This has worked like a treat so far, Cut it back as described and within a day had 3mm of growth , 3 days later 10mm of growth. Hopefully this trend will continue. Thanks for the advice.

I have a washie here in Ontario. It looked healthy when i unwrapped this spring. Green and no spear pull. About a mont later it started to die so I did the cut bavk. I took it to about three inches off the ground and a couple of days later, boom! It started to push a new frond. Amazing who this works.

On Feb 12, 2012 we hired arborists to cut down our mature grove of 100'ft tall Eucalyptus. One of those guys took his chainsaw and cut one of our palms nearly to ground level. I have a home on the Big Island of Hawaii. We had a major Volcanic Eruption a year ago. Our home was about a block away from the big fissure, all our trees in the jungle had no leaves left from the gas emitted. All our coconut palms survived at first, then one of them stopped growing any new fronds, she's about 6yrs old and 12-15 ft high. She has one green frond left is all. Think I should do this? I'd hate to lose her. Lack of rain is not the problem we get approx. 130 inches per year. Thanks in advance, that's amazing. Hey, you wouldn't happen to know Mike Dennison on Quadra Isle would you?
@BananaJSSI
@BananaJSSI 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that. This method really only works with a couple of species and I only know of it working on Washingtonia besides these Trachycarpus palms. I highly doubt it will work on a crown shaft species. Quadra Island is far north of our island, but I have been there many times and it is quite nice, very laid back and quiet . It is approx. 150 miles north of our Southern Gulf Islands

Hi Banana JSSI , I am in Ireland 🇮🇪, where chusan palms do quite good, mine became dormant, so I’m trying your tip . I sawed down to hard material, but see no sign of life. It was in that dormant state for about 3 years, so I probably ought to have done this way sooner

This will work on some but not all Trachycarpus fortunei. It just depends how much life is left in the palm. Other people use this method and often it works, but a not a 100% guarantee. At transplanting time always use transplanter liquid to water it with. Best topsoil in the hole and keep it moist and never let it dry out or they can go down hill fast.

I have a Palmetto tree newly planted close to the end of summer. Coming out of a mild South Carolina winter the fonds are starting to turn brown. The whole time up until about a month age the tree had nice dark green fonds. The tree did start to push some new fond growth then suddenly seemed to stop. It’s warming up here now in South Carolina so what do you think? Will the warmer weather save this Palmetto tree? Do I need to add fertilizer around it right now? Should I drill a 2 inch hole near the root ball and water it once or twice a week? Oh by the way it’s growing in clay soil as well. I have another Palmetto tree about 6 feet away from this one and it’s not having any issues at all and growing well. Both trees were planted at the same time. Everything I did to one tree I did to the other. So I don’t understand why it looks like it’s starting to die.

I have 10 Canary date palms aged between 10-20 years and 4 huge ones over 60 years old. I tried to remove 2 of the smaller ones (which were becoming a nuisance) by cutting the tops off, exactly as in your video, but they went crazy with new growth and in 5 years grew above the house and became great shade trees for my bedroom and pool. I only recommend you do this with palms that you think are dying anyway (usually extreme frost or drought) until you are sure it works with that particular species.

@@earthwindfireable I never heard of the urine thing. This palm was indeed dead and did not regrow. I did an update video on it. I have done this with other palms in the past and they are doing well. I also have videos of them here. I didn't know I had an accent lol

You had new ones coming up, all you did was kill your tree
@BananaJSSI
@BananaJSSI Жыл бұрын
No, didn't kill the tree, since it was already near death. Have you seen my video of the Trachycarpus palm we have that cut to nearly ground level with a chainsaw? You should see it now over 2 years later, it looks amazing. This method works if there is life left in the trunk. I know that for a fact

Why don’t you water them
@BananaJSSI
@BananaJSSI 2 жыл бұрын
Watering won't do a thing. They already had ample moisture so the next step is try to encourage new growth from the trunk if there is indeed life in them. You can cut them and hope for the best and some times they will send out spears, however if they are much closer to death then cutting will not do a thing

can i do this to a pygmy date palm? ive seen a lot that says cutting it this way will kill it.. but the palm i received was absolutely 100% dried out. it only had the smallest bit of green in just a couple of spots so i decided to try to save it. i cut the date palm this way but again everywhere else i have looked has said that cutting the palm from the top will kill it entirely.

Unfortunately it won't ork on all palms, I have seen it done on Butia and Washingtonia as well, but Phoenix I have never seen it done
