatever to ensure NO grease is left on the drum, as well as the backing plate. Then put that VERY thin brake grease on the pads. Less is better. Good luck. It is strange that Toyota puts such a humonguous brake drum on its Yaris; but Honda can get by with a tiny little drum on their Fit/Jazz.
