Barefoot-running expert Ben Le Vesconte talks to Adharanand Finn, author of Running With the Kenyans, and fellow keen runner Kate Carter at the VivoBarefoot Clinic in Farringdon, central London. After analysing their current running techniques, Ben teaches them the basics of barefoot running, giving them simple exercises to help change their rhythm, posture and overall style.

Hmmm i went sprinting on flatter speed shoes first and vibram vife vingers v-run. A little barefoot on the treadmill too. Sprinting also gets you to stop heel striking, that causes knee pain because the joint becomes the shock absorber instead of the front foot that naturally bends. However... first time barefoot on the streets i did 5k., blood blister and 2 chaffed little toes bleeding. The social shunning is actually funny. I didnt care at all how i got looked at lol. But its clear that i need more blisters.... And more over... lots of strength in the calves still needs to be developed.

Also before running on minimalist shoes or barefoot, i unlearned overpronating and heelstriking after 100’s of km’s. 70 % of runners over pronates... so its normal ! Just get stability shoes ! Heel strike ? Just get cushioned shoes and transfer the shock to the joints ! Over pronating is NOT normal, ive unlearned it after a long time, but i had to if i wanted to go for long distances. Saying its normal is like saying: Hey! 70% of office workers have a wrong posture and slouch... so its normal ! Just get a posture correction belt on your back and shoulders ! We should Sit straight Walk straight Run straight

For anyone who is turned off from barefoot running solely from fear of cutting your skin, there are barefoot/minimalist shoes that allow you to run as if barefoot but give you a thin, puncture resistant sole to protect from rocks, sticks, and glass. VivoBarefoot and Soft Star Shoes are two examples.

I live in a village of about 1200 habitants, it's like a really green village. There is a road with like, grass in the middle and just bare yellowish dirt on right and left. It litteraly leads to nowhere and ends at about 7 km away from village. On the sides there are fields and crops of corn, cherrys, blueberries, grain and so on. It's just beatiful, I used to run there barefoot before I moved to Italy. That was in south Serbia btw and I was 12-13 year old at the time (now I am 15).

If anyone is interested in seeing how their feet hits the ground and exactly how much of the foot is in contact with it, walk through a puddle deep enough to wet the entire sole of the foot, then walk on a dry spot. Then look at it and even take a picture. The wet footprint(s) indicate exactly how much of the foot is actually in contact with the ground. And if you'd like to see the shape, walk through some soft mud. Soft enough to leave the entire impression including the entire arch and the curled space between the end of your toes and the rest of the foot. you can get 2 different types of footprints. One while standing still. Then just walk through the mud with your normal walk. You can even do one at a run. And if you would like to, you can mix some plaster of Paris and make some molds of the impressions for you to take back to study how the sole of your feet interact with the ground.

Why is this rhythm of 180 specified? Surely the cadence is dependent on leg length, otherwise you're saying that short legged people cannot run fast, because if the cadence has to be 180, the only way to run faster is to lengthen the stride to an unnatural length.

It sounds like your still heel striking, and by that I mean leading your foot impact with your heel instead of landing on the portion right behind the toes first. Try running on a treadmill without letting your heels touch it until most of your foot is planted first that way your not slapping your toes off of it. Your heels should just barely kiss right before the next foot is planting, kind of like your jumping using only your feet and ankles, and your knees and hips will only be pushing you forward.

I don't think that barefoot is the only way to run well, but it is a lot easier (in my opinion) to learn to run well barefoot. After doing a lot of barefoot running, I can go back to a normal running shoe and feel great, but before I tried barefoot, running was torture. So again, it's not the only way to run, but it IS a really great and intuitive way to learn to run well.

+Naresh Kundwani Hi I've just finished my transition to barefoot runners. The trick to it is to start out slow, and then you will gradually build up to the pace you were at before transitioning. Other tips and tricks can include shorting your stride so that it's easy to land on the forefoot, you will also find that this increases your cadence and that your much lighter on your feet. I hope this helps!!!!

A zero drop shoe works well to start. Going barefoot makes you change your strike because the pain tells your body that something is wrong so it should naturally adjust. But ease into running barefoot, your body needs to adjust. I like to warm up with a couple jumps and then running in place. This gets you light on your feet and more "bouncy" which is how you should be running. Running in place + forward motion = Running

Steve Smith I've been using Vivobarefoots for a while, with the insoles in. When I took the insoles out, the ground-feel was obviously much better, but then the extra vertical space meant that my feet slipped around unless I had them tied uncomfortably tight (which didn't happen with the insoles in). Do Merrell gloves have this problem? Thanks. Before the Vivobarefoots I used Fivefingers, which have no insole to start with, and I never had a problem with my feet slipping around.

Ahrraminh I've run in the merrells with and without socks and various terrain and the only issues I had were when I ran in the rain without socks, I got myself some decent blisters but I don't think the shoes are to blame. The shoes are so light that even if they are moving around a bit I'm not noticing it at all. I have a long narrow foot to so I find it hard to get that tight fit in runners. So far I've gotten 3 years out of them but probably should have replaced them after 2. I just checked. they do not have insoles either.

Well Abebe Bikila won an olympic marathon barefoot... then he won it again the year after (first one to ever win twice in a row), but the second time he run with shoes on. So both work I guess, but sponsorship deals are a big part of the sport. Mostly though, I think what you're trained for will work the best - and since running with shoes is the norm today, most runners are trained to run with shoes.

Everybody says to slowly transition. It's lockdown time so i just ran in a rocky patio i found with my shoes on, this time forefoot striking. I couldn't even run a fourth of what I normally ran. Then, when lockdown loosened a little bit, i went out for a few barefoot runs and was completely sore after each one (couldn't walk). Just yesterday, I went out for my first 10k run and i'm not sore anymore. 10k is twice my biggest run so I basically doubled my performance with no effort

Okay , its good to see some other people running. But! BUT ! Never EVER change yourself. This guy can only talk for himself. Go barefoot and run. if it feels good, you are doing it right and how your body was meant to run. If you run like a guy who is telling you "How to" and its feeling bad, DONT do it. Every human is different.

either you would see it, or itll be small enough and your feet calloused enough that you wont notice it

Actually, the tinier glass shards, almost imperceptible, are the ones which can be really annoying. They can get stuck under your skin and become really hard to take out. Yet, they still cause some pain if you press the skin that covers them.

Hey..saw the title and came here let you in on something. Our feet were designed or evolved, whatever your perspective on life is, to run..without how to's. You get bad running technique from running with shoes on.

Sorry but too many risks to cuts and punctures because of construction. However, I do agree heel striking is nasty.
@katherinebrady6296
@katherinebrady6296 5 жыл бұрын
Heel striking is what causes knee injuries. People don't know how to run in the first place. Unless you know what you're doing, don't just buy a pair of running shoes and go running. Get a basic lesson first.

I think I've kinda ruined my life with running. Tore a tendon in my foot, and now I can't do anything. Would I have been better off in shoes? Well, I probably wouldn't have had that injury, but people get plenty of other injuries in shoes. Because I ran, no I can't do other stuff I like to do, like hiking and mountain biking. Fuck running.

That is not actually true. I have run barefoot my whole life. and just within the past year have started taking the "Proper" lessons. My feet are calloused enough to where I have stepped on glass without even knowing. the human body was designed to adapt. and ignore weakness. since pain weakens the body for a short time. the body will eventually learn to ignore it.

It's funny, my step mother always made fun of me for walking and running like this. She always told me if I didn't stop walking on my "tippy toes" she would send me to dancing classes.

there is a BIG difference walking and running like this, walking on the "tippy toes" is unnormal and a kind of disorder in your foot. But running like this barefoot is the most natural way for a human.

+WiteRastaNinja ME TOO!! I would run on my toes and was told "you run weird" so I have since then tried to go heel first. It never felt right. If you have super cushy shoes with an inch of foam in the heel, it's ok but still feels weird. and if you are going downhill with high heeled cushy shoes, forget it, you HAVE to go heel first, and it's easy to twist the ankle. I am hoping the vibrum shoes will work for me, but when I step on a large rock (say if in flip flops walking on a rocky hike) it HURTS. I'm worried the vibrum shoes won't help.
