What to do when your small boat capsizes. Capsizing is a common occurrence to any dinghy sailor. You must be familiar with the technique to pull the boat back up again. This video will take you through what to do to correct a capsized dinghy sailaboat. We show you where to go, what to do, and what happens when the boat is back upright.

Geez. Wish I could go back in time and watch this a few hours ago. We had a hell of a time getting our Apollo sail boat righted after we rigged her up wong and capsized her in a gust of wind. We ended up having to pull the pin holding the mainsail up so it could pivot and we could get her in close to shore. There we righted her, bailed her out, and limped back to the marina. We're still licking our wounds. We lost a fair amount of gear, our jib, and we damaged some equipment. Honestly, it's 100% on us. We thought we understood enough about how it all works... we were wrong.

My 11 year old daughter and I (not that sporty😏) capsized in suddenly appearing strong gusts. Dispite righten up the boat was pretty easy, getting back in the boat for me was hard as hell! My daughter got easily on board like shown in the video. But for me absolutely no chance getting up on the side due to no hold and a surprisingly high freeboard. As I tried it from the rear, the boat accelerated, I lost grip, and it sailed away.. 😨 For me alone, there wouldnt been even a chance to get back on the boat. But after about 30 meter my daughter managed to capsize the boat again. (Despite she is experienced in using Trapez and foresail, to maneuver the boat back to me alone in this conditions, is simply not practicable. In our case we had to bring down the main sail (forsail had been rolled away before) and than it was possible for me, after righten it up for the second time, to get back inside the boat from the rear. By the way, the lifewest (surfer version) that I weared, made it for me even more difficult to get over the edge. Only in wetsuit it was much easier. The bahia is a family boat - but be aware that it is much more complicate to get in as for example in a laser vago due to the higher freeboard.

Next time try coming in over the stern. Something else you can do is make a little rope strop and ask the crew to tie this to the toe strap and then use as a step. This sometimes works Bouyancy aids sometimes get in the way. I keep the front pocket empty. Another technique I use (on my single hander ) is to lift one leg over the gunwhale which then pulls the boat over a little and then roll in. All of this highlights the point of never sail alone with no one around to help from a powerboat so joining a sailing club is really important In time capsizing happens less! Hope this helps. What my friends and I do is I climb over the higher side as soon as it’s too late to right and have someone throw me the opposite jib sheet. It’s usually already taut and cleated but if it isn’t like if we capsized roll tacking, it will catch on the mast and as long as the opposite line is cleated will have the same effect. I’ll then stand on the centerboard, pull on the jib sheet, and roll back into the boat while my friends get scooped in.

What is the weight limit of the centerboard and does the person pulling up on this have to have a lot of upper body strength to accomplish?
@sailaboattv
@sailaboattv 11 ай бұрын
Centreboards should be strong enough for anyone to pull on. Having said that I have seen them break on old boats. Newer boats tend to use very strong composites so I haven’t seen these break ever. It is all about technique. As I explain in the video it is a gentle and sustained pressure that should pull the boat up. If inverted use two people to get the boat in the flat capsize then the lighter person generally then swims around to be scooped aboard. Best thing is to practice in controlled and light winds and never sail alone so another boat could come and rescue you. (Leaving the boat until a powerboat can help) joining and sailing in a club environment is our overwhelming advice. As they should provide safety cover at the busy times Hope this helps! Everyone capsizes, it’s just part of sailing and the more you do it the better you get!

@sailaboattv
@sailaboattv 11 ай бұрын
If the boat is positioned so the final pull has the sail in the water downwind the boat just comes up. If the sail is the other way round with the mast pointing towards the wind there is a chance the boat flips right over pushing the sailor underneath and then pop up on the other side. When in that situation I try to lift the tip of the mast clear of the water by just a few inches. This seems to then help the boat to rotate slightly and prevent the over flip. As mentioned in my previous reply sail at a club, practice the drill and resist strong wind sailing until your experience increases Happy sailing! Tim Sailaboat

The trick is a gentle and sustained pressure on the ropes to pull the boat up. You shouldn’t be straining which is wrong technique. Have a practice in light winds with another boat nearby. It’s a bit like riding a bike. Once you learn the techniques it all falls into place.

@@sailaboattv I tried to right an RS Quest by myself as part of a beginning sailing course. It has rungs on the bottom of the hull that we were instructed to hold on to, and also place our feet on, while making kind of a "C" shape with our body. I tried it, and the boat would not budge. Eventually, my arms just gave out. I had to be dragged by my PFD back into the boat, lol. I'm about 110 pounds -- not sure if that makes a difference.

This happened to me on my second sail and the mast sank. There was a strong wind. I tried for a long time, but I failed. I was rescued by a small motorboat that tied a cable to the sunken mast and the small sailboat returned to its normal position. It was very exciting! Thanks for the tips. :)

@@sailaboattv I agree with this take. The best hope is any puff on the affected side will make you wait before you can even get the boat back up. Therefore you'll come up in a relative lull. And as long as the mainsheet is slack, it should be unlikely you'll re-capsize. The scariest thing would be if you accidentally jibed while trying to pull your crew aboard, but if you handle your tiller like the demo crew did, that wouldn't happen.

Thanks for the comments here. As Cpt Chayns says 40 foot boats do not compare here. Big boat sailing is a different experience with large metal keels under the boat that will pull the boat back up should it capsize. (In the UK we tend to call this broaching). In my experience it is extremely rare to be caught out in 40 foot waves unless you are deep in the southern ocean. I have been out in extremely rough conditions and never felt unsafe in a big boat.
