Very helpful! Thank you for sharing this video. (1984 454ci ..... Didn't know any better the first time changing the gaskets and over tightened the bolts. Now I know better this time. Thank you)

I replaced my valve cover gaskets on a '67 Oldsmobile 425 that were leaking, and three hours after I finished, they were leaking even more! I used the red RTV, not black, and I don't think I used enough of it. Looks like the key is to smear a thin coat evenly across all surfaces. I'll give it another shot when the weather warms up a bit, thanks for this video!

Cork gasket. No silicone.
@josephfox11926 жыл бұрын
You might know but my dad showed my a good trick, since you have replacements covers to put on you can take your old covers and cut out just the top all the way around so if you ever need to adjust valves while it's running you can put them on real quick and be able to adjust while it runs without oil flying every where, Thanks Joey From Statesville NC

Bought me an older truck for my first car that specific reason. My parents told me that it’s way beyond my skill and knowledge and Yet I’ve solved nearly every issue on the vehicle.

Hi. I own a 70 impala and I never use a sealant on cork gasket. But, your video is great.😎😇👍🏽
@iszy13113 жыл бұрын
So sealant is not mandatory?
@dirtmcgirt04202 жыл бұрын
@@iszy1311 all it does is hold the gasket to the cover, correct you don't need it

Thumbs up 2023, i installed mine with rubber gaskets & tiny bit of ancient rtv, failed. Installed same rubber gaskets with too much bew rtv, failed. Going to buy new cork gaskets and place small amount of rtv between cover and gasket then install to succeed - not overtighten or over rtv!! Sheesh. 3rd times the dinner winner

Great video watching over and over. I have rubber still core gaskets. How much black sealant to add around. I have some tiny spots 0.5 mm gap between gasket and bolt hole not completely flat which are covered if push gasket to that spot a little.

Do you prefer cork over silicon gaskets and if so, why? I'm about to put new valve covers on my '65 C10 with a 327. Thanks for the instructional.
@ClusterHeadSurvivor3 жыл бұрын
Personal preference. Rubber ones can be re used if installed correctly Cork works fine with silicone

I don’t know if you know an answer to this. But I have a question I have valve covers that look kind of like those on my 1976 350 V8 and it’s very tricky to fill the oil since the brake booster and all the other stuff is in the way since the oil fill on the driver side valve cover is in the back is it possible to flip the valve cover 180° or is it only designed to fit one way?
@ClusterHeadSurvivor4 жыл бұрын
Ben Boudreau sure you can flip it. Sounds like it was last put on backwards

Any help here. I'm purchased a truck with valve cover off heads looks dirt how can I clean the heads with out taking it off. Any advice?
@d-wheels22042 жыл бұрын
Vacuum the dirt out. Then use carb cleaner or something to clean it all up.

I have 1983 s10, V6 2.8L and how can I replace the inside of Valve Cover or cleaning it? because I sandblast it!I'm afraid it had some sand in it and I don't want to put it back to screw up my engine! what can I do??? thank you
@ClusterHeadSurvivor4 жыл бұрын
Neutral God you sandblasted the valve cover? Ensure you blow it out using compressed air ensuring it’s clean and free of any oils or debris. Follow same instruction to Install here.

I ordered chrome valve covers from lmc truck for my 93 silverado 5.7 liter I had to spin both covers around to make them fit and switch ends for the pcv valve and the oil fill cap is this normal
@ClusterHeadSurvivor3 жыл бұрын
It doesn’t matter which side is what. As long as your pcv and oil fill cap is there you are good
@stephenmcfarland30783 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info it runs good and all it just had me worried about spinning the covers around to make them fit

Good video. I have a 305 in a 85 K10 with 74,000 original miles. I need to change my value cover gaskets. Do you have any tips on how to get more power out of the 305 with out total rebuild. It runs great but lacks in power. Thank you
@ClusterHeadSurvivor4 жыл бұрын
Start with dual exhaust, headers, then cam, intake,carb, recurve dist. That will wake it up. Or 350 Swap....cheaper and easier
@cactusnalpine3 жыл бұрын
I had a 305 in my 80 c10 it dyno’d at 109 rwhp and 141 lb ft of torque at 4100 rpm. Did a crate 350 swap best upgrade so far it’s a night and day difference.

Hello, I have STP high heat grease. Could I use that instead of the black silicone or silicone paste?
@ClusterHeadSurvivor4 жыл бұрын
NO !!!
@DeathByLego4 жыл бұрын
ClusterHeadSurvivor silicone paste it is.
@DeathByLego4 жыл бұрын
Okay so apparently 3M silicone paste is more of a lube as a sealant. So I’ll probably just get the black silicone. Thanks!!

4:54 how do you take off that pipe?
@ClusterHeadSurvivor3 жыл бұрын
pull it out of the gromet on the valve cover. it just pulls out.
@joshstrout98672 жыл бұрын
So why use the black gasket maker? I was told just the other day when I bought my valve cover gasket with cork gaskets not to use any sealant’s. I noticed the video is 4 years old.
