I water mine right away. I've never had issues. You can't kill a tree by watering, including succulents. There is a threshold and that threshold is high.

You could probably get away with using cactus soil, or even potting soil and just water less often, however bonsai soil is specifically designed for it to be difficult for roots to grow in, so the form splits and it helps the tree stay miniature. It’s still possible in other souls however much more difficult to achieve. I’m not sure how two Portulacarias (one in bonsai soil and one in regular coup would do in terms of measurable miniaturization so I can’t say anything with a guarantee, but I would expect some noticeably larger leaves and possibly longer internodes.

@@TheBonsaiJungle thank you for commenting! I dont want larger leaves but would prefer a larger trunk, I visited the link you mentioned on the soil and notice that there is an organic version of the soil y0u recommended, is there a difference for quality?

I make my own. Since I don't care much about this bonsai I just reused my general purposed 1:1:1 akadama, pumice, pine bark. The links in the description have very similar soil. I'm in USDA zone 5a
