What a champ. This guy did a frustrating job out in the snow and recorded the whole thing! I might try loosening the radiator or removing the intake manifold to make it easier.

2:18 after removing dipstick tube bolt I inserted bent end of the battery hold-down j-bolt to the dipstick tube hole and passed threaded end trough the teardrop shaped hole in the small nail puller. Next I installed 10 mm nut on the threaded end and pried against the intake manifold. This worked quite well (California car with 95k miles if it makes a difference) I've managed to replace it without taking the oil filter, but have to disconnect starter to battery wire from all brackets along the way 6:00 I used fine tooth ratchet (it survived without damage) with cheater on 17 mm bolt and cut off 14 mm box end inserted into 135 degree EMC elbow on the upper 14 mm bolt to break it loose. I've also removed air cleaner housing ; to detach starter to battery wire from its bracket under intake, I've used the same battery j-bolt under the wire bundle , and pried up while pulling on the plastic tab with long flat screwdriver

Can you access it from the top by removing the intake manifold?

Thank you for this video. It was very helpful in explaining the process to replace the starter. I wanted to add a comment that I was able to remove the starter without having to remove the oil filter. It may have been easier to do that, but since I had recently changed the oil, I wanted to try and do it without removing the filter and it worked. I did remove the oil pressure sensor because my starter was very difficult to remove once all the bolts were out. I really had to hammer it out, so I removed the sensor so it wouldn't get damaged. I did replace the sensor prior to installing the new starter motor which was much easier to do. Also, I was able to get at the 14mm bolt on the top side of the starter motor using a swivel head 14mm socket attached to a 3" extension attached to another swivel (U joint) connector to a 10" extension to my socket wrench. Sounds a bit complicated, but it worked and I was able to better see how to line up the socket to the bolt rather than having to do it blind from beneath. Thank you!

This video helped me get both starter bolts out te oil filter and sending unit off in less than 45 minutes but ive been prying on this starter physically for about 3 hours and still it wont come off. I got it to move about 5 or 6 mm away from bell housing but its a bear.

The easiest way to do that starter is remove the intake it splits in the middle and the gaskets are reusable and you can get right at the starter or the alternator no problem. Starter comes out the bottom. You can access the wiring and upper starter bolt and see what you are doing with intake manifold removed.

THANK YOU! This helped tremendously! My old starter put up *quite* a fight! I removed the intake manifold about halfway through my attempt. I still had a heck of a time getting the old starter out, but in hindsight, I don't think there is any way I could have succeeded without removing the intake! I have the official Honda service manual. I assumed it would be the authoritative resource. Well, it certainly helps a lot with most repairs, but it leaves out a ton of information, particularly on this job! Thanks again, White Knight!

My mechanic just called me to say how "sucky" this job is as he's replacing a starter on my 07 Honda Fit. Appreciate your video and both you and my mechanic. I could never do this!

@@goddom I have been debating doing it myself but yeah, after this video, perhaps I'll just order the starter and have a mechanic change it out. ;) Appreciate the upload!

I’m getting ready to replace my starter and watched your video (very helpful btw 👍) and a couple others. My question is why go this route? Wouldn’t it be much easier to remove the intake manifold and have full access and can be done quicker?
@goddom

In hindsight maybe yes. Don't forget to plug in all the sensor wires when done. If you have issues with rev limiter or something you probably forgot to plug in a sensor.

It’s people like you that discourage people to do this job themselves. This job is not that hard dude it’s a starter if you cant do a simple starter job like this you shouldn’t be trying to work on your own vehicle. Compared to all the vehicles I’ve ever changed a starter on I would say on a scale from 1- holyshit I would say this is a 1 maybeee 2.

I have replaced a number of starters in my time. If you think this is one of the easiest, then good for you. But I have changed much easier starters than this one.

You clearly have no idea what you are talking about. The starter itself is not the problem, it is the access. I have replaced starters across various models that have taken me anywhere from 1 hour up to 4.5 hours. Vans like the Renault Master bury the starter below the EGR cooler and access is incredibly difficult.
