In this video, I'll replace my new hot water tank, installing it on my 2011 Fleetwood Bounder. My old tank blew last winter, so I had to purchase a new one, and installed it on my own.

thanks for making this video. I hooked my 1995 fleetwood up to water today and water poured out of the heater compartment. after watching this I feel less daunted by the idea of fixing it!

Just so people know. This video is about replacing the entire water heater, not just the tank. If you only want to replace a leaking tank, it is of no use.

Excellent, saved me immensely as I couldn't figure which way the tank came out, with just slight variation on the hook ups.

I am so glad I watched this video.. It is the ONLY video on KZfaq where someone knows not only how to do step by step but can actually talk to us like normal people. You were very clear and detailed and I can't wait tio tear into my water tank this weekend because of your easy to follow comments. Thanks so much. RV caster. Keith

Well the sad result was that even after watching your video and getting so pumped up about fixing my identical problem, I had a letdown. I got under the water heater on my back and Bam! There was a solid bottom under it. No screws or trap door. I took all the screws out and broke the sela and pulled it 4 inches out but it caught. I assume there are PEX tubing inside preventing it form coming out more. Not sure how to get to it since there is virtually no room inside the RV to work. I thought about cutting it from the outside and then repairing it with a 1/2 inch Gator bite coupler. Any suggerstions?

Laziestcrow hey, yes the starter is electric and the main line is gas, so I had 3 wires for the electric part and the main gas line coming from the tank, which was a tight line and not very easy to pull out but with a little bit of work you'll be able to get it out. Please mark all your connections and wires so you know how to reassemble the new one. Good luck

That sealant, if anyone is looking for the proper name, is called Butyl Caulking.. It's what they used to put windshields in with, and it's great for making water tight seals in situations like this.. It won't break down the same way that silicone will, particularly around a heat source like your tank. :)

Bravo! I may or may not, have to replace HW tank, just trying to fix what I believe is a leaking line connector. The access panel underneath may be a challenge, because there's an improvised steel shroud covering it. But knowing where to look made a difference. Thanks!

Good video. I am replacing mine with an AC/gas unit that is the same size. I want to preserve the old one intact as my neighbor wants it. I was an electrician so hooking up the power wiring is no issue, but i was nervous about all the rest until I saw this video. All my plumbing is behind a cupboards as is the tank so hopefully someone pushing as I pull, will preserve the insulation on the old tank.

One other tip salvage the circuit board and eco kit off the old one if the board is the same. I have had both go on Atwood heaters in the past. The ECO kit is actually only about $30 so no big deal but that circuit board is pricey

This was a great video. I was wondering how to do the water heater as I have a Check valve issue. I was surprised to see the Access door underneath the RV. Perhaps that is the way to get to that check valve! Thanks for a very informative Item !

that trash you pointed out at the end was the same thing I wound up with from the old tank. The Airstream tanks really require a tug if they are factory installed. You have to bend the flanges 90˚ then cut the caulk and plumbers putty out with a long sharp knife.

That white sealant is butyl. If you are messing with that stuff in the summer, a fair warning is that it is messy. Paint thinner makes it easy to clean.

For the electrical, how do you know if there is AC current as well as DC? I currently have an Atwood GG Model (gas only) and I want to upgrade to combined. If I pull the unit only to find no AC, I have a much bigger project. I have a Fleetwood Storm, 2015. Any help much appreciated.

The seal between your tank and RV is not caulk. It is butyl tape which a putty like tape used on all RV seals like the windows and doors. It's readily available online and RV parts stores.

THANK YOU I HAVE A 2004 BOUNDER WITH THE SAME UNIT AND I NEED TO REPLACE MY ELEMENT YOU HAVE THE ONLY VIDEO THAT EXPLAINS IN DETAIL. I CALLED FLEETWOOD AND THE GIRL SAID THE ACCESS WAS FROM INSIDE THE COACH. I HAVE A WASHER DRYER COMBO AND MEASURED FROM DOOR TO CENTER OF WATER HEATER. THEN MEASURED INSIDE AND LOOKED AT THE HEIGHT DIFFERENCE AND SAID NO WAY AM I PULLING THE W/D OUT TO REPLACE THE ELEMENT ILL JUST USE THE GAS PART OF IT. SO THANK YOU SO MUCH AS I WOULD HAVE EVENTUALLY PULLED THE WASHER OUT AND WOULD HAVE BEEN HOT TO FIND NO ACCESS TO WATER HEATER. I'VE CALL FLEETWOOD SEVERAL TIMES FOR DIFFERENT ISSUES AND THEY'VE EITHER BEEN WRONG OR COULDN'T TELL ME. I HOPE I DON'T HAVE TO SLIDE THE WATER HEATER OUT TO GET THE ELEMENT IN AS THERE'S NOT MUCH CLEARANCE AND I MAY HAVE TO. YOU'RE A LIFE SAVER AND THE ONLY VIDEO THAT SHOWS THAT ACCESS PANEL.

It should be sealed with butyl tape first and then go around the edges with a product like ProFlex R/V or Geocel Water Shed.

@@stefaniesevera1123 Hi Stefanie, I ended up paying the local RV shop $20 to knock it off and put the new one on. They had already rigged a larger diameter pipe that let them tap on the back plate and push it off the exhaust port. Good luck to you!

I would love to remove our energy HOG "hot water heater", which gets its name by RE heating hot water several timer per hour! I would install an TANKLESS, on demand water heater! We have one in our home and our utility bill dropped in HALF! How water heaters SUCK down your gas and electric, EVEN when NOT in use!

Just a heads up, it's a water heater, not a HOT water heater. Hot water is already hot, it doesn't need to be heated. 🤔🤔

I purchased a replacement tank installation kit for $182 including shipping. Just a quick check, the whole unit from Amazon is $385, so I saved about $200. If it had been only $20 savings, I would have replaced the whole unit, but I like saving $200. Edit to original post: After posting I found my receipt for the tank. The kit plus shipping was $165.21. So a little more than $200 savings.
