HW and the Sooze discuss the "headroom trick" on the Kemper. Having trouble running your pedalboard into a Kemper? Do you feel like the Kemper doesn't take drives quite like an amp? Try the Headroom trick, take a dirty profile and clean it up with the gain knob to improve the headroom and increase the dynamic range.

Try changing the title of this video. I actually wanted to know how to connect a pedalboard to a Kemper and found this video (which did not actually even cover that topic)

found the answer, direct output/send and return input is the effects loop at the back of the kemper.

Great video and explanation! Is there any way you could explain the proper way to route delays/reverbs through the Kemper through the FX loop channel? I still haven't figured it out. Thanks!

Great vid guys! I'm not sure who it was but somebody on the forum said that increasing the power sagging in the amp section helps with pedals. As a person who uses high gain pedals regually, I can say that doing this definitely yields a difference in sound, feel, and reactivity! Cheers!

This seems great for someone like myself that uses a gain pedal that cleans up good when the volume knob is lowered.

Excited to try this. The volume headroom is the biggest “problem” for me - using a gainier profile sounds better with a pedal but then there is nowhere to go for dynamics or volume changes in a song - looks like this may fix it!

Wow this works, thanks! You’re right - maybe not a large difference in sound between the 2 methods but significant improvement in feel to me. That abundance of unwanted compression is reduced for sure.

I tried this live, it worked well for my dirty tones and created more headroom for the od pedals but now the clean tone sounds funny without any drive pedal in front of it. It felt very thin. I think I'll have to use the EQ more and not just the definition control next time to compensate.

I feel like this is basically the same principle that you would use to set up an amp to run with pedals vs just using amp gain. You have to leave room for your pedals to work.

Did you simply reduce gain on a gainy profile? That’s it? I heard some clarity I think. I think I liked it but 🤔 what’s still in the profile that when simply reducing gain and adding an outboard gain pedal?

Is it better to use the 'headroom trick' profile or the regular clean profile for the parts without pedals? do you switch back and forth between profiles depending on if the part calls for pedals in front?

Hey guys, thanks for sharing this video. Where do you connect your pedal board? In the front of the Kemper? In the fax loop? The fx loop asks “what pedal are you using” (delay/overdrive/etc). If so, which one do you choose for a pedal board with both delay and overdrive? Thanks in advance :)

Why not take a profile that has less gain from the beginning and boosting that with a pedal?

Nathan Sousa ??? Take a clean profile and stick a dirt or fuzz in front of it. Turn the pedal off when you want clean.
@ToneJunkieTV
@ToneJunkieTV 5 жыл бұрын
stefan914 I Think we talked about that in the video. It certainly works but some people feel there is t the same headroom as with an amp when the profiles are set very clean. This is the headroom trick. It certainly works both ways but some people back the gain off a grainier profile and like the results more.

@ToneJunkieTV

Mark Jackson I’m not trying to confuse anyone. Of course you can take a clean profile and run pedals into it. We all do that. Some people however say they like the fee of dirtier profiles cleaned up when running pedals. I didn’t invent this. If been talked about in a bunch of Kemper groups. It’s just an option.

this really isn't a how to for running your pedal board through the kemper.. It's more of a how to decrease your gain slightly to improve the tone when playing a pedalboard through the Kemper. So, am I to assume, running the pedalboard through the kemper is as easy as plugging the output from your chain directly into kemper's input?
@dubnessIII
@dubnessIII 2 жыл бұрын
Correct. If you wanted to, you could run your modulation effects (or the entire pedalboard) through the effects loop in the back. In my experience, I feel like the kemper does best with pedals in front of it instead of in the effects loop.

This isn't a "trick." Anyone who owns a Kemper should know how the gain knob works on an amp. If the amp is too crunchy, back off. How is this not 100% intuitive? The next Kemper trick: "If you turn up the master volume, it gets louder!"
@ToneJunkieTV
@ToneJunkieTV 5 жыл бұрын
Dartheomus I’m not sure if you paid attention but we comparing two profiles that both have a gain value of “1.8”. They both have the same gain value but one has more dynamic range and feels less compressed because one is a dirtier Profile we cleaned up and the other is a profile of a clean amp. Same amount of gain but different feel. I’m not sure how you would do that on a tube amp.
@Dartheomus
@Dartheomus 5 жыл бұрын
@@ToneJunkieTV Thank you for the clarification. In a normal tube amp, this would be basically the same as running the amp on the crunchy side and then use a volume pedal to dial it back. I agree with you that you want the kemper to start with a crunchy profile, because otherwise it won't know how the amp would break up. You're definitely correct there. I just took it for granted that people would know that, but it's good to clarify in case they don't. It might have been a good thing to explain this at the beginning of the video. I just got triggered on the word trick. =P
