Based on an interview with the owner of the solution finish, he said the the greying of plastic is oxidation (which we probably all know), but one thing that surprised me was when he said silicone as it breaks down acts as an oxidiser, and that happens in as short a time as just a couple days. This is why many of the older style dressings needed reapplication every week. I still bought some Perl based on your videos though :)

This is a great product. Lasts a long time and has no greasy residue. I love the low gloss finish. Best used on textured black plastic.

Another great video, thank you. I find Solution Finish as by far the best "restore" product on the market, so only break it out for severely faded plastics. I think the instructions used to tell you to coat it. I spray Meguiar's Plastic & Vinyl D4510 after Solution Finish drys. I scrub the top coat of the faded plastic with an IPA wipe, and then apply Solution Finish. Let it dry and then cover with the D4510. Last for months and I just maintain the trim with whatever dressing I"m using after that.

Yes, good fair and honest review, however Perl is my go to trim product that seems to last a reasonable amount of time and is quite flexible to what I use it on. I think due the top up aspect of several of go to products Perl offers me far better value and large quantity to spread my sensible limited budget. (I haven't got the deep pockets I once had these days) Tiny bottled products for me never seem to last long (being a guy! Applying with a little nano knat approach) makes me feel that I'm being over charged and not getting value! Great video Jon, thanks 😊👍

I see you changed your format regarding reviewing product or brand... You do a much detailed and further study on one specific product, whereas in the past i felt that you were talking about one brand, and only giving a quick glimpse at each product. I really enjoy that type of video, really getting an idea of the product, and moreover your point of view on it. It is appreciated Jon. Just so you know there is someone noticing ;)

I love Solution Finish myself jon and find topping a single coat with a coating type dressing really boosts durability. Dlux would be ideal over the top and should get you closer to the 6 month mark.

This may be the solution for my fiestas door strips as they are faded and my simoniz back to black doesn't help. Am thinking of getting the door strips sprayed colour coded but in the meantime this will keep it looking nice. May try out the carpro perl first as I like products which last a while

Hi Jon. Love your videos but I came back to this one recently as I've been reading a lot about PERL water spotting. You should redo this test of PERL vs SF by first cleaning the trim piece thoroughly, degreasing using a magic eraser sponge and APC, and then wiping down thoroughly with a panel wipe. I've been told by CarPro themselves that PERL will only bond properly to plastic when diluted 1:3 with water. Apparently using it neat on plastic is a mistake. CarPro also said if the product spots with water it's because the surface underneath is oily so PERL won't bond 100%. Maybe the same goes for Solution Finish. A retest would be great to see. Thanks.

I just started using this based on another recommendation. Works well but will definitely stain bare hands, best to use gloves (used it last night, got lazy, looking now at slightly black fingertips as I type this). True assessment on the longevity and second application. What I like best is the absolute "blackness" it provides, especially on the plastic trim. First use I let it sit for awhile before wiping excess/polishing. As you perfect your technique and especially when doing follow-up coats it becomes easier to use in my experience. I find using a cut up natural sponge works well and distributes or releases better than microfiber, resulting in the product going further. You can also custom cut shapes to fit tight or small areas. I usually do a wedge cut and a small rectangle block. These shapes cover most everything. For ribbed cowling/windshield apron, I use a dedicated small bore-bristle or horsehair detail brush. It really speeds things up when applying here. Great riffing at the intro. Come visit Southern CA....lots of sun and great music venues everywhere. We'll put you on a surfboard at HB pier or Newport jetties....if you don't mind our recent increase in Great Whites......just saying.

Would like to know your opinion on solution finish vs carpro quartz dlux. Dlux acts more of a coating, compared to solution finish which seems to be a more penetrating restorer. I've used dlux on my car which lives outside, and I'm impressed. Wiper shroud is black as ever after 6+ months, but then my exhaust shrouds have diminished a fair amount - not sure why.
@951Jah
@951Jah 7 жыл бұрын
For your exhaust, you may need a coating with a higher temperature rating. I'm not sure what Dlux is rated at but it likely won't stand up to the heat of an exhaust for too long
@LLLLuuuuKKKeeee
@LLLLuuuuKKKeeee 7 жыл бұрын
My exhaust shrouds are fairly large, some parts are far away from the exhaust tips. I doubt those areas would heat up much at all. Since dlux is a also a rim coating I would imagine the heat rating should be very good

Hi Just bought a year old golf gti and the front plastic trim has, what looks like, water or chemical marks on the plastic lower grill and the surround to the lower fog lamps. I have tried auto finesse revive and apc cleaner, however the marks are still there. Was looking for advice and possible products to use. Thanks
@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 4 жыл бұрын
its impossible to say without seeing it Iain.. It could be like a white film of chemical etching you get from using like cautic cleaners or harsh acids.. sometimes its a bugger to fix. you have tried washing it with APC etc.. no joy.. next try a water spot remover.. if you dont have one test using some vinegar or lemon juice, just to see if it improves it, if it does you could buy like gyeon water spot. but I suspect it wont improve it. If its pourous plastic trim, theres not much more you can do. You can try and pack it with solution finish and mask it. Ive actually seen a lot of people have to replace trim because of this problem. Hope this helps Im just guessing because I cant see it.
@IMon503

@@ForensicDetailing hi, thanks for the reply. Tried apc, distilled vinegar. Auto finesse revive partially masked it. There is no etching the surface is still smooth. Not sure whether to use back to black, g technic trim restorer or similar to mask it or try a heat gun on it. Thoughts please?
@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 4 жыл бұрын
@@IMon503 is it a smooth gloss finish piece of plastic? is it clearcoated? If its a smooth gloss finish you can use a fine polish on it for sure (machine polish it basically). If its textured pourous plastic I would try solution finish if its black plastic.

could be long response, that would delve into the general benefits of use of ceramics.. main reason why joe public wouldnt use a ceramic on trim is they would see a tiny bottle and a bigger price tag, and a product with a lower shelf life.. the product requires perhaps some understanding of the nature of ceramics and what its giving you and perhaps a slightley more careful prep and application. can be awkward applying to scuttle pieces as well (harder to access some parts of it below the wiper blades and in the recesses).. simply put 99% of joe public are scared off.. a traditional silicone based product can be loaded into a morter tube and launched at the car, the explosion on impact would cover most of the vinyl rubber and plastic and the rest could be wiped off with bog roll! (its easy to sling on basically)

dont use it beyond its concentration. If your using it in interiors go 5:1 spray it into a microfiber applicator and spread it all over the dash etc.. never spray it onto the surface. On tyres spray it into your brush and totally cover the wheel in loads of product and leave it there for 30 minutes then remove excess. It has incredible durability. the biggest risk is using too much and getting spotting. if its running your spraying it onto a surface.. spray into the applicator.
