Things to Know Before Traveling to Japan - About Suica card.
As of March 2024, regular Suica and PASMO cards are still suspended from sale.
Places where you can purchase Welcome Suica are limited.
You can also use mobile Suica and mobile PASMO, but you won't be able to if your smartphone or credit card doesn't support them.
With the method we're introducing this time, you can easily ride the train without a Suica card and without worrying about your IC card balance.

We saved our suica cards from a trip last year. We're going again next year so will only need to top them both up to get moving again

How to ride a train without a SUICA card ? Easy. Buy a ticket. Get a JR Pass. Use a TOICA, ICOCA, KITACA, MANACA etc. etc. 😊

Thank you for this information. One question, we're coming to Japan with only 10.000 yen notes. It's possible to change for lower yen notes in these IC card Machines?

yes. i usually broke a 10k note by topping up my suica card by a small amount. it also works if you are buying individual tickets...do note however that if you pay a lot in cash you will end up with a crazy amount of small change - a lot of which is basically impossible to get rid of without donating it somewhere. you can use 10 yen coins in the ticket machines (or drinks vending machines) - but anything smaller and you're stuck with it. if you can get a suica (or icoca etc) its really useful as you can pay in the konbinis and no messing about with small change. you will of course need cash but try not to use it in the convenience stores etc..

Yep i also used 10k notes to charge 1k notes so i could get smaller bills. Also if you are in a place with claw machines or a lot of gachapon, sometimes there are machines that change larger bills for smaller and coins, some only accept 1-2k notes only and those give you 100 yen coins back.

@dicasderiqueza At the ticket machine, you can't make exchanges, but if you top up only 1000 yen into your IC card, you'll get 9000 yen in change :)

The charge machine at JR Ryogoku Station did not accept my Passmo Passport. Also, Passmo Passport is not accepted at Shonan Monorail.

You should be able to use PASMO Passport at JR charging machines... By the way, since April 2018, you can also use PASMO and Suica on the Shonan Monorail :)

If I am transferring from Shinkansen to local trains, do I use my Shinkansen ticket *and* tap my IC card on the transfer gate, to exit the Shinkansen platforms and register the starting point of my journey on local trains?

this is what im confused about i dont want to pay twice if im using the suica or passmo card, if you are using local and bullett for the same journey is it impossible to overpay if you use the suica or passmo?

I somehow managed to exit the Tokaido Shinkansen gate at Tokyo Station (using my Shinkansen ticket) and make it all the way to a station on the Rinkai Line (via the Yamanote/Osaki) without passing through another gate to “touch in” to the local lines. When I arrived at my destination on the Rinkai line, I couldn’t exit through the station’s gates as I hadn’t “touched in” - hence my question. Maybe I just missed a gate somewhere 😂 Thanks everyone :)

Audio states card balance CAN be refunded, captions state CAN'T. Which is it?

Is it a PASMO passport? The card balance can't be refunded.

The card contains a 500 Yen deposit which is refundable subject to certain conditions. You have to bring the card to its original region of purchase. SUICA cards in the Kanto Tokyo region, TOICA in Chubu Nagoya area, ICOCA in Kansai Osaka area, KITACA in Hokkaido, etc. etc. Furthermore, you can't get the whole 500 Yen back. There is a certain amount to be withheld as a service fee . If I were you, don't bother getting the refund. Just keep your card as a souvenir. .

No. You can even recharge your card at non-JR train stations.

I don’t trust Internet to buy the card online. I don’t trust it so I will wait until I arrive at Haneda airport and I will buy it right at the airport Internet have a lot of scams and I hate that.
