INTRO: Every day comes with a theme, and the theme of my third day in Saigon was transportation. You see, Saigon is a very large city, and like every visitor I had to learn how to get around.

I wonder if that is because deep down, I feel like a 12-year-old. 😀 I'm just staring out at the world around me and trying to figure out just what the heck is going. Everyone around me usually seem to know exactly what is happening and what to do. And I'm often bewildered, so I really try to understand things. I guess I'm obsessed with systems and figuring out the details of how things work and are organized. 🤪

Lol. I've been living in Vietnam for 10 years. I've ridden the bus about five times total. The bus just takes too long and Grab is so cheap. Nowadays we live way out in the rural province so we have a car. You did a great job explaining how to cross the street in Saigon. Most newbies don't know how to do it. I might add, whatever you do, don't run in traffic and don't make any sudden movements or changes in direction.

Your first breakfast is what i would do over fancy restaurants. Nothing beat the authentic Vietnam breakfast experience. Good discover. Do more of these for 1st and 2nd breakfast .. 😄 Cc My guess it would be mince pork beside mushroom. The white disc i would chance to guess is yam n the other is definitely sausage. I think there a piece of tufo.

one tip, move to district 3 its more food and local oriented and more easy calm vibe. District 1 is well tourist and high prices an to busy. its like any se-asian mega city all different districts has different vibes and population. Often changing district is like coming to a new city =) love ur vlogs its being back "home" in hmc where i did live almost 2 years after living and working in bangkok +11 years =)

I personally preferred District 7 over the others in Saigon. I've lived in Phu Nhuan, D9, D2, and D7. My wife's family lives in Tan Binh and D12, so we've also spent many weeks in those districts. Now we live about 40 minutes outside the city, in Binh Duong. It's pretty good here as well. We have a huge 3 story, 4 bedroom, 4 bathroom townhouse out here in villa compound. It's cheaper than our tiny 2 bedroom in D7. About $550 usd per month.

Your comment about navigating the roundabout as a pedestrian reminded me that Saigon is one of the least pedestrian friendly cities in the world. In fact, on the sidewalks that do exist you often have to dodge motorcycles!
@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug 2 ай бұрын
My reaction overall has been a bit different. I've found Saigon to be relatively pedestrian friendly - surprisingly so. Of course, it isn't the same as walking down the empty sidewalks of Canada. But compared to my recent experiences in Kuala Lumpur and in the cities of Sumatra, Saigon has been a pleasant change. Most intersections now have traffic lights with working pedestrian crossings. Crossing those is easy. And unlike in places like Kuala Lumpur there are no major barriers of highways blocking your path. You can plot a walking route for ten kilometers in any direction and walk there without an issue. In KL, I couldn't do that because there was usually a highway system blocking my path forward with no way to cross it. And intersections i KL usually have no pedestrian crossings at all. The roundabout I showed in this video is a bit of an exception in Saigon because the traffic never actually stops, and you have no choice but to wade out into the middle of the scooter flow. But most of the time, I'm crossing at organized intersections with pedestrian-crossing lights that change quickly. Of course, you've got a lot of barriers on the sidewalks that have to be navigated with all the food stalls and parked scooters, AND you get motorcycles driving down the sidewalks often. But I have found it much easier to walk around Saigon than other places I've been recently. 😀

I took a local Bus in june 1969 from CuChi to Saigon while still dressed in my Army uniform,went right thru VC towns an area,I guess they were all sleeping ,I'am pretty sure I'am the only soldiers to ever do this,most soldiers traveled on Army Convoys with weapons and MP escort's.I also met Sean Flynn in Cambodia right before he and two other guys went missing an never found,Cmb odia was still some what dangerous up into the late 80's and early 90's,American's didn't get to go to Vietnam until 1993,I was there in 1994 for 6 weeks.

I wonder if you saw a lot of changes from 1969 to 1994. Or did it feel like roughly the same place? It seems like the economic boom that led to all the modern development I see now didn't happen until the 90s. Perhaps in 1994, it still felt like old, traditional Vietnam.

If you are still in Saigon, tomorrow, May 31, go to Saigon River Park to see the opening ceremony of the river festival. This program does not sell tickets. Ho Chi Minh City River Festival 2nd year. 2024 will open on May 31, with a series of nearly 20 activities and a series of tourism stimulus programs lasting until June 9, 2024.

I had no idea there was a debate about my Grab driver going on in the background. 🤪 It never occurred to me that the driver wasn't a guy. He sure looked like a guy and sounded like a guy to me. But as I've often said, once I turn on my GoPro, my brain power seems to drop by like 80%. Maybe it was a woman and I just never noticed. 😀
