Want to restore that feeling you had when you bought your Mercedes Benz from the dealership? In this video I'll show you how to replace your control arm and ball joint. You can also call this the radius rod. The reason it's good to replace your control arm and ball joint is because it has a rubber bushing inside of it that can wear out over time causing your car's suspension to feel sloppy. With a few simple tools you'll be able to swap out your control arms and ball joints like a pro and your car will feel brand new again!

Those are crown nuts...so they are designed as locking nuts that should not vibrate loose. However, if you do want the extra security of a locking mechanism....why not just use a Cotter pin?

Great video! This is by far the most accurate vid that I have come across for this repair for the S500. It's clear and precise. When you do a search for this repair using the key words it actually does not come up. You should add "control arm" or "lower control arm" or "control arm ball joint" to the video title or description. I think that would increase your chance of getting hits. I have two questions, 1)Do they sale the ball joint and control arms together ? And 2)Do you suppose to change the ball joint when you change the control arms

Hello Romelia Rivers! Yes, you can buy a control arm with the ball joint together. I would recommend changing both the control arm and the ball joint at the same time. I hope this helps. Cheers!

How well are your parts holding up? I have a 2004 S430 and I'm planning on either replacing all my suspension components or just replace all bushings and ball joints. Also looking for drilled rotors and ceramic brake pads. Any recommendations for what brand to get? Looking for durable quality but reasonable cost. Thanks!

I have never seen anyone use a hammer for the ball joint separater tool, just keep tightning until it pops open. Which way is right?

Hello Anon! The hammer method has been used for many years. Sometimes ball joint separators can struggle to separate a ball joint. So, tapping the control arm with a hammer will send a shock wave through the metal into the ball joint to cause the metal to vibrate in just the right way to break free the ball joint. Either method works fine. I hope this helped.

Can you jack the suspension up to simulate a load? I do not have a platform to work under , but plenty of jack stands and Jack...

If you can borrow a set of drive up ramps, those should do the trick.

Yes you can. Jack it up on lower control arm to simulate ride height and tighten

Great video bud but really didn't see the point drilling the hole in the bolt and wiring it up if it really needed it Mercedes would have made it with a hole in the first place the threadlock solution is all you need. A bit OCD imo

Great video, but disappointing to see the use of an adjustable spanner! No good tradesman uses these things and won't even have one in their toolkit. Get a spanner that fits!

Hello Tim Rogers, Thank you for the kind words. I agree with you 100%. I usually never use an adjustable spanner, but I think I didn't have the correct size at the time, and I was in the middle of filming the video, so I used an adjustable spanner.

Amazon shows two diferent part numbers and two different prices for left and right. But they are the same part according to Mercedes?

When I did my balljoints I also used the tool and hammer, but I had to get it tight. I was replacing the balljoints, so good to go. Anyway, by the time I rapped the hammer on it the balljoint exploded off the knuckle. And then my car was totalled down the street during a test drive after completing the suspension work (shocks, balljoints, a little lower with a thinner shock pad stuff.) i.imgur.com/34hzsR9.jpg Going for a 2001 E55 AMG since it's a real simple car. You should also do the brake conversion: It cost me $550 for 2002 C32 AMG remanufactured calipers and rotors. They fit on a W210 upside down, but still, bolt right up. I just had to go down the street to a tractor/construction equipment hydraulic shop for the custom brake lines. Go from 300mm rotor to 345mm rotors. I noticed you have the same Brembo calipers, BTW. They just fit a smaller rotor, so you might be already running 330mm rotors. You can swap the back caliper cover to skip getting custom brake lines.
