One big thing if your a stronger rider and you see some one a bit weaker struggling let them know it’s ok to skip a turn if they are really struggling that’s one thing that I have seen on group rides that helps because some time weaker rides try to over reach because they don’t want to be that guy that’s sitting on even if it is only one rotation they miss

It was something my local group did with me whilst I was getting fitter and quicker so that I was still able to be learning how to roll through

Nice video! I got an earful on my first paceline ride when I didn't have a computer on my bike and I surged too much when coming around to the front of the line. After a few miles I realized I was on a solo when nobody was coming around! Live and learn!

I will definitely watch this again before I ride in a pace line. Good stuff!

Most important safety and efficiency tip...keep the wheel in front of you going up and back in the line...don't let a gap open irregardless of how the wheel in front is riding...next tip just ride smooth no quick change of effort

..actually, *the most important safety tip* is don't overlap wheels. Gapping will take care of itself.

It's good to shout last man so the rider behind doesn't lose your wheel as you change lines. Also don't push on the pedals when you drop into line or they won't come around you!

Great riding! Being new to cycling, can't wait to try it with my fellow newbie riders and hope not to crush while we learn.

@@CyclingVirgin you're welcome! On another note, I like how you strictly stick to cycling and don't involve politics or social justice warrior nonsense like other cycling KZfaqrs across the pond. HNY!

When you are on the front and someone is going to move over in front of you sometimes people will yell out “good” to let you know you have room to move over safely without crossing wheels. Just something that I have noticed helps with safety and efficiency of the pace line along with yelling “last” like someone else explained in the comments below. See you at Avondale!!

This was great, thank you Ricky! You covered all the things I've felt like I should know. It's like once you ride a certain amount you feel like you should know these things, but I have just done so few group rides I guess that's why I was ignorant. So thank you for educating me! I like the ideas you're throwing out for future vids, plus just letting us know what's in the pipeline. Feels like a preview almost! Carbon wheels - yes! I am on alloys (Mavic) and have heard things like "free speed" etc but want to know is that true, can you feel the difference in holding speed with the deeper section wheels? And is the crosswind effect drastic or not, is it still worth it? Looking forward to that one. You're doing a great job with these and I appreciate you bringing them to us. Know there's lots of work, planning involved, but they are appreciated. Took me a couple days to get to this one but of course completely worth it. Hope your Christmas was fun and all the best for you in 2019!

How do you know if you are last and need to move over, in this case from right slow line to the left fast line.

UPS1000 in our group rides, we typically call out “ last “ Then you know that you have to start pedalling harder and jump in behind.

Yes, call out “last”. On top of that you should be aware of the size of the group. If there are ten riders and four bikes pass by you on the fast side it’s probably a good time to get ready to move over to the fast side. Also I check with the side of my eye to make sure if there is absolutely no one rolling even if they call last.

When to power up and when to power down in the pace line? Do I need to be looking at the guy 2 bikes in front of me, to figure out when I need to start powering up to get in the ‘fast’ lane? Got chastised a couple times last time I did this. Thx!

How close should you be behind the bike in front of you?

scientifically in terms of power I'm not sure if it's actually the most efficient. Because the most efficient should be everyone in a aerodynamic line and never get out of line. but I know what you mean, it's the most fast way for a group of riders because they can distribute the load. I've never done a pace line and I think I'd be okay riding one as long as the group I'm with wasn't a lot faster then me.

it's only the most efficient if it's done correctly, which I have never seen on a group ride. gaps should never open up and everyone has to be on the same page. if you can sit off the back comfortably then its pointless. most times in group rides just a regular rotation where you take short pulls of a minute or so seems to work best in my opinion.

You should address what you do when you have the guy who rips through and gaps the rider behind him. There is always a dude who puts in a 3 zone jump to come around messing it up for all. You have to learn how to let him dangle. Also if you have 15 people like that, who cares if someone sets out pulling then attacks the climbs? That doesn't change your workout and I dont think you get any ribbons at the end of GR's.Seem like your kinda GR Nazi. Dont get your feelers hurt so easy.. Good vid.

Good explanation on letting someone dangle out front if they come through to hard. Im just giving advice here if you dont mind being that guy then go for it, sit in and "Win" the group ride. My feels are fine, just trying to help people not be that guy that everyone talks about in a negative light at coffee after the ride.

@@CyclingVirgin The more I thought about it you were right. We had a cat 2 kid floating off the back of a 8 man group ride then would tail gun off the back at sprint points and climbs. We hatted him within about 30 mins..

Why not ride in a single or double line and just let the front rotate to the back instead? It's harder to do this your way as not everyone is equally strong so stronger guys can stay more at front

It is amazing to me that people putting videos up, and they do not have any idea what they talking bout! How stupid that is! He never talk about: - not to speed up when you are leading, but keep a constant speed. - signal with your hand you slow down -point to road debris way ahead not in the last minute -
