Your method is simple but can damage your cord in the long run....thanks.

When I was a child, I was taught to coil sailboat lines this way. However, as an adult who’s been using these hands in a trade for 40 yrs , I find it too difficult to twist heavy duty extension cords this way, but I still use this method for lightweight ropes and lines.

Got out the 100 ft'er and like you said, rolled it up and maid the tie around and through . Thanks Jay! Oh, I also am going to buy it off the 12/2 w/ground roll next time I need a new one and add on my choice of plugs, thanks again Jay.

Pulling on that kink at the end of your wrap is damaging the cord. Keep it loose and use a tie or strap and then hang. Tight bends and kinks is what damages the cable over time. DO NOT DO THE LAST STEP.

even though there is other methods I find this works best for me. My dad taught me this method in the 70's, easy to do but try and show someone and they never get it....lol That last loop I just take the end cord for the wrap around. What I like is with the long cords I can give them a good toss like throwing a horse shoe and 9 times out of 10 it flows out pretty good. Thanks for this vid.

All of y9our examples will result in loops and kinks in the ropes, extension cords and hoses. Anyone that tries your technique should hold on to the last and and throw the rest out in front of them and you will see the loops and kinks.

Nice video ! I learned some nice rope or cord craft! Thankyou ..BUT, I don't need to go to that trouble to get perfect cord coils. I have been a tradesman for a long time, I have seen all the methods [except this one] Doing thousands of square meters of concrete floor grinding year after year, you soon learn what works out on the site. In the garage, well............it's pretty tiny in scale. you can easily get perfect coils by hand, but you get memory when OTHERS wind your coils. Unless you both are left or right handed, and start at the same plug end, if someone else winds up your lead from the opposite end that you do,, , BANG, you will have an ugly messy pattern. As the copper inside stays permanently bent [memory]. I do free hand coils starting at the wall plug end, I get them ALL exactly the same and PERFECT, use a 2ft cloth tie at the plug end, so when you have the lead all wound up, you tie the cloth strip or similar material, around to keep it all together,.

Oh my God. This guy actually made a video on how to properly hang up a rope but yet he still did it completely wrong. After he put them into a big oval he should have just hung it up like that. But no he wants to put it in an oval wrap the wire around it tight and pull it through and have it hanging by one of the many wires. As soon as he puts it up on the hook from the weight of the cord it's going to Bend and stretch the cable inside because it's going to be taking a 180 degree Bend around the hook. Which already put strain on the wires inside the cord and will cause them to short out from ripping apart let alone the wait that it is supporting. I swear. This guy has got a lot to learn. You never pull tight on chords with any type of cable in them. Well let me say as long as it's not taking more than a 140 degree Bend then you would be fine

Gary, I turned 70 this year and have replaced two cords in my life time, because they were cheep cords. I grant you it puts a strain on the wire but when you are trying to hang cords in the truck or construction trailer and get them to the work area I can't bugger around with cords coming loose and entangling in other cords. I shared my methods, please do a video on what you like to do. There a many methods.

This is NOT (KNOT) the way to roll up an extension cord. Oh sure it 'looks' pretty sitting in storage. But try unravelling it to use it (without a hassle),- it will be a twisted, knotted 'mess'!! ... The 'correct' way is called 'over under'. look it up.

you are already doing the extension cord wrong. Use the braided method. It will hang much better and not tangle as much as coiled one will. Check here in KZfaq about braided extent ion cords. It is really easy.

Nice methods, thanks. Are not climbers filing the rope in two before making the coils?

You say you buy your cable for your extension cords in bulk and affix your own ends because it is supple and flexible. I like the idea because many extension cords i have bought claim to be a certain gauge and seem sturdy but end up being a much thinner wire that is surrounded by a plastic-like core sheathed in a thick flexible rubber-like casing that gives the cord the appearance of a thick robust cord that one would think contained heavy gauge wires only to find its nothing more than a cheap cord wrapped in similar material as a high end cord with a higher price tag. What type of wire do you suggest for making extension cords and what gauge wire capable of high load applications (such as powering you RV) with minimum resistance?

For regular purpose cords around the shop that you would use to run a grinder, electric drill, jig saw and other small hand tools you can use 14/2 cord. For an RV cord you would want 10/2 cord, remember the lower the number the heavier the wire and the least resistance. These cords have a black, white, and a copper ground wire. Make sure the outer coating is rubber and not plastic. Plastic will not coil when cold and tends to keep bends and twists for ever. I buy my cord at an electrical supply store. They tend to stock higher quality contractor grade cord. Buy quality plug ends and they will last forever. It is a pleasure when you have a flexible quality cord to work with. When you make your own cords they can be custom cut to meet your particular needs. One hint is to make 3 or 4 6 foot cords, these are great for bench cords where that is all you need and keeps the work area uncluttered. A rule of thumb when making shop cords is measure from the wall plugs to the center of your garage/shop, add 5-10 feet and that's a cord length that is a perfect length for the work shop. You may want to make 2-3 cords of this length. Your comment was great and will help others with the same questions. Good luck Ray
