How to resolve trailer connection issues

This is a how to video for diagnosing error codes that may appear stating "trailer disconnected" or "trailer battery not charging" when no trailer is currently plugged in. We diagnose these issues by cleaning the plugs out and coating them with Dielectric Grease followed up by inspecting wiring and connections further down the line.

@rlayoutube, Great question! Visit ford.com/support/sync-maps-updates/ to get the latest updates for your truck. You will need your vin number to receive the correct updates for your truck. You must have a clean USB drive 16GB or more with nothing else on it. Format the USB to exFAT format prior to adding the updates you download through Ford. I believe the Sync 4 system in those trucks can also be updated over WIFI without using a USB. If you go to the Ford Support page and enter your Vin Number they are really good at providing the steps you need for updating your specific truck. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi, I am having the same problems with my 2020 F150 ( trailer disconnected / trailer connected etc) ! Would you know how to reset the ‘trailer error code module’ within the computer or only dealers can do the reset ?

You should be able to use an ODB2 port code reader to clear any error messages that come up. If you've done the steps in this video another way to narrow down where the problem is to have another truck plug into the trailer your having the message with and see if it comes up on their truck. If it does the problem is trailer side. If not it's truck side. I found on my 14 f150 the plug behind was not locking in used duck tape to hold in place driving me nuts with the disconnect message

Nice find I bet that was annoying. I think there's a metal clip that's suppose to keep the plug retained on the back side. Duck Tape for the win!

Do you have any information on a no right turn/stop light. I have replaced the Trailer tow module. Still didn’t fix it. And it’s on multiple trailers both 7 pin and 4 pin connections.

@miturebenisdeety1182, I briefly had an issue with this on my other trailer but it went away. It sounds like your issue is on the truck side. I would check the pins on your plug to make sure they are not bent or corroded. I would then remove the plug to clean it out and make sure you have a good connection on the back side. If this doesn't solve it you may have a pinched or frayed wire so I would try tracing it all the way back to the fuse box to see if you can find a break in the wiring. If you still can't find it you could run a new wire in conduit to bypass the issue.

One other suggestion is to plug your trailer into someone else’s truck to see if it’s a problem on the trailer or on your truck.

Check your ground on the trailer light. I had on with that issue.

11:08pm hope you can help. I have a 2015 f-'150 . I'm having trouble with my towing brakes controller, when I add more pressure to my trailer brakes I'm only getting one bar. Do you have a idea. Ford changed the controller inside and it still does it . Do you think what you did would fix it. Help me please Rhonda . 6:38

@rhondamartinka3666, is this when you apply pressure at the peddle or by squeezing the slide? You can add more gain when pressing the brake peddle by pressing the plus button on the controller to add more brake pressure when applying the brakes at the peddle. If your getting the one bar when squeezing the controller it makes me think it could be trailer related. Have you tried towing a different trailer or hooking a friends truck up to the trailer to see if you get the same result? Trailer brakes need to be adjusted or replaced from time to time. Since your getting some electrical response I think it might be trailer side.

We have a Brand new 2024 Ram Unlimited. We factory ordered the tow package. We took a trip, and we kept getting the message trailer brake disconnected. When we get the message, we have NO trailer brakes. We need a resolved asap.

Sounds like an issue I had with my first camper. It ended up being the trailer’s 7 prong trailer plug that needed replaced. Here’s a detailed video on how I diagnosed another trailer brake issue with my second camper by process of elimination. I bet your issue is with your trailer. Start with the trailer plug and if that’s not the issue, follow your trailer brake wires from front to back to identify if there are any frayed, pinched, or cut wires.

@Danielcruz6123, I have ran into this problem myself. First try cleaning out your trailer plug with compressed air and use dielectric grease on the metal pins. If this doesn't work the trailer plug may be damaged or corroded and will need to be replaced. I've had this same issue happen on two different trailers and replacing the plug fixed the problem. Let me know if this fixes your issue.

It doesn't matter if the pins are corroded or not, Ford went with Pollak for these. That should tell you all you need to know. They are as sensitive as a PlayStation 2 disk.
