How to rig a rope swing without climbing the tree

This is a foolproof way to hang a rope for a swing, specifically when the rope isn't long enough to be doubled over the limb and you don't feel like climbing the tree or using a ladder. Knots used: double bowlin, double sheet bend and lark's head hitch.

After admitting defeat with the seat belt straps that came in my kit, I found this little gem. Thanks for the great advice. Don't underestimate the size of the bowline knot, especially when your limb is pretty high up in the tree. Distance plays tricks on your eyes. I had to make mine a bit larger.

Excellent tutorial. I like this approach, but I'm still searching for a way to have a "bail out" rope that would allow me to remove the line from the tree if it becomes damaged or starts to fray in the future. I don't like the idea of having a rope permanently affixed to a limb that I won't be able to get to if I ever need to replace the rope. I thought about just having a double rope, with one rope supporting the weight of the swing, and the other essentially just attached loosely to the main rope or the top of the swing. Just not sure how to keep all that from getting twisted up. Engineering stuff like this is fun, and you've given me some ideas for things to try.

This was a big help. How do you remove it from the tree though? Is there a trick?
@scotathon
@scotathon 2 ай бұрын
I don’t think there is anyway to remove it. I have done something similar to this but put the loop in the middle of the rope, that way you can pull down on one of the two ends to pull the loop back down.

This is so complicated, but I like it cus it looks like a very safe way to do the tree swing, but idk if im following straight, I keep having to stop and go back to try figuring out how exactly this is all being done and the finish product from it all, and if it's what I need. I have all the rope to do it enough, but I'm just not sure if it'd be easier to just climb the dang giant tree ime working with here. You definitely need a tripod of some any sorts though cus that view is making it seem too busy, I think it's why I'm feeling confused acually.

Absolutely brilliant. I’ll have to find somebody with a really good arm to throw the rope over but this knotting technique is awesome! Will it loosen as the tree grows? I think I killed a branch by putting too tight of a knot on it.

So is it difficult to throw up the static line first? And then tie a serious slipknot or something, pull it all the way up and pull it tight? Is that not doable? If there's enough tension it shouldn't rub back and forth.

I like the double bowline morphed hitch too. I learned from "whyknot" channel about the "swing hitch" and its pretty sick too. Kinda like a double constrictor knot but with a hitch. I wanna send you a video of a rope swing i made that you let go of, into a lake. Its borderline illegal. easily 50+ ' drop. I know youd appreciate the setup and if you are in NC, itll be worth your visit

He called it a static cord, meaning it didn't stretch like the rope he used to pull the whole thing up into tree. You don't want your swing rope to be stretchy. You want it to be static.

The over complicated way to do it. Just get rope that is twice as long as what you need tie a weight to one end throw it up over the limb pull it down and tie a loop in one end put the other end through then pull the loop goes up and cut to length after the loop is up on the limb. You don't need all those ropes...just one rope.
