Thank you for the video. Technically the process you followed was a roll, but wouldn't it make more sense to use the actual "roll" feature on the options page? It would potentially require less capital as the closeout fee and the premium from the new covered call would all be processed in one transaction. Could be useful to know for traders who may not have the cash available to buy back their current position before receiving the premium for the new covered call. Hope that makes sense!
@ThinkMoneyBenny

that makes sense, but I personally haven't used the roll feature. I've only rolled manually.

Thanks - I've been selling cc for a while, and now learning how to roll some that are getting close to the strike price that I'd rather not give up just yet. Your video popped up first in a search. It's 3 years old, so perhaps Fidelity has changed, but on the cc there is the option to roll. My question is, if one part of the leg doesn't execute, will the other? It seems I don't need any cash to put the order in because the new premium will take care of it. You're right - it takes time and a lot of learning work to get to this point in investing. Thanks. PS I wonder how you ultimately handled the massive drop in BYND.

One important thing you covered which I couldn't find anywhere as I was scouring for that info ... 1) You have 100 Stocks and you want to sell Covered Calls 2) You "Sell to Open" on Strike Price (more than your cost basis) and 3) When you are ready to collect your money, you "Buy to Close" ----- Nobody appears to think of that end part which I think can throw a lot of people off. IMHO. So Thank you!

I watched the video just trying to get an answer on whether Fidelity allowed a roll with a single transaction as some brokers do. It seems like that is not the case, you have to buy to close and sell to open again. So thanks for confirming that. Side note - it is NOT a cardinal sin to write a call below your cost basis unless you have some specific reason why a realized loss is a problem (like perhaps a wash sale issue). That is a prime example of the "sunk cost fallacy." Once you buy a stock, the cost basis should be nearly irrelevant to your decision-making other than as it impacts taxes. When you sell a covered call, you are weighing the benefit of pocketing the profit versus the various downsides to having the underlying stock tank or skyrocket. The fact that the strike price is above or below the cost basis should make no difference. This can be a tough thing for many people to get. Literally the moment after you buy a stock, the price you bought it at doesn't matter other than for taxes. All that matters is that you make decisions about selling or buying more or doing options based on the situation when you make those decisions, not base don what you bought it for. Failing to make decisions like this is the number one reason why people lose more money than necessary when a stock goes down.
@ThinkMoneyBenny
@ThinkMoneyBenny 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the insight. Fidelity does have an option to roll with a single transaction, they have a menu for that. However I prefer to go about it this way manually, it’s easier for me to understand.

When you want to buy back your option how do you select the price to buy it back of all the bids and ask prices listed in the option chain. Could you do a video expanding on this specially the mechanics of it. If you help me with this I will start selling covered calls but I still dont know how to buy my option back. Thanks Benny.

thanks for the feedback frank. i recommend you just jumping into selling your first covered call. you will learn a lot just by doing it. when I did my first one I did not know all the answers, but there's no better teacher than experience. pick a stock you own 100 shares of and sell a covered call at a strike price you would be comfortable selling them for. your exit strategy will be to either let the contract expire worthless, or you will buy it back for less than what you sold it for, before expiration. Just try it

hey Mel, it's really entirely up to you. with strike prices, you can pay attention to key levels of support and resistance if you want to get technical, other times I choose strike prices I'm comfortable with. there is no right or wrong date, it just depends on how long you want to be in the contract. I like to do weekly's with bynd bc the stock is crazy. but other stocks I can do 3-4 weeks.

Hi Benny. Thanks for making this video! I'm new to covered calls and I have a question. What platform do you use to research call prices and decide if it's worth rolling? I find that checking call prices takes me a very long time. There's also a risk that you won't be able to sell your new call, correct? I put one in a couple days ago and it sat for 5-6 hours before finally going through. Thanks again.

Whats up man, thanks for tuning in. I use Fidelity to place all my trades, but I do use Robinhood to look at the prices in the options chain. It’s faster & easier. Fidelity has a "roll" button which of course it better than buying to close and then selling to open, since you might end up with a closed position and unfilled on the new position, but it's rather opaque in terms of setting a limit price. You can't just look at the .50-.55 bid/ask of the desired new sell to open and set a limit on that, executing the whole thing if the limit price is met. Instead, there's this bizarre "net credit" thing that represents the difference between the ask price of your first leg (I don't understand what the bid/ask of the first leg even represents BTW) and the bid price of the new contract you're considering. Can anyone explain WTF I'm looking at and how to adjust the net credit number so that the limit price for the new contract falls on the desired value of the new contract's bid/ask spread?

this video is misleading because he bought back the call at $140 @$4.45 not $144 @$6. At least that's what the video shows.

you select “buy to close” under action.. and you buy back the contract. hopefully it’s less than what you sold it for so you can collect the difference.

Couldn't you sell covered calls buy buying a call that gives you control of 100 shares? That's another way to grow your account too
