Do you want consistent trumpet chops? The try not to obliterate your chops! Look, I get it, we all overdo it from time to time, but when you do you have to rest! Otherwise you’ll create problems and you’ll simply get weaker and worse.

As of today I have played trumpet every single day for the past 740 days. I agree that I should probably take a day off, but I would be so mad that I broke a 2+ year streak, so I just can't do it. I have found though that when I play 1-2 hours everyday I get tired really often and have more bad days and feel like resting, but when I play 2.5-4 hours every day I get tired at the end of the day but play amazingly the next day no matter how many days I do it in a row. Underworking is just as bad as overworking. I think the important thing is not necessarily having off days all the time, but rather maintaining a consistent routine that keeps you just outside of your comfort zone in a way that doesn't kill your chops but isn't so easy as to spoil them either. In other words, I think you're right and I wanted to warn others not to overdo the idea of not overdoing it.

High school band does not care, finally got rest from thanksgiving break, came back yesterday feeling awesome, and by today I’m already fatigued from rehearsal yesterday for my schools winter prism, and I still got 2 days to go

Yeah but most high school bands aren’t “destroying” your chops

Just cool down for sometime if you really wanna rest.

The smaller the muscle the faster the recovery. If you don’t feel sore the day after there should be no issue playing

People can get away with playing every day for years and years. Rest days are not essential because the “weight lifting” analogy is not really analogous to playing the trumpet. but if you find that you perform better with a rest day every week or month then you should do it.

Hey jesse, i had a question, right now I am using a jean paul 330 that I bought two yrs ago in 6th grade, but the slides and valves are slow and deteriorating so I am thinking of getting a new trumpet. I'm gonna start 8th grade soon and I know I will play through high school and possibly in clubs or sparsely after in college (not going to be a musician). I definitely want to get something high quality, and even though I looked on websites like Sam Ash where a bach 180S37 can go down from 4,900 ish to 2,900, I'm not sure if I wanna invest that much and make my parents have to pay that much. Do you have any tips for buying or financing, or other trumpets that would suit me? (For reference, I am 1st chair in my school and was 2nd amongst only kids a year above in the Virginia all-district band ensemble, if you are familiar with that.) I do also prefer the look of silver plated trumpets

hey went from playing lacquered for pretty much my whole middle school and high school until I got a silver strad in like the last month of school which I still use for gigs and and I gotta say it's not a big deal I mean it's really cool looking at the silver for like a week but them you get used to it and realize you have to polish it like every 3 days to keep it looking good 🙃 as for a trumpet deffinently have patience my strad I only paid 400 but I did get it from and sort of clueless friend that didn't understand he could have been getting at least 5 time what I gave him. but yeah just keep your eyes open on the offer up and I'm sure u can eventually find something you like for 500 or under.

@@anthony.rt. Hmm. I agree. I think I'll stick with what I have. I'll try some things to make my valves a lil less sticky. Thanks for the advice! 👍

Give your trumpet a bath. If that doesn’t work, take it to a repair shop. If the quote to fix is more than 50 bucks, look for a good used horn on eBay or Facebook marketplace.
