My first time on adult trike was not fun. It felt like I was sucked sideways off the road and down an embankment. Two cracked ribs, torn shoulder, broken hip. Yes, I am old. Months later I was very afraid to try again but this video and others helped me do it again. This time I did not know it all and now can ride for fun. All the negative about this video I do not understand, it gave me the courage to face my fear and win.

With a trike yyou have to steer all the time to overcome the camber of the road surface which pushes you towards the edge of the road. For an experienced cyclist this feels un-natural, and has to be learnt.

Don’t underestimate the difference, especially when you’re used to riding a 2wheel-bike. If you’re not, you will have no problem. Not only for the handicapped. It’s also and especially ideal for seniors : When people riding bikes get older they often experience more fear of falling that leads to being uncertain on the “normal” bike. The tricycle is the next step to be able continuing riding and excercise outside (physical and social wellbeing) for the seniors + preventing accidents and broken hips for instance. Everyone who is familiar with riding the 2wheelbike, will experience the unnatural feeling that the tricycle gives at first. Because on the tricycle you have to let go the balancing you were used to do automatically. And for older people who used to balance the bike their whole life, it’s heavier to let go and trust the fact that you cannot fall than it is for younger people. So if you never ride a 2wheelbike, you will have no problem to adjust because you have not learned to balance. Anyone can ride it though with some help at first to go as slow as you can, keep looking forward where you want to go and keep your feet on the pedals. Pull on the brakes after every few pedal strokes, stop, put the steering wheel in the right position, look forward and continue slowly, pull the breaks again and so on. Take a pause every 10 minutes or so because the unnatural feeling is tiring. Each time you climb back on the saddle, you will feel the improvement. No wonder that the number of Dutch seniors choosing a tricycle grows by the day. Freedom ! If anyone wants to get help in getting used to the tricycle, you can turn to the Dutch Fietsersbond and ask for instructions.

You made me feel better. I have ridden a regular bike all my life up until about 15 years ago. I just bought a new trike, and it's been a real eye-opener. I kept steering toward the edge of the road for some reason, and in making a turn into an alley I didn't quite make it, ending in the grass. I thought I was losing my mind. I was not feeling stable on it, and the steering felt too loose. The tendency for the bike to go to the edge of the road meant a constant battle to fight it. So much of the ride was "wobbly." I felt defeated, and didn't know what in the world was wrong. I thought there was something wrong with me. But I had to get one of the wheels tightened, so the bike shop came and did that, and talked to me about how bike riders have the most trouble adjusting to a trike. They told me to practice, and that I would get used to the feel of it and other tips. Your description seemed to be written just for me!!

Thirty years ago I had a season racing a tandem tricycle, having previously raced on both solo and tandem bikes. What you have to learn is that the trike has to be steered. Unlike riding a bicycle you cannot lean the trike around a corner. Not only do you have to steer around corners, but you have to steer all the time as the camber of the road pushes you out towards the edge of the road. When you corner a bike you generally have your outside foot down to maintain balance, on a trike you must have your inside foot down in order to keep the inside wheel from lifting off the road. If you have single wheel drive lifting a wheel off the road can be disasterous. When racing a trike it is common to have to hang off the handlebars (much like when sailing) in order to keep the trike upright whilst cornering at speed. As a general rule, if you don't burn a hole in your skinshorts you probably were not trying hard enough.

I got the Schwinn Meridian about 5 years ago. My husband took me there in the car, we saw the trike and I bought it. We were not far from home so I figured I would ride it home. It had been years since I was on bike, and more years than that since I was on a trike. He got in the car and took off, leaving me and the trike to make it home by ourselves. It was tricky at first, but I got it. I usually tell people that if you can ride a bike and drive a car, you can work a trike.

I put a bit of pressure to right handlebar as just a press of a blunt push as it steers LEFT as vice versa on pressing palm on left handlebar to turn RIGHT. Its not a steering motion of your hands swiveling but a force of pressure at handlebar grip ends. The range of the steering is only 4 inches both sides as it is a boxed in turning. ALWAYS SLOW DOWN TO 2 TO 3 MPH on every turn, NEVER go too fast and brake too late as it will cause instability moment of possible crash. Also when Trike is turning with a bit of speed but not over 5 mph, lean body towards opposite ends of turning. The feel of Trikes is the same as a Stage Coach, exactly the same but with a motor wheel instead of the Horse ahead of you. Cant not ride over 20 ot 25 mph on rough bumpy roads, can damage too if not easing and pausing speed. I converted my Vevor MTB trike into a E Trike 1200 Watt, but the high watt is to carry heavy cargo over speed. Its not meant to ride over 25mph , even at 20mph.

I bought a new adult trike 2 months ago from a bike store and he finally got it put to gether and when I ordered it he never told me it didn't have any gears to shift when going up an incline. I paid nearly 700.00 for it. It wants to head into the curb and there are cars parked along the curb that I don't want to hit ! I was so excited to ride it for the excise. But the first and only time I have ridden it I had 2 accidents on it. The first one was when I was going up a slight incline and couldn't quite make it all the way and the trike started wobbling and I guess I panicked and pulled on the hand brake too fast and the trike stopped suddenly and I was throw forward off of the seat and onto the street. I was hurt. But I got up and walked my trike to the top of the incline and got back on it and was doing ok until I was fixing to make a left turn onto another street to go home and a car came up behind me so I moved out of his way and the trike suddenly veered to the left and into the curb with such force that it actually hit the curb and over it throwing me completely off of the trike causing my knee to slam against the cement curb and injury it. I liked to never got myself back up. When I did, I walked the trike around the corner to the street to go home and managed to ride it home. But it's been sitting ever since because of my fear of it and my knee is still in a lot of pain from hitting the curb. I really want to ride my trike, but now I feel it's too dangerous.

Carol -- I understand exactly what you went thru. I too just purchased a trike. I did get one with seven gears though; they help. I'm an old lady who's used to riding bicycles. I was aware of the tendency for a trike to steer itself into a curb (or parked car) and I STILL had trouble with it. Just like you, I was turning around a corner but made the turn too close to the curb and ended up running into the curb. Thankfully I wasn't thrown off the trike as I was cautiously moving very slowly. Riding slowly, steadily and being aware of the road structure all go a long way toward a safe, fun ride. Speed will come with practice if you want it to. So keep practicing with the trike; you'll get it. 👍

I agree with L. Lewis. Try again and build up your confidence on side streets. Cars: they only take precedence on dual carriageways and motorways. Pedestrians have right of way ie: cars have to stop. Cyclists of all kinds have right of way after pedestrians ie: cars have to slow down and wait for a safe place to overtake. It's also safer for cyclists to be a metre from the curb to avoid obstacles. Don't let cars bully you.

The only trike I'd ride is a recumbent otherwise I would pick a two-wheeled bicycle over these tricycles that look like bicycles with three wheels I just recently bought one and I cracked up as soon as I got on it the first time I hit a curb and the tire in the front blew out second thing when I tried to make a sharp turn I tilted it over and fell so I figured I can't make no sharp turns with this kind of a bicycle so I started to make wider turns in the street and all the cars around me decided they didn't like that so they started honking their horns at me these tricycles are very, very dangerous I would not recommend them to anybody let alone seniors.

I'm 81 and was advised by my chiropractor to get a 3 wheeled trike for exercise due to walking problems associated with back problems. Every time i tried to ride it I fell off, mainly due o the camber of either the road or the path. I found it very hard to ride because the pedals were directly under me rather than slightly in front. I became terrified of the thing and when it was stolen from my front verandah, I was actually relieved. I got it back and sold it. I really feel that riding a bike/trike would be a health benefit but am too scared to try again. The trike was a good brand but I think it was poorly designed.

It should be possible to correct the design of adult trikes so they are not "inherently" unstable. These simple hard frame designs can only be ridden safely at very slow speeds. Why do you think children graduate from tricycles to bicycles? So they can go fast enough to actually have useful transportation. Another failure of manufacturers I'd say.
