How to run Proctorio in a virtual machine

Worth noting for some is that you can use a KVM switch (invisible to software but teat each first) to switch your display between PCs so you can leave a VM or a hard drive install undisturbed while using another computer.

Not necessary. Just use Virtual Box mouse integration option + the host key. When you press the host key, it freezes the VM mouse, and lets you escape the VM and use your normal computer, and when you click back into the VM it just looks like you weren't moving your mouse that whole time

K seeing everyone getting worried lemme break every thing down for you. So first, when you take the test, take the test on your VIRTUAL MACHINE. Some people ask wether you can go through your pdfs, the answers is yes, BUTTTT, IT HAS TO BE DONE OUTSIDE THE VIRTUAL MACHINE, i.e your host machine. Next people ask if proctorio can detect that you have a virtual machine, the answers yes but no. Basically, proctorio searches your system for the word virtual. So suppose the name Virtual Webcam, it would detect it. So in order to bypass it, you can edit the names in REGDIT. If you want to know how, just watch KZfaq videos on how to make a stealthy VM. Other than that, there's nothing else to say, if you need anything feel free to reply and ill get back to ya.

i had an exam and used this method , it worked and i passed . thanks alot , but its better if you find another windows which takes less ram and it wont slow down your pc

@@benoscar5708 i opened tabs on my host computer not on my virtual machine , in the vm i was in moodle doing the test only. btw i had to do my test out of moodle on word document , so protorio kicked me out of moodle , but that wasnt an issue because i could re-attemp the quiz

Would proctorio detect if you clicked out of the VM and onto your regular desktop or would it register as a random click?

I highly doubt a virtual machine would register ANY activity outside of the VM window

The mouse doesn't disappear in the VM, it simply ceases to move.

Did you take a whole exam within the VM, i have heared that you will be kicked out during the exam because it had detected the VM

NO, it cannot, make sure that you use good Remote software that does not have the icon come up to be seen on screen charing. But no, it cannot. you can do a proctorio check to .

@@MrStormCrow this did work for me, however I didn't have to change the virtual camera, the setting my professor set up for proctorio didnt decline my "virtual camera". I am able to access the file fine each time, BUT i have to turn camera on each time i access it.

yes, but you need to change the camera name and the microphone too if it's says virtual. If you have a Mac parallels works perfect with no changes needed.

hey, i can only find one instance of the webcam name in regedit. furthermore, my device is called FaceTime HD Camera since this is a macbook running windows. proctorio still detects virtualized webcam. can you please copy paste paths to changing the names in regedit? i think my macbook air is too slow to find the other instances and times out

You need to run in parallels. It will work perfect. There are 30 day free trials.

Uninstall Proctorio? I mean, yeah, probably, but you could just delete the VM. There's probably no reason to keep it around.

I guess, that wasn't exactly the goal of this tutorial. Does it not work? Try restarting the VM.

@@GeekLaunch I watched this video like 3 times. Did everything like you did. Restarted the VM. And when I look in devices and printers I still see the name “VirtualBox Webcam HP Wide Vision HD”. In device manager however it is “HP Wide Vision HD” as I renamed it. Any reason as to why it doesn’t change in Devices and Printers?

It's not intended to change the name in Devices and Printers, it's intended to make Proctorio think the name changed.

@@KidDestiny no your right because in a real proctored site like pearson vue it still catches the virtual machine and says cant take exam on vm take it on a physical computer. I pass all the cam/mic/screen checks. then does a deeper check, and you are correct his fix worked for device manager name but in settings devices my wedbcam is still called "virtualBox ....webcam"

This sucks. I did ALL OF THIS on my own, but in a Windows 7 machine. I figured everything out without this video, even the last regedit step, but that's where it didn't work for me. For some reason it doesn't let me change the name of the webcam in regedit. It says "error changing to new value" or something

@@imstupidbut I did. It worked perfectly on a Windows 10 machine if I remember correctly. But this was a year ago, so keep in mind Proctorio may have changed things

VM's are "sandboxed" so there is no way for a "guest" virtual machine to know what is happening on the "host" machine. Open PDF's away.

What if the proctor move your mouse and control your keyboard to see if you’re using a VM?

I'm not sure how that would work. Proctorio is only aware of the mouse pointer that exists within the confines of the virtual machine. The host merely relays the mouse pointer location on the host to the virtual machine, but the virtual machine cannot control the mouse of the host.

@@GeekLaunch say if someone else is taking the exam on my behalf using team viewer. The person remotes into the computer then access the VM and proceed to the test system check. Of course I have to show my ID and scan the room but what if the proctor wants to play with the keyboard to see if someone is using a VM by trying to exit full screen or whatever? Also, how does the remote user know when to take the exam so that two mouse won’t be moving? Can remote access users hear the proctor as well like the tester will? Is team viewer or anydesk completely hidden and undetected?

The virtual machine does not have access to anything running on the host machine except that which is provided through the VM manager.

@@phil72562 Use teamviewer on your host. The person on the other side of teamviewer can use your host and because of that also the vm. The vm only sees proctorio and thats it. Everything you do on your host is not detected. Even if you open a pdf file or chrometab on the host. Anyway the only thing you need to is to sit behind your webcam thats it
