In order to remove the side mirror of the rear view, you need to unscrew a few screws, then remove the protective cover by removing the latch from inside. Ah got it, used some mass air flow sensor cleaner, and it moved no problem!

Hi: What if the mirror isn't attached to the car? How can you pry the housing shell away from the base to get access to the retainer lock?

My mirror came off in the carwash. So I assumed the glued pad failed? But this does not show the glue pad behind the mirror that sticks to the motor? Mine is a 2000 E320, is it different?

Mine had the remnants of a foam square pad behind the mirror, and I assumed it was a double sided tape. So I took the outside cover off to inspect, and the top spring does not seem to lock the mirror on as it should? And all I see for attachment otherwise is the two spring clips, one on the side and one on the bottom, but they don't hold anything, they just guide the mirror when it's adjusted. Not sure how to put this thing back together.
