@@michaelmarkofski4073 Really?? Roughly how long ago was it? I took the course about 13 years ago. We didn't even have a road test. Everything was done in the parking lot of a local community college. They took off points for the first driving part, but the final/second time on the bikes we had one guy flunk for it.

The MSF teaches situational awareness that’s useful and if nothing else it saves you on insurance and allows you to skip the riding test at the DMV.

@@swashbuckler139 I've only ever ridden like 70cc dirt bikes, so it's pretty quick for me. You won't win in a race with a decent car, but you shouldn't be trying to race anyway. You can go from 0 to 40 in a few seconds which is wild from the perspective of always having driven slow cars/a V6 f150

My first bike experience was at about 12. Went to a farm with my parents to visit and the elderly lady on the farm took one look at this kid - handed me a rifle and a box of ammo. Pointed to the barn and said there was a motorbike I could play with. No helmet, gravel roads and a loaded rifle. Took me about a half hour to figure out how the bike worked. Clutch etc. took off and had a great time. Oh the 70’s. Good times.

The insurance savings per month ALONE is good enough reason to take the MSF. The course was $275 for 2 days, but because of it, I now save $70 a month on insurance. For all you math wizzes, it paid for itself in almost 4 months.

@@fulesmackofule yeah but you're probably required to get some kind of proper license to drive a bike which means you went to theory classes and at least a couple practical driving hours with an instructor. Insurance here would be a lot more expensive if people could just prove they barely know how to operate a bike at the DMV and then be allowed to hit public roads on their own.

That's kinda crazy. Get yourself a 350 or smaller. Maybe 25hp. You just don't want to go fast, you want to stop, take curves, slopes, hills, gravel and wet.

According to the RegularCars video on it, the Hayabusa actually can be docile if ridden gently, he said it's not as terrifying as people think it is ... unless you want it to be of course. Still probably not a good idea though, start on something humble.

Honestly wish more people would emphasize the importance of a light motorcycle as a first bike. I was recommended certain heavy bikes to look at because they were slower and tamer so when I did my MSF on a Z125 no problem, when I got my first bike and started off on my first ride I dropped it at zero miles an hour several times just because I wasn't used to something several hundred pounds heavier. I was overly cautious in a lot of respects when I learned to ride, but the weight factor was something I never once considered and it caught me.

@@albertomendoza2251 look at bikes under or around 400 lbs. My triumph scrambler is 500+ lbs and it has the weight a bit higher up than most bikes. KTM has a lineup of very light and fun bikes the 200 Duke, 390 Duke. The Yamaha MT03 is in the range you're looking for as well. Honda's Rebel lineup has some very beginner friendly bikes as well if you're more cruiser sighted. Hope that helps!

Same thing happened to me. Even an R3 feels crazy heavy if you've NEVER ridden before. Dropped mine half a dozen times during my first week training in a parking lot.

MSF is the way to go. It's a controlled environment. They provide the bikes. The instructors are patient. And you get your certificate to avoid the DMV test.

My instructor was not patient at all. Well, one of them was. The other one was a super young, arrogant little bastard. Who was screaming at everyone, and had some problem with women. He failed me, and another woman, but he passed men that even dropped their bikes in the exam.

I had the same experience. I even had to give up the bike I was on (the only one that I could ride without my knees touching my elbows) for the female in my class because she wouldn't put her feet on the pegs, despite me being well over 6 ft. and her being like 5' 6". And then the instructor clowned me for looking like a bear on a tricycle because I was on the lowest bike in the class.

Meh. MSF was worth it for me in the US just for being able to skip the exam. The DMV was always backed up so it was either the MSF course or wait 2-3 months for my test appointment. Otherwise, it took me like 2 weeks to get my license.

I loved the MSF course. Heck, my wife did it twice so that she could accompany a friend the 2nd time. I highly recommend it. I had zero street bike experience, and had only rode a tiny dirt bike (no clutch) a bit, about 25 years prior. Aced the written and riding parts, including that dreaded figure-8-in-a-box. :)

I am an ex experienced rider but I haven't ridden for 20 years. I now have a bike and to be quite honest this is helpful. I can ride 'ok' but tomorrow I will be practicing low speed in a parking lot. Back in the day, I could do the figure 8 in a box on my VFR750 with ease.

I took a diving class once. Only guy who never donned gear before so I was left behind and only got thru half the class. Lesson learned, so I didn't want to start the MSF class being the only guy who never shifted a bike before. A friend took me to his farm to practice on his 100cc. I learned how to take off and shift that day. Then I bought a used 250 that I still have and practiced weekly at the school parking lot. Then I took the MSF class and as I predicted, everybody had some experience on cycles so I'm glad I did what I did and not be the only person in that class with zero experience.

Exactly. My wife and I both took the class with ZERO experience and had no issues. Passed the test and skipped the DMV. That alone was worth the price of the class.

I’m 17 years old about to turn 18 in a week. Half a day ago I passed this test with one point counting against me, and I had never once operated a motorcycle before Saturday morning, the 4th of September. If I can do it anyone can! MSF course is amazing and works wonders, obviously

Thank you for the video, greatly appreciated. I had no experience with a bike at all when I took the class, they didn't cover this at all. The weather turned bad so we were rushed through the course. Just learning how the bike feels under you and how it acts in response to you is a big help when your a novice. Been riding for years now, it's a love I've had since a small child and will have till I die.😊

The hardest thing to convince a new "wanna be" motorcycle rider is that motorcycles "want" to be stable at speed. A bicycle going 20mph (to me) feels MUCH less stable than a motorcycle at the same speed.

I jumped straight into the MSF without ever having ridden a motorcycle period. It really wasn't that hard. The instructor was awesome. He laid out the rules, did the paper test snd then same day we hit the course. 2nd day of course I was doing just fine. I was actually better than most veteran riders there. Two people failed, unfortunately. And one of those people were looking to get a motorcycle license to be a motorcycle cop. Which it is probably better he doesn't do that. High speed chases on a vehicle you don't quite understand the physics of is not a good idea. Wouldn't want to see him in the paper dead after he wrecks at high speed. Anyway. I think the biggest thing is that people shouldn't be afraid. Number one. Don't be afraid. There is a difference in being afraid and respecting the machine. I would always respect the machine. The machine is unforgiving and has no conscience. It is not alive. So it's up to you to control the machine safely. I do thus everyday in my field of work. I work with electricity and have seen a lot of people die doing it. Same goes here. Respect it. It isn't a toy. Number two. Actually practice safety. The road isn't the track. No matter how many people you see on KZfaq acting stupid doing wheelies at 50mph plus on the highways and streets. Don't do this. It isn't a competition. It's point A to point B ALIVE. Don't be stupid. Wear your gear, practice safety, pay attention to your speed. Be safe. I have never wrecked a vehicle of my own accord. And there's a reason for that. I always practice safety. And now, I am even more aware of my surroundings since my wreck that happened because of a drunk driver. All I can say is pay attention to this video and be smart, safe, and alive.

Coming across a bit boastful. And people can't really just choose not to feel some fear or anxiety or awkwardness the very first time they ride a motorcycle. People have different psychologies. Some people just experience stronger fear or anxiety responses in that situation. Also a lot of people don't have particularly great coordination or balance on a natural intuitive level and need to spend a little time building up those particular neural networks to develop some muscle memory before they can begin to operate the bike cleanly. People are just different

Great advice. Took and pass my MSF course recently. And wow it definitely humbles you. My instructor gave great advice that a bike is a beast. You got to be able to control it and handle it like you would an animal. It's not a toy like those people on youtube use it like. You gotta respect the bike and it will respect you back. If you don't good luck that bike will show you who's really in control and who is really in charge.

Thanks for this video! I enrolled in the HD Riding Academy, and as a rider with zero experience, I felt the course was way too fast paced! I ended up sitting out after the 6th exercise because I wasn't comfortable cruising in second. I would've liked to spend an hour in first gear just getting the hang of being on a bike. Excited to get out to a big parking lot this week and practice at my own pace!

Sounds like my experience. Only made it halfway thru the first day, and getting 3 attempts to perfect a move before moving on, so I couldn't keep up. The course only crushed what little hope and confidence I had. I'm practicing in a parking lot now, but the slow maneuvers are still beyond me. One thing is for sure, I wouldn't attempt the msf again, I'd rather just take the dmv test when it's time.

I also took the MSF at 57 years old with no riding experience. I pushed through , dropping the bike a couple of times, and making a lot of mistakes but staying was the best thing because I learned to get through really uncomfortable situations which is what your going to encounter on the road. Having said that, this was MY experience.

I had the exact same experience with the HD academy, they were moving too fast, and the sportster I had been given wouldn't properly shift into neutral, even for the trainer

Took an MSF course a few weeks ago. The instructor rushed us through the riding parts and ended classes early. He didn't really let us get used to actually handling the bikes. He also kept putting me on a different bike each time, so I couldn't even get used to how one handled before getting put on one that had a completely different seating position and weight. He wasted my money and my vacation time. I don't have any more vacation to take an MSF course, so all I can do is get a bike and practice by myself.

I took the MSF course almost 18 years ago and just bought my first motorcycle during the pandemic. I went with my Friend and his dad. The instructor was a personal friend of my uncles, but didnt know that when i signed up for the course. Being 18, I felt enormous pressure to not screw up or fail a section because my either my friend would say something or my uncle would say something. I was one of those kids that grew up on his bicycle and already had more than my fair share of road rash. I remember the entire time being in the class wanting to leave the parking lot and go ride around the block by the end of day 2. TL;DR if you feel comfortable on a bicycle, you'd be amazed at how fast you get comfortable on a motorcycle. Even faster if you have any practice with a manual transmission.

I was the Superduke that rode by. I was waiting for this video to pop up to see if you were going to keep me in the video. I literally work 2 mins away from that lot. I was on my way to work. I’ll probably catch a lot of heat for saying this, but this Superduke is my first bike. I have some experience from multiple MSF courses and riding friends bikes, but it’s my first purchase. If you have any questions or would like to hear from a rider’s perspective of buying a Superduke as a first bike, feel free to ask away. Good or bad. I tried powerwalking for the first time today, accidentally hit the throttle and let off the clutch too fast lol, luckily nothing was damages except a small scrape on the kickstand foot. Im legit excited to go riding

This is quite helpful, I have access to a family member's banged up 08 R6 so I will try this with that even if I have to be extra careful since it IS more bike than I should be handling as a no experience wannabe Squid Missile. Good habits start with holding the clutch when turning on. You ask why? Well there is still bikes out there that allow you to turn them on when gear is in and the bike might not be in neutral. Also teach people on just letting the clutch go as the bike will die, people should learn this.

It only took me 5 minutes to learn to ride and a week or so to learn more advanced things. I didn't take any course and simply just started driving no issue. Learning to drive is not as complex as people make it seem. Just be brave and don't do anything crazy. I have good control over things and don't panic when there is an issue so I suggest the same for everyone. Its like driving a bike but no pedaling and too much speed involved

That's a bad course then. All the courses I've taken, I've been fortunate to have guys that were passionate about riding and wanted people to learn and enjoy it. Had my 2nd advanced course(required) and it was geared toward sport bikes. Instructor came out on an r1 to "Stay relevant to the course" lol

I never touched a bike and had no problem with the MSF course. I guess everyone has different experiences but my class had all newbies besides one person who rode their bike to the class and we all got the information without any hassle.

I actually had to drop out of the MSF course because they were going to fast through all the exercises and I couldn't keep up, and I also was in full gear and out of shape, so my entire body was killing me by the end of day one. No big deal though, got my learners permit, bought my Ninja 400 and practiced practiced practiced. Going to retake the MSF course soon to get my endorsement.

I took one years ago, I forget whether it was one weekend or two but yeah I remember feeling it was way too rushed, I'm still shocked they passed me. Even with the endorsement I still didn't feel confident enough to get my own bike and get out on the road.

I hear you, I just took a course and I too felt like it was rushed, It was raining a little bit. They would get me to do one exercise 2 or 3 times but I failed miserably at it. Then after I failed that exercise, they would get me to do a different exercise which was worse than the first one. That was my very first time on a motorcycle ever. At least I can say is NOT once did I ever drop the bike. @@xhiddenkittenx

This is a fantastic video! Good stuff!! I went through each of these steps when my dad taught me how to ride, but it was a Kawasaki 650 on gravel. I tell you what, when you can do a tight figure 8 on gravel, pavement just feels so nice 😂

@@tvbuu Forgot what to do during a turn and kind of panicked. Set the bike down at about 15 to 20 and hit shoulder first. 4 weeks In a sling and now I'm in rehab for strength. Take my next class this weekend though lol

I am taking the course and I am taking my time, (getting more hours on the range) because it was obvious that I was challenged with some of the activities and I needed to make sure that I have control of the bike while also actually doing something. I am a little frustrated at times because we have to do what they tell us in command which is fine but if we need extra practice at certain skills, we do not get to do that. I will be buying my new bike soon, and I will be taking my friend with me to parking lots to practice practice practice !!!

I don't know if this is important to know for this video but feet posture helped me a lot with balance doing this exercises, it's a lot like a good posture when you're on a bicycle, putting the ball of the feet on the pegs and knees close to the tank. I don't know if helps with all types of motorcycles but at least works with mine (Vento Rocketman) and the one that the dude who teached me had (Bajaj Pulsar). I think experienced riders would know more about that. Just wanting to share the advice to noobs like me.

This video was very helpful. I am a 48 yr old single Mom of three sons. My oldest is 21 and just bought a Harley. My middle son is 17 and traded his dirt bike for a Ninja 1000😳. They both have had experience riding however, I have not….except for one of their dirt bikes I nearly crashed years ago!🤦♀️ Well, they convinced me to try again so I just purchased a 2023 Honda Rebel 300! I think it’s a good starter bike for me. I practiced in a parking lot yesterday, but these tips you shared I will definitely be trying. I am also enrolling in the safety training class soon. I know it will be a while before I am comfortable to ride in traffic. I’m nervous yet super stoked! Just going to go at my own pace until I am very comfortable with my Rebel. My 12 yr old (that has a dirt bike now) is already saying he can’t wait to get his first motorcycle too. With 3 sons it’s inevitable I need to learn to ride! Thanks again for the great starter video! As Ivan noted, SITUATIONAL AWARENESS and how to properly POWER BRAKE and NEGOTIATE A CORNER. I have done the basic then after 3 years did it all again. Then 7 years after that, the Expieranced Rider course. The lessons learned have saved my life many times, One it would have been fatal. but power brake and hard lean left was what took over.

Back in '82 I bought a Honda CM400E from a guy, handed him the cash, then asked him how to ride a motorcycle. He kindly showed me where the clutch, brake, throttle and shifter were, then shouted encouragement as I wobbled around his apartment's parking lot. After a couple of laps, I headed out onto the street and rode it home, ten miles in rush hour Phoenix traffic. It was a real sink-or-swim experience and I had to learn fast. I rode without a license for a few months, then went in and passed the riding test at the license bureau. So would I recommend skipping the MSF course? Nope. Will you survive without it? Probably, but it'll take some luck.

Where I live most parking lots have fences around them, and are only accessible during business hours. The rest of the time the gates are locked. So practicing in an empty parking lot is not really an option for me. I think I'll just pay someone to show me the ropes.

Greetings from Latvia. Recently i decided to learn how to drive a motorcycle. As a starting motorcycle i bought a KTM duke 125. Previously i owned a 125cc scooter and a soviet IŽ planeta 4 motorcycle. And i gotta say, there is still a lot to learn for me. So my best course of action now would be to drive to nearest empty parking lot and practice more and more. I really enjoyed the video and for me it was very explanatory. I just bought a bike today. First one in 20 plus years. Great video. I kept clutch stalling starting out. The first part of this video is the most important in my opinion. Very easy do dump a bike on a clutch stall. I didn't today, but it's very easy to do.

@@luckyspaceman I unfortunately got test anxiety while taking the final riding test. And then I moved for work, so I had to put retaking it on pause. I'll try again when I'm resettled though, just got fresh tires put on so my bike is ready to go ^^

New rider from BC Canada here. I feel like it should be addressed that the msf in the US costs less than a couple hundred bucks but im on the fence because here in Vancouver the cheapest course which is equivalent costs 850$. Im still gonna take it but it sure hurts a lot when thats a quarter of the cost of a decent used bike.

Got a bike in March 2019, just as everything shut down.... spent the next 3 months doing drills in the school parking lot next door, watching lots of videos, then slowly ventured out into the world, sticking to roads I was very familiar with from years of road cycling....

I wish I would have gotten on my bike more before my MSF. The most I did was the (mostly) stationary friction zone stuff before the course. Still wish I would have gotten on 2 wheels in a parking lot before hand.

Great video - thank you for this. I'm looking to buy a Rebel 500 (that they don't call a 'Rebel' in Australia for some reason, it's just a CMX500 here), so it's great to see such a similar set up as I learn about all of this. The CMX500 is what's called a 'LAMS' bike here, meaning it's learner approved. The bigger model you're on isn't. I'm waiting to do the compulsory learning course here in Sydney, and it's a few weeks until they have any open slots.

In my province you need 26 hours on a motorcycle before you get your license, 10 of them on the road in an instructor led group ride. I would not recommend people skip the MSF, especially with how much of riding is getting the feel for it, which takes time.

I did about a week of KZfaq learning before I bought my first bike then took the test after riding on a permit for 30 days. Passed my first try. I do want to take a MSF course eventually

Forget counter steering and pressing the bars. just look where you want to go, your solders arms the bars and bike will go. Been teaching road riding in the uk years and nobody’s ever needed more of an explanation than that

Omg! Me too! It's intimidating going that slow and turning the bars all the way to one side, feels like it's going to tip over. I kept going outside the line . I had a bad habit of not turning my head and looking exactly where I wanted the wheel to go and as soon as I did that the bike went where I wanted It to.. it's so strange, everyone to look where your going for safety and all but with a motorcycle, if you don't look the bike won't actually go , even if you turn, it doesn't want to until your head points in that direction
