Your video is what helped this Spanish student to finally roll her r’s. I thought it was hopeless but after a month of tada, tada, tada whenever I was alone, I finally succeeded. From the bottom of my heart, mil gracias. ❤️😊

Native Spanish speaker friends of mine suggested is practice rolling my “r”s by saying “ferrocarril” (rail road). I repeated that word over and over for days to get it right. In Italian it is “strada ferrata.” Just another suggestion. Ciao, Bob.

I've been doing the t-d for a long time, already knowing of the trick. I've also been trying alveolar flaps, which are very easy for me to do. I have learned to do bilabial trills, velar, and uvular trills in the process of trying to learn the alveolar trill. I have learned literally every single other pulmonic consonant in the IPA alphabet, but I just still cannot seem to do the alveolar trill. I can do a breathy voiced velar trill while adding ventricular fold distortion and simultaneously doing a bilabial trill. Even so I just cannot get the alveolar trill for some reason.

This is great! The t/d trick is brilliant - i can already roll after a t, eg tre. But i can't get it after a vowel, eg burro. I am trying bu-td-ro but it sounds with far too much t. Any idea for exercises to get into the trill without too much t sound?

I could never roll my R's. After following your suggestion and practicing for about 5minutes I can get a very crude "roll". I definitely need more practice, but I've already doing so much better than I've ever done.

you might actually be one of the few ones who have realized that the intravocalic Italian 'r' is the American flap T. Good news, though, if you come live in Rome, you're only mostly going to have to use the flap t/Italian R sound. I, for instance, have some serious problems doing the hard R sound. :D In Rome, we reduce most of the R sounds to the flap t's. :D It's a slang thing, but can come in handy :D The Spanish R is even harder. In Italian we don't have that sound. And I can only imagine... if the regular Italian double R sound is hard enough, the Spanish one's gonna be impossible :D

I didn't know that about Rome, that must come in handy! I'm learning Spanish at the moment and I'm finding that it actually helps me pronounce the Italian R better - after trying to do the hard one in Spanish, it's feels a bit easier to do the softer one in Italian :)

How long does it take with the td sound
@joyoflanguages.italian

Hi Connor, that depends, it took me quite a while because it's a case of getting your mouth muscles used to a new sound. Keep coming back to it little and often over a few days/weeks and you'll get there!

The "t-d" thing is interesting! You can actually see this happen accidentally in an episode of Brooklyn 99, where Andy Samberg says "What'd I miss?!" and he rolls the "t'd" part and then does it a couple more times. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gK1kdLmE09qpdac.html
