In this Video we cover how to do slab reefing and how to control main sail shape when reefed. Covering ways to reduce weather helm.

Excellent teaching, Cranston. Your detailed explanation and useful camera angles make for super learning in real application. I’ll be trying some new techniques soon.

Excellent demo and points re balancing the rig. Makes me want to change some things on my boat starting with tack reef reduction. “Wiping out is not fast”-I can vouch for that.

Good to see another Santana on the water. Your reefing system looks well organized and very functional.

Thanks! Do you also have a 3030?

5⁰ to 7⁰ of rudder angle is usually optimum. It's much more efficient to get lift off the rudder rather than the keel and so you will make less leeway and better Vmg.

Awesome video, I used to race on a Santana 525, I bet your 30 is fun

Great video man! My reefing lines and halyard are all at the main. I've considered running aft to cockpit, but I do know when I upgraded my reefing system, it was a massive improvement! Cheers!

Great video. I see you have a Barton boomstrut. And dumped the topping lift. I am installing one on my boat right now. Should I dump the topping lift also?. Thoughts?

The Boomkicker came with Bravo, My last boat had a topping lift.... I would never go back.

Very informative. Quick question. What are you trying to demonstrate on the polar compass that you keep showing? I am not sure what triangle I should be focusing on. I guess I’m just not sure what a polar compass even does. Thanks in advance

Great question. I did not cover that. The polars are a theoretical speed the boat should go for a given wind value. It's just target boat speed in a percentage value. The Blue arrows are VMG (velocity made good) predictions, The Fastest TWA upwind and downwind. So two for Port (upwind, downwind) and two for Starboard. In theory if you follow the triangles, that will be your fastest way upwind or downwind.

I like the simplicity of that presentation, I tried looking around the app store for a similar looking app icon, but could not find it. Is it home baked, or do you have an app name I could search for? TIA. Enjoyed this very much, btw.@@CruisingwithCranston

Just wondering g what you rigged up in instruments for the polar display. It looks like opencpn if so how did you get all the data linked up We had a santana35 many moons ago.

What block and ring are you using for the first reef tack if I might ask?
@CruisingwithCranston2 ай бұрын
It's a carbo 40mm and a 3/16 1-¼ SS ring. I originally had it running thru the grommet, but it was giving me a problem. The line would pull the sail through the grommet when reefing. I have also seen low friction rings installed instead of adding a grommet.

At 20.40 you are talking about the screen with the Polar and you say: "we lost 10%. Sorry: I don,t see that on that screen: can you please teach me? Thanks! Hans from Holland

You kept referring to wiping out. What is wiping out?
