How To Safely Back Out Of A Parking Space When Your View Is Obstructed
It can be enough of a challenge by itself to back out of a stall in a busy parking lot. You have to watch for pedestrians all around you, oncoming traffic in the row behind you, other drivers backing out, and many other things. But it makes it all the more difficult when there are vehicles on either side of you blocking your view. You can't see what's coming down the parking lane until your vehicle has backed out quite a ways, which makes the whole process more tense and dangerous. In this video, I give you some tips on how to safely back out of your parking space when your view is obstructed. Two thoughts: 1. Ease and safety begins with choosing your parking spot. If you are less experienced and/or have a large vehicle, try to choose a parking spot in a less crowded area. If the area is safe to park further away from the door, consider it. Parking next to a shopping cart return might also be good. While there is still an obstacle on that side, it isn't a bright shiny new vehicle that will call your insurance if you tap it. 2. Backing requires checking and rechecking during the full movement. Observing the area as you return to your vehicle is helpful. Did someone else just get in their car close by? They may begin backing before you. Is a family six cars down getting the kids out? They may be behind you when you are ready to move. Look for potential hazards as you approach your car.

Great ideas! Making it easier/safer to back out can begin before you even park in the first place. Sometimes I do park farther out where it’s less crowded, and the few extra steps don’t hurt me either. And I very much like your thoughts on checking out the area around your vehicle as you’re walking to it so you can see what’s going on or might likely happen! Thanks for the comment.

***Beginners, please note that backing INTO a parking spot is much easier because of how the front end swings around. Especially for a longer vehicle like a pickup truck with Crew Cab it is almost the ONLY way you can park. This is because the wheels that steer are in the area where there is less obstructions to worry about. The wheels that enter the parking spot first are the fixed rear wheels and there is more freedom for the front to swing because it is in the open unlined paved area.

I think it’s sad how few views this has. As someone who drives around 1000 miles a week on average I think more people should be watching. 4:43 "Only turn enough so that you stay within the lines"....I feel so dumb. I dont know why I didnt think of something so simple lol. I always worry the front of my car will hit the car next me when backing out and trying to turn more tightly. All I had to do was keep it inside the line and then I be able turn the wheel early if there are cars parked close behind. What a great, detailed and informative video!!

Hi Stan, Thank you for this video. As a new driver, this helps me a lot to understand how the steering works when reversing. You clearly demonstrated it, and I am confident that I can demonstrate the same during today's assessment test. I've practiced this a few times with my instructor right with me, but I get nervous when I have to perform it by myself for the test. I can't wear seatbelt while backing ( Im only 4,11.) I did all this and still had an incident. Never had a backing up problem in 45 years. Smaller lower vehicles are at a blind spot disadvantage next to huge vehicles.

The best and safest way to park is either pull straight through to the space in front of you if available or just back into the space. And most of all, don't rely on your backup camera. Cameras do not always give you a full view of what is behind you.

Parking a pickup truck is much harder than a regular vehicle. The turning radius is larger and judging where the rear corners of the truck are relative to the cars behind you is hard since the tailgate obscures one's view. The side mirrors are not flat so that distorts the image and makes it hard to judge the distance to the vehicle in the rear.

You find it safer to reverse into the parking space.Its easier to then drive out with no limited view restrictions when leaving parking space.

I do like that about backing in. It’s so much easier to then drive out of the space. I especially like it when we go to a big event and there are a lot of vehicles parked close together. When it’s time to leave, it’s much safer and easier to drive forward and merge into the line of moving cars, than trying to back out and hope someone will make room for me to do that.

I have to backout of a parking space straight into oncoming traffic on a main roadway, I parked nextdoor at a post office to go to the library. Buf ths postal worker is getting miffed.

Stan I have to park in a small busy car park for work. And I get stuck sometimes as there are often cars parked close behind me and either side. I really struggle reverse parking so I go nose in. Which means having to reverse out when I leave. The last two times doing so I’ve had to do about a 9 point turn to get out. There’s always some smart ass man watching me looking amused. Is there no easier way to get out? Getting tired of people watching me and smiling/laughing

Those men watching and looking amused aren’t worth worrying about, and don’t let them distract you from what you’re doing. Sounds like you have very little space to back out from, so you’re probably doing the best you can under the circumstances. Try and find the widest spot spot you can. If you’re going to be driving off to your left, park as close to the right side of the space as you safely can so that the front of your car will have a little more room to swing outward to the left as you back out. And vice versa if you’re driving off to your right. But if it’s a really small car park, I know you may not have room to be able to get over to the left or right to any great degree. So you may already be doing the best you can with what you have to work with. Just don’t let the jerks distract you from your backing.

I have a question which is, is it important or even useful to check both sides or just the side you are backing out in because what if pedestrians or cars are coming from either direction?

Yes, your emergency flashers would be best in that situation. And if you have any doubt about which signal to use when you're backing out to one side or the other, just use your emergency flashers also.

I have my road test tomorrow. Im 34. Anxiety and bad decision making prevented me from getting my license. I finally straightened things out and passed my knowledge test 1st try last week. However, im incredibly nervous about backing into a spot and my etiquette as im driving..im a single full custody dad and i NEED this license. Ive been driving with a passenger for years so im confident in normal driving. Please tell me im overthinking...will i fail for not reverse parking well my 1st try?

Depends on your state. In mine, we just needed to pull off to the side and perform reverse backing. I strongly suggest getting driving lessons or at getting a car you can drive all day in so you can get comfortable. With the width of your vehicle and how it works. Tips for the test: When at a stop sign, stop long enough to feel the car gently rock back then go. Smog after every turn, lane change, and even when backing. Stop at a sign, then slowly inch out so you can see. Slightly exaggerate how you're looking. It's better with practice, and these are skills you build! As for the video, I'm very sure you do not have ro do this, but you WILL once you get your drivers license:) and you WILL get it. Don't be shamed if nerves wreck you the first driving attempt

@jasmineclark552 I PASSED!!! Didn't even have to reverse park. The instructor was very nice. He only got me for one thing and that was no blinker backing out of a space.
