How to Reset Chevy Silverado Computer (ECM/PCM)

How do you really reset the computer in your truck? Why is this such a mystery and why can't you locate proper procedures from Chevrolet on this. Well, today I give you my personal experience on resetting the ECM/PCM in my 2020 Chevy Silverado Trail Boss. I found the problem with the KINGBOLEN YA200 OBD2 Port Scanner and I will leave a link below. I am really glad I was able to use this in order to help me find out that I had a communication error. The error was code U0100: Lost Communication With ECM/PCM A. I took my truck to a shop for them to reset my truck's computer. After the Computer was reset, I did also have to do a throttle body relearn procedure. My Auto Stop/Start was not working before the ECM/PCM computer reset and then it started working again.

I did the brakes on my 2022 Denali. Unhooking the battery completely did not reset anything for my. Im going to a trusted mechanic today

That was the main point I was trying to get across in the video. In my experience, resetting the battery may reset some things, but it does not reset everything like most people say.

i thought disconnect battery and than turn on headlights did a reset.? Did you lose infotainment settings after the reset, such as did it still connect to your phone or did you have to set that all back up again?

I never lost any of those settings by disconnecting the battery and turning my headlights on.

I just replaced my motor and had everything taken apart, now that I got my new motor in my idle is all messed up so I have done the throttle body re learn process a few time and seemed to work.. untill it didn’t. It still idles a little high and now if I shift from Drive or reverse to neutral sometimes the RPM’s jump up to 2500-3000rpm and won’t drop back down unless I shut to truck off.. would a ECM re flash be needed to reset this issue??

I did a motor swap years ago and never experienced this issue. Honestly I feel like it depends on the year. The newer the vehicle the more it depends on the computers and what data they are receiving. Did you clean the throttle body and the MAF sensor? If not I would try that and then do a reset on the computer. Don’t take it to a dealer, they will charge an arm and a leg.

⁠@@zachattackcustomsI did clean the throttle body out pretty good yeah, not realizing it would matter I had the throttle blade open to clean all the junk outta the housing and off the blade, I didn’t touch the MAF sensor though. I did try the throttle re learn process a couple times and I thought it worked until I let it idle for few mins and then once I tapped the gas pedal the rpm’s rocketed to 2500-3000 and never dropped.. it’s done it a few times since too

Most people are misinformed about this.... just disconnecting the battery doesn't reset anything, it hasn't really since the late 80's. The correct way to do it is to disconnect both sides of the battery (remove it completely from the circuit) and then hook the two positive and negative cables together with a jumper cable or something similar.... this completes the circuit so the PCM's capacitors can discharge, then turn the key to the on position for approx 10 minutes. This will discharge any capacitors in the circuit which may facilitate the retention of memory by powering the ROM and the RAM modules. Without connecting the cables to each other AND turning the key on, the caps on the printed circuit boards cannot discharge because there are two opens in their circuit (the disconnected battery cables, and the off ignition switch). I don't know where the myth that you can just disconnect the battery came from but that hasn't been true for nearly 40 years. The circuit must be completed and the caps discharged.... that's how it is done. I'm really surprised that info isn't readily available on the internet, must be a trade secret they don't want laymen to know.... job security ya know.

For my actual job, I have replaced several capacitors in my day and know all about discharging them. I tried that before shooting this video and even fully discharging everything did not reset the computer fully.

Hello friend, is this scanner used to code a new ECU? I have a problem with my Silverado, I live in Brazil and there is no one here who can code the new ECU

No, the only way to code the computers in the newer Silverados is to pay to get them unlocked unfortunately. That’s why it cost so much to tune the newer trucks.

Thanks, definitely been trying to learn all the technical terms on the scanners, there is a lot to learn. Biggest thing I’ve been interested in is the fuel trims. Not a certified mechanic by any means.

So don't believe these guys, but buy this scanner. Thanks BTW for the truck info in video like what issues you were having that scanner cured , so on so forth. Best non info info on U tube

That’s the thing, I was preparing to film a video to show the scanner off, I wasn’t having any issues but the scanner found a communication error. The auto/stop start stopped working before and I didn’t really care to get it back but after the shop did a reset on the computer the auto/stop start started working again. This video just reflects my experience with the scanner and I have disconnected my battery several times for different mods and obviously it didn’t reset the computer.

You can’t even buy a decent repair manual anymore. They are useless now. You’d have to buy the Master Mechanics Books to get any real data on your vehicle now. They cost over $3k each 😕

Yep, I hear ya. I used to buy the Haynes manuals at the auto parts store to work on my older vehicles. It's painful now just to try and find torque specs on anything these days. It's mainly just google search and hope the people on the threads are correct.

You can always buy a scanner and do it yourself, you must have missed the point of the video. The point of the story is all these people that say to just disconnect the battery are wrong.

The point of the video is that you can’t reset the ECM yourself by disconnecting the battery, sadly I have to title things by analytics on what people search or no one would ever find the video. The point of the title is for you to see what you are searching for and then get the facts. I only try to help people on this channel, not deceive them.
