How to Rig Wacky Worms for More Hookups

The wacky rig is one of the most effective bass catching presentations. It can be rigged weightless, weighted, fished on a drop shot and even a jig head, but single hook rigging remains the most popular. A lot of anglers slide an o-ring onto the center of a stick worm to reduce tearing the plastic or having fish throw the entire worm. This is important, but a single o-ring has the tendency to push the hook flat against the worm, reducing hook ups. Adding two o-rings and crossing them, with the hook underneath both has the effect of keeping the hook in an upright position where it's more likely to hook the fish.

I just did this and caught 2 smallies, and my 2 buddies using different rigs caught 1 between the 2 of them. I didn't have the o-ring tool, so I made one. I took a sharpie pen cap, snipped the pocket holder thing off with wire cutters and used a knife to smooth it. I pushed a 5/16 inch o-ring onto the cap from the small rounded end (little spit helps it slide on). I stuck 1/2 of the plastic worm into the cap's hole, where the sharpie pen tip would go, and slid the o-ring onto the worm. Easy. BTW, I did this with grubs too, and that's what I caught my fish on.

I haven't done a whole lot of plastic worm fishing but I found a great way to wacky rig with a perpendicular hook (like you did with two o-rings) is to cut a small piece of heat shrink tubing that will easily glide over the worm, then heat it quickly with a lighter or heat gun after its in position. There were a couple of videos on KZfaq demonstrating this method. Now you have a tough rubber ring to run your hook through and you don't need to worry about it tearing off your worm!

Double O ring defintely helps to prolong a senko life and keep the hood pendicular but the O ring itself may often cut into the worm. Heat shrink tubing could be a better choice.

Does this work on medium light spinning rods as well?
@Wired2Fish
@Wired2Fish 8 жыл бұрын
+Ethan Yang You bet, a medium light can work great with small to medium sized stick baits. It may be a bit under gunned for big stick baits though, where a medium power rod would be favored. I'd fish using a braid mainline (no stretch) to help penetrate hooks with a lighter rod. Then maybe a 2-4 foot leader of fluorocarbon to monofilament if you think the fish are line shy. -Ryan

How do you keep yama senkos from tearing using two o rings? maybe the brand of orings you use are softer?
@Wired2Fish
@Wired2Fish 7 жыл бұрын
Mark was just using standard o rings in this video, but was fishing the Senko on a medium light power rod with good flex. The blank absorbed much of the shock from casting, and he didn't have the problem of cutting the worm.

Don't you find that two o-rings makes the senko tear easier than with only one? Maybe I'm casting too hard but I'm splitting my real senkos after 7-10 casts with your method.
@Wired2Fish
@Wired2Fish 8 жыл бұрын
+Reed DeMarco Hi Reed, Mark Courts (host of this video) didn't have this issue, and I haven't had it personally either. Wondering if your o-ring is too small, or as you mention, maybe casting too hard? If the problem persists, electrical heat shrink tubing cut wider spreads the stress out over a larger area of the worm. You can see what I'm referring to in this video: www.scout.com/outdoors/wired2fish/story/1614992-neko-rigging-tips-and-tricks

Hello: I was told to use a weighted hook. What do I know I don't even own a boat, but I did stay at a motel 6, 14 years ago. I am going to wrap bright red or yellow sewing thread around my hook and worm and coat the thread with clear finger nail polish. Thats the way I put a guide back on a fishing rod when I was 12 years old. I never had a person to help me do things like that when I was a kid so I did everything on my own. I think the red or yellow thread will give the worm more flash than the o rings.

I stopped using O-rings completely for a time, and the fishing was great, but the loss of worms was constant. Now I tie on with 150 pound test trotline. I tie two loops around the worm, cross them, and slide under both like you do. I got tired of buying O-rings. The spool of trotline I have should last about two hundred years, and I'm catching bass just as well as with the O-rings. It still needs more water time before I can say it's permanent, and a friend of mine has another method that he says works better than the O-rings, as far as protecting the bait goes. I'll probably try that, as well. The truth is probably that I just like experimenting. Sometimes an experiment works wonderfully, and sometimes it fails miserably, but all are fun, and I've caught bass with some homemade lures, as well as with random objects that I rigged with hook and decorated with whatever was at hand.
