When lowering the board, your hand is so close to the router bit. Is there any other technique which is more safer? Also, it you are doing this with very hardwood lick Hichory or Jatoba, is there a chance of kick back when you are lower on to the blade?

You are right to realise that this is a potentially risky technique. But the risks are minimised by two very important factors. 1. Take VERY shallow cuts, just 1 or 2 millimeters at a time. Yes, that makes it time-consuming. 2. Make sure that the two stop boards are well clamped. The one nearest me is the most critical. But together the two give me a very controlled cut.

Thank you Steve, for this clear and simple guide to “dropping on”. It’s a technique I’ve never tried. Last time I had to cut a stopped groove, I drilled either end first, which didn’t give the prettiest results. Any recommendations on cutters to use, or importantly, not to use.

That one is a bog-standard 2-flute straight cutter. An up-cut spiral bit will give better waste clearance, but they are a lot more expensive, I think. Don't use a down-cut spiral bit as it will just pack the waste down even harder. Remember that an up-cut bit will actuall pull the waste downwards because the router is upside down.

Steve, I have watched every video you have made on KZfaq. And I must say that I have enjoyed everyone; and they have taught me many things that I had never known. You have ideas that are absolutely brilliant. But this video scares me badly kind Sir. I just feel it is too dangerous. Since the day that plunging routers came into being, I feel that is the way to make the type of grooves you did with a major safety margin. Of course edge "stopping", Is much less dangerous in most cases and your cutting on the edge would be quite safe when cutting them. I mean no disrespect Steve. I am just saying what I feel. Thanks for all you have shared with us for a long time. I look forward for every video you make.

It is a recognised technique, but not for the faint-hearted. I would not recommend it for beginners, that's why I've labeled it "Tricky" and "Advanced". If you don't feel safe doing it, don't do it. But by using stops as I demonstrate and using small - VERY small - cuts, the risks are minimised.

Hi Steve. What do you think of the idea of drilling an undersized through hole at the start end of the slot? Do you think that the initial cut would be more stable - particularly if the cutter does not cut across it's centre. Regards

I've not heard of doing that before, but I can see where you are coming from. I'd have to try it before I could answer you though.

In the slot cutting drop on process, I prefer to lift off with the cutter running rather than risk reduced grip and reaching for the off switch.

There's nothing wrong with that, Bob, but I'm always concerned that I'll damage it trying to lift it up! Each to his own eh?

@@SteveMaskery Absolutely Steve. The best by far is to evolve a technique we are each comfortable with rather than faithfully copying one method.
