Hey guys, this is Sarah for Alpenwild, and today I am coming to you from the Zurich, Switzerland airport (ZRH). The Zurich airport will be the first stop for many of you on your Swiss vacation with Alpenwild.
Getting out of the airport and off on your adventure is so easy, thanks to Switzerland's amazing rail system. It's fully integrated, making it very easy to go directly from the airport, to the train, onto a bus or a tram, wherever you need to go to get to your final destination.
When you book with Alpenwild, you will receive a Swiss Rail Pass, that grants you access to over 28,000 stations and stops throughout Switzerland.
If you don't have a ticket, it's very easy to pick one up on the go at one of the many ticket machines everywhere. You can also purchase your ticket on the "SBB Mobile" app.
In this video, Sarah continues to explain how to use the Swiss Rail System from the Zurich airport. There are plenty of signs that make train travel very simple in Switzerland.

Thanks for the great video. I will be visiting Zurich in February and I always like to plan visits in great detail. Some stations have trams and s-bahn trains. Which is better for going to the center? Is one cheaper or better than the other? Which is easier to use? And finally, are the tickets bought at the same machine? Thanks.
@Alpenwild
@Alpenwild 4 жыл бұрын
Hello @1121gsm! We're glad you enjoyed the video and that you plan trips in great detail - that certainly makes trips more enjoyable! With regards to your question of which is better, the s-bahn trains or tram, it depends on which forms of transportation come at go at the time and place that you need transportation. The SBB app is a wonderful resource. You simply enter your starting point and destination and the app will generate your transportation options. Both options are comparable in price and both are similarly easy to use. Tickets are typically bought in front of the respective forms of transportation and not on the same machine. Hopefully, that helps!
@Alpenwild
@Alpenwild 4 жыл бұрын
From the airport to the center of Zurich just take any train from Zurich Airport to Zurich HB--most are major Interegion trains that arrive in 9 or 10 minutes. The S-bahn trains often make an intermediate stop at Oerlikon and take a couple minutes longer. The fare is the same. Once you're in Zurich you can do most of what you want to do on foot, but taking local trams can also be helpful--especially if you're not at walker. Also look into the Zurich Card, which incudes transportationi and many other features such as museums, and other discounts.

Hi its a great video, i have a question. What if i miss my connecting train ? Does my ticket expires? Or can i just hop on to the next train and head towards my destination? We are planning to visit Switzerland on May and i am eagerly waiting for your guidance 😄.
@Alpenwild
@Alpenwild 2 жыл бұрын
No worries. Your fare is for point-to-point travel between two locations and can normally be used on any trains on that line. For example, if you purchase a ticket from Zurich to Lausanne and miss the first train, you can take the next one with the same ticket. That ticket would also allow you to get off at any point along the route, and for example have lunch in Bern. It's a great system and easy to learn in a couple days. Be sure to get the SBB app on your phone before you leave, and practice finding timetables and learning how to purchase your tickets.

Looking forward to lots of train travel in spring 2022. How does a person select the correct station - closest to destination hotel as an example in a city with multiple stations?
@Alpenwild
@Alpenwild 2 жыл бұрын
Most cities have a main station served by major rail lines, then outlying areas are supported by local commuter trains, tram or bus service from the main station. You can enter your final destination into the SBB app and it will tell you which tram and bus connections to take.

@Alpenwild
@Alpenwild 5 ай бұрын
The easiest way to see the connections is on the SBB app, which can also store your ticket and your itinerary. But even without the app, they will print your itinerary at the station when you purchase your ticket. You'll also find signage on the platform and on monitors in the station. It can be a bit scarry at first, but by your second trip you're a pro.

@tessacramer9560

Make sure you book your Glacier Express seat reservations 90 days in advance. Seats can sell out in the busy season. Changing trains is simple, but traveling light makes it much easier.
@peldar_
@peldar_ 5 жыл бұрын
Changing is quite easy as they described. The stations are very well labeled with images, so no problem if you dont speak german. Also trains in Switzerland run clockwise. Meaning; every 15, 30 or 60 min there is a train on every route. So if you are afraid to miss a connection, just take a train earlier and wait 30-60 min at the connecting station. This is possible since with your ticket you are free to choose wich train you take and dont need reservations. (Except touristic trains like the glacier express)

Alpenwild oh wonderful! Thank you thank you thank you! For me personally, my wife and I are traveling to the Interlaken area June 2020, so anytime before that would be awesome! I am playing with the app every now and then but there are too many symbols everywhere. I see what the labels say but what do they really mean in practice? I mean, if you could do a sample planned trip from one city to another in Switzerland, and plan it from “this is where I am/will be” and “these are the towns/cities I’d like to visit by train/bus” and “this is how I would plan that trip through the SBB app”, that would be awesome. I am anxious being in a country where I do not speak the language so planning ahead thoroughly how to travel from one point to another would help alleviate some of that anxiety. If you have time and the inclination, I would love it if you could take us on a one-day “this is how we eat breakfast, lunch, dinner here, these are the things you should know, these are words you should know to be polite, this is how to order, this is how to ask for the check, how long does a session typically take (we hear that in France, eating at a restaurant takes a while, for example)”. And then if you could show us the meal/food prices over there, like this is how much a burger costs, how much a slice of pizza costs, etc, that would help us plan mentally and budget-wise. Thank you for all these wonderful videos! I haven’t watched them all yet, but soon will. :)

Hi Sarah I am going to Geneva next winter to visit my friend, however I am flying into Zürich, and I need to take the train to Geneva. My phone tells me it’s fastest to take IC 13 to Zürich HB and then transfer there to IC 5 out to Geneva, but online on the internet, it says IC 1 is faster, as it’s direct and i don’t have to transfer, which is what I’d prefer. What’s your opinion?
@Alpenwild
@Alpenwild 4 жыл бұрын
I'd suggest the direct train--IC1, from Zurich Airport, which arrives Geneva in 3hrs 09min. No change of trains, so you can sit back, relax, and catch up on your sleep.
@Alpenwild
@Alpenwild 4 жыл бұрын
We don't know of any direct trains going from Zurich to Geneva. There is always a transfer ,so the correct way would be to take the IC 13 to Zurich HB then transfer to IC 5 out to Geneva. We would recommend using the SBB Mobile train app since it shows the accurate changes and routes to take.

Can u please help me on a question about the train. I am trying to start planning a trip for next year - if i’m getting the half card but also want to get the “top of europe” card for Jungfraujoch does it matter which one i get? I plan to stay in Lauterbrunnen but it looks like that top of europe pass doesn’t go to interlaken or grindelwald? Also, can I add my bf and I’s card one my phone / app together or does he need to do it himself?
@Alpenwild
@Alpenwild Жыл бұрын
Hi Cheyenne! The Half Fare Card will get you half off on the Top of Europe Card. The top of Europe Card is limited, but if you plan do to all of the excursions, it’s a good value. You can add anyone’s Half Fare Card to your app as long as they were purchased with that login. Let us know if you have any other questions!

@Alpenwild

Rail Europe (www.raileurope.com) is a good place to start if you're planning an extended vacation in Switzerland. For a shorter stay with limited train travel, load the SBB Mobile app and try purchasing point-to-point tickets and daypasses on your phone. With so many options, you need to do a little price comparison based on where you'll be going and how much train travel you expect to do.

Is there space for luggage above the seats in the trains?
@Alpenwild
@Alpenwild Жыл бұрын
The space for luggage above the seats varies from train to train, but all have some overhead space for small pieces like coats or small bags. There is also space for larger pieces under the seats, between the seats, and at the end of each carriage.

Hi, your video is very meticulous. My question is that traveling from Zurich airport to Zurich HBB, there is multiple train via different place. One who booked ticket Zurich airport to hub, can board any of the trains? Is there any train specific train no. mentioned on ticket? After buying train ticket, is it valid for whole day? Thank you. Waiting for you reply.
@Alpenwild
@Alpenwild 5 ай бұрын
Good question. There are four tracks at Zurich Airport, and all trains leaving from tracks 3 and 4 go to Zurich HB (Main station). It's an 11-minute ride. Zurich HB will also show on the sign above the platform. I'd also suggest getting the SBB app on your phone, which shows all the stop an connection for any itinerary. When you buy a train ticket, it's good for the whole day.

hi Can I store my bag somewhere in the TRAIN station in Zurich? I have to make a trip to the apple store before going to my next city and would prefer to save money by dropping off my laptop at Apple in Zurich and then going back to the train station. If you know that =would be awesome

The Zurich Main Station has both luggage lockers and a storage center for longer storage. You can find more information for the luggage lockers at the Zurich station on the SBB website: www.sbb.ch/en/station-services/at-the-station/railway-stations/shopville-zuerich-main-station.html#equipment

Easy peasy. Just leave your bags in one of the lockers at the Zurich train station. They have different sized lockers that can accommodate most all luggage. Then walk a few blocks or take the tram down Bahnhofstrasse to the Apple store at Rennweg 43.

On Swiss trains the conductors discourage you from placing backpacks or luggage in front of you or on the seat next to you because it prevents other passengers from using that space. The luggage compartments at the end of each carriage or the space behind or above each seat normally has room for your luggage without keeping other passengers from taking a seat.
