Sometimes in the small tributaries I go 8-6lb test and my setup is a little different I use float line tied to a 10lb leader with my float and sinkers then I have a barrel swivel with a 1ft 8-6lb test leader with either bead or spawn bag or jig and have no split shot on last leader

What's your opinion on Palomar knot vs improved clinch
@strikeforcek9149
@strikeforcek9149 6 жыл бұрын
Martin Pêcheur - I'm not sure about Dave's opinion, but I have some input: The Palomar Knot has been proven to hold much better than most all other knots, it's stronger than most every over knot, and cutting into itself is almost non-existent when correctly tied, and its one of the only knots to retain the stock breaking strength of the testline without the knot failing/breaking. BUT, this is all contingent on the fact that the knot is tied, prepped, and tightened CORRECTLY. So, these steps are imperative when using a Palomar Knot: 1- ALWAYS wet down the knot very well before clinching it down. This is half of eliminating the cutting into itself. 2- Do not clinch it down unevenly. Ie- don't use JUST the tag end or JUST the main line to pull tension into the knot. You MUST get the knot semi tight into itself by gently using your fingers and putting slight pressure on both the tagline and the main line evenly. THEN, when the knot seems semi tight on itself, SOAK THE KNOT AGAIN WITH WATER/SALIVA, and pull the tagline AND the mainline EVENLY with hard and equalized pressure to tighten completely. If these particulars are adhered to on the Palomar Knot, it will NEVER fail unless knicked, cut, or scraped over and over (Just like any other line). Now, the improved clinch knot, AKA: new era fisherman's knot, is JUST AS reliable and has ALMOST the same tensile strength as the Palomar Knot. The only difference, is that the improved clinch knot is more risky in the fact that you have to take much more care to make sure the line doesn't cut into itself. On an improved clinch knot, it is VERY easy for the line to accidentally cut into itself, because there's more points of friction. But, if tied correctly, it can be basically just as good as a Palomar Knot with only fractional difference in breaking strength. Typically, as long as you haven't frictioned your line into itself, most any knot is going to outlast the tensile strength of the line itself. The line often times stetches and fails, due to unavoidable factory weaknesses which all tests have, rather than the knot itself breaking or failing. Out of the past 25yrs of fishing, I have yet to be let down by a Palomar Knot. I live off of Lake Erie in "Walleye Central", and in the center of the famous "Steelhead alley" (Cleveland area) and I have NEVER had a Palomar Knot fail me. :)

OSP K9 great info.thank you. Is there a difference I strength for braided line vs mono
@strikeforcek9149
@strikeforcek9149 6 жыл бұрын
Martin Pêcheur - Typically, braided line lasts a lot longer sue to its abrasion resistance, BUT it is also a lot more visible in the water, it absorbs water and returns water to your eyelets more frequently (so icing up eyelets may be an issue in cold weather 40deg an under). Mono floats, is semi visible in the water, and typically has less abrasion resistance but a little more "stretchability" than braid, leaving for a little more play needed on your drag. FLOUROCARBON is made with zero micro bubbles in it (mono and flouro are the same material usually, it's just that flouro carbon has no bubbles and is a 100% solid line and mono has micro bubbles throughout it and is semi solid). So, flouro sinks and mono doesn't. Flouro doesn't retract light and it absorbs it (making it less visible underwater than mono) whereas mono's microbubbles in the line cause buoyancy within the line which is why mono sits on top of the water, the microbubbles also play a role in mono as to why light retracts off and through it more easily too making it visible when underwater. So, what I typically do, is run flouro carbon through and through, anytime I'm fishing for steelhead (any trout) and crappie. Otherwise, I run braided line with flouro carbon leaders. Some of my friends run nano-braided lines for trout with flouro carbon leaders, and they do just as good as well. I just personally prefer flouro for the visibility and sinkability peace of mind, hehe. Ultimately, it just comes down to buying quality line and trying to avoid the cheaply manufactured stuff, and personal preference. But, if you're paranoid about strength and abrasion, you can go with a nano-braided line and just ruin a decent length of flouro leader like Dave does, and if its cold out just be sure to de-ice your eyelets often and check your reel often to make sure it's not icing up while on the reel. To avoid this you can use Pam Original non stick cooking spray on your line or use thick generous amounts of unscented chapstick on your eyelets to help reduce water icing the eyelets. OR, just run decent 6 to 8lb flouro and feather your drag real nicely and you'll just have a linger fight with the fish until you tire him out and can pull him in after he's exhausted (a lot of fun, and it makes you feel like a pro of sorts, haha). Hope this helps.
