I drive HGV, the key is easy, drive past your parking spot a few metres, turn right to make a kink in between the car and caravan, drive backwards and follow it round and make adjustments to steering as necessary, no need for big hard turns. :D

Spot on. No need for hard lock turns as in this video. Use all of the space in front first whilst driving forwards.

To avoid direction of turn confusion hold the wheel at the bottom with one hand and turn that in the direction you want the back of the caravan to go. But, as has been said below, putting a kink in the link between van and car while still driving forward means you set up for the reverse before it starts and you don't need to bother. As long as there's room that is.

A great tip I picked up was to phone the wife whilst she was guiding me at the back of the van. No more dodgy hand signals or muffled shouts....just a clear (hands free) conversation whilst I reverse and she guides

A lot of people get confused when trying to steer in the opposite direction than their brain tells them to. If you move your hand from the top of the wheel to the bottom and move your hand in the direction you are used you end up steering in the right direction. Both of my enclosed trailers (30' and 23' long hitch to tail) would be as large as the larger UK caravans and my tow vehicles are both bigger than anything that a UK caravan owner would be driving (one is a 42' long class A coach).

This is good, but I always try and gain the correct position I want to reverse into first whilst driving forwards, to prepare for the reverse manoeuvres. Thus avoiding hard lock turns where possible.

Use the steering to steer the car, use the car to steer the caravan, think of which way the car needs to be and you shouldn't get confused which way to turn the wheel.

This is a good video but still lacks a lot of details I am looking for. I certainly understand the concepts of "turning the wheel in the opposite" direction. Where I am having trouble is for a 90 degree turn after the initial turn and the caravan "heading in the right direction", do you straighten the wheels (ie bring them back to centre) or turn the wheels to the opposite as you had them to start your turn? The overhead shots from the video are brilliant except it cuts away at pivotal moments...ie when the wheels are straightened and then turned to the "other" side to follow the caravan. What I find lacking in almost every video is the details of "how much" and "when" to turn the wheel. In the video, it sounds like you should start with turning your wheels all the way (full lock) to start the turn. Is this correct? Then once the caravan is "heading in the right direction" should I bring the wheel back to center? It appears that is what is shown in the video, after which the wheel is turned to the opposite side that you started to follow the caravan in. It would be great if you re-edited the video to highlight the wheel position at every point in the turn and don't cut away to someone turning the wheel.

Hi J O Leger. Thanks for your comment. If you're trying to reverse the caravan at 90 degrees, once you've begun the turn with a full 'reverse' lock, and the caravan is turning sharply in the correct direction, then turn the car's steering wheel to 'follow the caravan round' - ie, as if you were reversing the car into the space, so in the opposite direction to the initial turn. If you're trying to achieve a sharp, 90 degree turn, a full lock is necessary. If your angle of approach is more gentle then a full turn isn't always necessary.

@@CampandCaravanning - Thanks for the reply. I am not trying to be mean but rather point out the gaps of detail in your video. Unfortunately, everything you just said I already know. It is the details of "when" to start "following the caravan round" that are missing. The statement "when heading in the right direction" is WAY too vague. Look at your video at the 2:15 mark. The wheels of the car are not pointed left like they were at the start of the turn. They seem to be pointed straight meaning the driver is starting the transition to "follow the caravan round". Is the position of the caravan at this point what you would consider "pointed in the right direction"? If so, can you explain a bit more? The angle of the trailer would NOT seem to be pointed in the right direction especially to someone with little experience. The cut-away scene to the interior of the car from 2:09 to 2:15 is really bad as that seems to be the critical point. The driver in the video initially turns left (full lock) and then seems to turn the tires until they are back to centre for about a second or two and then only turns them to right to follow the caravan round. This "centering of the tires" is never mentioned in the narration but seems critical to the turn. If you ever decide to remake this video, I would not cut to the interior of the car showing someone turning the wheel. We all know how to turn the wheel. I would focus mainly on the overhead shot but pause at the critical moments to highlight the essential factors involved. (ie which way the wheels are pointed, position of the caravan) The only time I would show interior shot would be to show what the position caravan looks like from the drivers seat....either in the mirror (like you did in the first minute) or out the window. To be honest, your video is one of the better ones I've seen, mainly because of the overhead shot. If just had an extra level of detail, it would be much better. ie "Turn left full lock; Start your turn; Once the back bumper reaches point X (or something to that affect), center your wheel for a second; As the caravan continues to turn, turn you wheel to the right to follow the caravan round".

All these words, words, words.... you’ll never remember what they say, best go somewhere and experiment. It’s useful to know, however that if you want to straighten up, steer towards the caravan side you can see in the mirror.
