Anytime I get a price complaint from a client or potential client. I remind them that I have over 20 years of experience and can guarantee my work.

Wow the video lens quality is superb. In my experience some people will never agree on price. I've learned to drop people fast to save my time. Realtors and landlords are the worst, its always a race to the bottom with them. They should just hire employees. With my customers they never want me to remove work to lower the price they just want me to do all of the work at a lower price 😂 They don't want it split up, they want it all just cheaper. Its an artform. Last week during a negotiation I was firm on $350 and he was set on 300, I already lowered it from 400. I raised my arm to give him a fist bump and leave "alright sir call me when you decide" he looked so bewildered, like are you.really leaving? I.said yes, we aren't agreeing on the price, I ended up charging him 400 for just a little more work 😊

Absolutely, realtors and landlords, by far the most difficult to get a reasonable profit from, and to work for in my experience. House flippers too, in some cases.

We're not running a charity!!! If someone immediately starts complaining about price I thank them for the opportunity to quote the work and walk away. Some customers are not the type of people you want to do business with anyway. Find customers that appreciate high quality, professional work and will pay for that service.

When I used to sell cars some liars... I mean buyers would come in and get an unsuspecting salesman to give them a quote in order to take it to your competitor and use it to negotiate a better price. My son and his wife did it to me with a brand new Neon. So never itemize your quotes. You don't want to help your competition out. And that is a solid reason to give to the prospect for not itemizing.

Hi Allen, I was wondering how do I go about doing handyman work say on Friday, Sat. and Sunday unless its a small job. So basically a part time thing. Thanks, Nate

Hey Nate, if you have a full time job you will need to make your handyman gig work around that so I would just start up and inform your clients that you are only available those days, the client doesn't need to know why you aren't available, just tell them my next availability is such and such date. Does that make sense?

Yes it does. What about advertising ? I subscribed to thumbtack and craigslist and nextdoor. but it seems like i'm losing money on thumbtack. I've got 2 jobs from that and a few from word of mouthHow do you think I should go about it? Thanks again Allen. Nate@@handymanjourney

I tell them flat out, lets do this on saturday, this Saturday is booked but next saturday is available. If they ask why, tell them you keep your prices so low you have to keep a regular job 😁 even though you are charging correctly

I just tell them my next available day (which is only Fridays and Saturdays). I also set my niche to be only jobs I am certain I can finish in that one weekend.

I feel like I can get someone to do this for $5000 (aka half) “I agree, but I am not the low cost provider. Being licensed, insured, and bonded while offering a warranty… Knock me out of that price range. I am looking to develop a long term relationship. For instance, the next time you have an issue with your home, you know who to call. You’re not wasting time, money, and energy finding a qualified person, who has experience, is insured for the purposes of protecting you, bonded so you’re not worried about having your money taken, and warranted .. so you’re not paying double. Let’s get this job on the schedule for the stated price, start this relationship, and take this project, along with all future projects off your plate. Something to that efffect will work. Also, qualifying your lead is really important. Example … there is a newer Cadillac in the driveway …. Will make it rain 💴 Nice sales objection video

And many times it's not even about money but so that they can feel they won something... If you charge 400 they'll fight for 300. If you charge 300 from the beginning they'll fight for 200. When I had clients I knew were like that, i always inflated the estimate a little, so we could do that dance and finally agree on the actual amount it would normally cost 😂

Some of these selling points are valid. However, price is an important factor. For example, installation of a toilet. I purchased the new toilet and it was on site. I removed the old toilet and disposed of it. The seal and bolts were provided for the job. There was no structural damage to the floor, subfloor was excellent. What is a fair price to install a toilet that will take 30 minutes or less to complete ? I had 2 handymen and one plumbing company provide estimates. The estimates ranged from 250.00 to 300.00 dollars. This is all about price and not a thing to do with selling points. A fair price should be around 120.00 dollars for 30 minute job. As a 70 year old man I try to hire work out and help local guys out but not at these rates. I just ended up installing the toilet myself. An easy task that took 20 minutes. Sad when people try to take advantage of you. The answer is be more competitive in your pricing and you will get a lot more work.

I understand you and I used to feel exactly the same way, but $120 is about average total costs for many companies per house visit. That is good for a individual handyman that doesn't have much if any business expenses, someone who doesn't have a fully equipped business. $150 -$250 is a service charge minimum for many small businesses, not to take advantage of anyone, but to remain solvent and avoid business failure.

I'm a little confused. I know you work in CA too, and how are you doing over $500 per project? I have seen one thing that said if it's not part of the structure, is this how you are coming up with a $10,000 job?

#1 takeaway is that a business license sole purpose is to allow the government to take money from you in the form of taxes. Get away from this mindset. Insurance is one thing. A license DOES NOT do anything to ensure good ethical and complete work...NOTHING. You are creating a contract to give money to the government, that is all. Stop getting LLCs and licenses.
