Alrighty, so here is a video of how I report my senecios or string of bananas, pearls, tears, etc. I tried to keep the info strictly to potting, and not go off on tangents about the plant, it’s habitat, etc. like I usually do. Let me know if you prefer this kind of more straight forward how to video, or if you enjoy more facts being talked about. I’m trying new things, all of them won’t be a hit, but I’m experimenting with some more basic videos where I don’t go off about all types of info about the plant, and just focus on one task, like repotting. So let me know if you guys feel this is a helpful format to continue. Not exclusively. Of course I’ll still make chatty videos about more in depth topics, but maybe with some videos like this thrown in too!

Pinning is a great idea. I'm absolutely doing this. I've been doing something similar but far less effective. It involves pressing the roots into the soil with a chopstick. It's bananas! Your tip is brilliant. Thank you!

I do pin the plants with office paper clips or with hair pins, it is very convenient (and it brings some iron to the plant). However I always struggle with the string of pearls, and also with maidenhair ferns, I love them but they don't love me 😪

Pinning is good but I find that misting the plant in the pot and misting the vines activates the nodes and causes the plant to sprout ew growth. It works with my String of Hearts very well. Also the trailing vines are also misted and the nods form new growth. Thanks for the video.

I just found this video through a google search. I’m completely new to plants, but decided to buy myself a few as a challenge and this was one of the plants I bought. Ive been browsing plant care websites and it’s all just nonsense gibberish to me. I read the care tips and forget immediately. But I feel like I just learned SO much from your video, and I now have faith I will be able to keep this plant alive thanks to your invaluable tips and tricks. 😊 I am excited. This is SO helpful! I just bought a string of pearls and I'm trying to take every precaution so I don't kill it! I'm leaving it in the nursery pot for a bit, waiting for the pot and mix I ordered to arrive. But knowing how to repot it in the very best way is so wonderful. It's kind of comforting. Thank you so much! Also that pot you got is lovely. Thanks for sharing your knowledge! New Subscriber!

Late to the party, but I appreciate the information about pinning. I inherited a very sad looking string of tears. It looks to me like it has been over-watered. It's very scraggly and mostly has strings on the outside edge. I will try pinning it to see if I can encourage some new center growth. I use pinning to propagate spider plants. I don't root them in water. I just cut off the baby spider, put it in a small pot with a dent in the soil and pin it down so that it remains in contact with the soil. Keep the soil relatively moist until it roots and starts to show sign of new growth.

So fortunate I found you after watching multiple videos looking for info on how to make my one string of dolphins more bushy so it not only looks healthier but is. Also the vines are thicker and look so much better than my scraggly one. One question in particular, what kind of metal are your pins made of because I've heard certain metals will hurt your plant when others won't. Thank you for such a GREAT VIDEO. Black Gold Cactus mix, I've found, is good. It isn't largely peat-based like most other so called cactus mixes are.... It contains more gritty material. Still, with some succulents like Ashley's String of Bananas, I find a bit more added pumice can work wonders!

Stephanie NC, Yes what most stores sells labeled as “cactus and succulent soil” is just too heavy in organic material. And usually causes rot in these guys except for certain places where the climate is very hot and dry, in which case it could be tolerable. But for most succulents the miracle grow or other big brands of “succulent soil” are usually much too heavy to give them their best chance, and a happy long life. You can mix in some different additives with the succulent soil and make it much better! Pumice is the best additive in my opinion, but pearlite, vermiculite, sand, granite, etc., can be used as well. If you look in the playlist section you’ll see some videos on soil, that will probably help clarify some things. I’m also going to try to make a video on how to amend regular succulent soil, I just have to buy a bag of store bough soil to do that and keep forgetting! 😝. But I do have several videos on soil currently that hopefully will be helpful! If you have any other questions please ask! I try to answer all I can, or if I’m not around other great viewers often help out as you saw! 😉. Hope that helps a little! Have a great weekend! 💗

my arch nemesis Senecios! I've got quasi-nirvana for my string of tears/banana in my walk-in shower but my string of pearls I still struggle with. It's in there too and seems to want more drink than the daily mist/splash from the shower and the supplemental water I give sparingly, but not too much! I'm thinking of moving it to a flatter plate-like planter. It is such a butthead that plant. In my hometown, it's grown on patios in impressive lengths with just the ocean mist and fog to get it by most of the year : l
@phileofarm1
@phileofarm1 6 жыл бұрын
Miranda Ramirez, I’m with you there! These little guys all are ones I have a love/hate relationship with! The string of pearls is by far the most finicky for me too. I had a couple over the last few years. Small little starts here and there. Then I finally bit the bullet last year and ordered THREE six inch overflowing pots of string of pearls, from a reputable seller, because the start I had met a sad end at the hand of a cat, but hadn’t been doing great anyway. I think it dried out way too much when I was too sick to even look at it for about 2-3 months in the summer. It didn’t appreciate that, so when the cat knocked it over it broke everything off and I was too sick to propitiate dehydrated stems when I couldn’t even keep the plant watered. So I decided to just wait till I found a beautiful one some day. But for almost a year I never found a healthy one. So finally I decided to just splurge and buy enough to have a great hanging basket base. But they arrived in plastic mostly rotted! 😭😭. I picked out every stem I could and planted each strand individually in the new pot. And hung a very sparse sad basket up, after 2 hours of untangling rotted strings of peas, and went to watch a movie with my son upstairs. About half an hour into the movie we hear a CRASH from downstairs. The hook had pulled out of the ceiling and the basket I just spent hours trying to rescue was strewn all across my kitchen sink and floor! 😭 Incidentally I found out one of the large hooks in my kitchen was NOT anchored into a stud.... 🙃. And my poor poor already sad from being shipped wet in extreme heat string of pearls were broken into bits covered in dirt, some crushed, lots bruised, strewn all over the sink and floor, and very, VERY sad now! But I wasn’t giving up, and rescued them all again, potted them all and placed them in a window I thought was safe, no other plants had ever been knocked over... and they were rooting and doing surprisingly well. Not many compared to what I ordered, but the few that made it were fighters! But then, either a husband or a kitty, I can’t remember which now, in a freak accident knocked them out a third time, and after that I gave up and determined they were doomed! I concluded they must have been cursed. 😂. No other explanation for that many freak things happening to one more plant. Just kidding! But Ive never had that happen before or since! So crazy! Anyway, I’ve never found another healthy string of pearls since, and I was gun shy to order more after that last order being rotten... But as soon as I find another beautiful healthy plant, I’m gonna grab a few! Cause I’m in love with them, and I’m feeling good enough now I to not let them die, and I’ve learned so much about how to get a healthy root base first and then focus on length, as well as figuring out what kind of a watering schedule works for me in the different seasons here in Idaho. Been a learning curve, and I’m 100% sure they will continue to challenge me from time to time because they are finicky little princess plants for sure! 😝

My troublemaker is by far my string of pearls out of my whole plant collection. I've got 1 mother plant for each banana/pearl/tear and then a bunch of new plants all over my house. If I knew they'd travel well, I'd send you a couple(LMK if you want to try, I would not send them in plastic!!!!). I've found the longer the stems, the higher their needs will be as any trauma to the stem will go down the line and sometimes even spread to neighboring strands and leave bald spots. I love the piled look of fat pearls/banana/tears. I am happiest when I can see their "window" and they're glossy and green. My main pearls are still not up to par with my standard though! I just got the said pearl plant in Dec and have been trimming it trying to keep the love just above the roots to hopefully reset the plant. Its sending off a lot of air roots now so I am going to pot it in something wider but shallow. I got it from HD and their plants are always shocked with overwatering but drying them out always puts dear Senecio into turmoil. I've got rooted cuttings from a plant I lost when I left it accidentally out in a late Fall heat wave (it was in full shade but 106) and those are lovely. I've done so much experimenting on these guys, but so far the general conses is spraying until there are drops on the plant 98% of the time as their main source of water. I feel 9/10 times I am over watering them in quantity. I've started using the pipette waterer on them to better control how much they get when I do feel like they could use a little more watering. I've heard so much "water until it comes out of the bottom" Has never been successful for me. I have some in an experimental mix of coir with this kiln-fired clay nuggets I found meant for hydroponic gardening in aquariums. Their roots remind me of Dendrobium orchids, very fine and fragile. I was thinking maybe more air circ and less "soil" for those delicate roots. The air roots almost seem hardier than the underground roots. The only other plant I've had that has taken over my thoughts prior to sleep or waking up is my equal of a deva Ocotillo!
@phileofarm1
@phileofarm1 6 жыл бұрын
Miranda Ramirez, I’m with you on the watering. The only time I soak mine till it runs out the bottom is in the middle of summer if it’s really hot and they are really thirsty and will dry out very quickly. A quick little sprinkle with my faucet on the rain setting at a low volume just to wet the pearls then the top little bit of the soil seems to be their favorite, not deep soaks. Once in a while a deep soak is needed, but not every time. More frequent watering, but lightly so it dries out fast. 😉. I am dying to try some in gritty mix and see how soaking did in something that held so little moisture and was that airy. I’m convinced so far that like epiphytes, string of pearl roots like a lot more air pockets and grow thicker and healthier when they have that type of medium, and grow finer and thinner when they are in heavier/finer types of soil. But I keep waiting till I find a new string of tears/pearls that needs to be repotted so I can try gritty mix for these guys and compare to the other types of medium I’ve tried.. I’d like to buy two from the same place in Aprox the same condition and put them in two different mixes, treat them the same and compare root systems after 6 months. Hopefully this summer I can do that! And I agree the air roots always seem stronger and healthier, and wonder if they are more for attaching to rocks etc., and that’s why they don’t like fine soils. I know they seem to like more pumice and bark for me, which is why I thought about the gritty mix. Anyway, it is super interesting hearing all your experimenting and findings! Thanks for sharing them! And it’s ever so sweet of you to offer to send me some plants! Right now it’s too cold even with a heat pack I wouldn’t want to risk it. But I’m hoping in the spring I can find some healthy pots locally, as the string of pearls tend to dislike shipping. But if I can’t Find any I might just take you up on your offer later! 😘. Thank you so much for your generous offer, I’m truly grateful for your sharing heart! And thanks for the chat! You’ll have to keep me updated on how your babies do, and I’ll try to do the same! Hugs! 💓💗

Yes, do take me up if you need to. I'll be around :) Yes my thoughts too about the rough and thicker roots, I think those are the spread anchors. This is the medium I was talking about, I've found many uses for it having succulents, terrariums, and orchids. It makes a handsome top dressing too. www.amazon.com/Leca-Clay-Orchid-Hydroponic-Media/dp/B004IAM29K Spring starts here in about 2 weeks, so I'm getting ready! See ya later!

Thank you for all of the useful tips in your video! Super helpful. I’m in California and it’s pretty dry - do you think a coco coir liner would hold too much moisture for this species?

Hello Ashley!! Oh please can you tell me if the bare stems on top (crown) from underwatering be fixed? Also, can new growth be expected on a stem with no bananas?

Boy banana's sure do have a lot of bare string between the banana's. Now I know what the string of banana's look like. Are they normally that sparse and stringy? I expected them to look like pearls or tears. I mist mine 2x a day until wet soil on top of the hanging pot which is a lot of soil under it, once they get older I will water and not just mist then heavy 2x a day any more. Summer I will have to anyway. It is winter 4 seasons here.

These plants tend to grow better in warm and drier areas. I doubt that they are impossible to find in the UK though, just not as easy to find in other countries!

I’m not quite understanding your question... you have a pot with no holes and are wondering if it will be ok? Or were you referring to my pot in the video? If so, the pot I’m repotting then in here in the video does have holes in it. 😉
