You rock. I’m dealing with the same thing. You don’t need the background music. No one, ever, says, man I wish that how-to video had music in it. Never happened. As a creator, you want it to be more attractive in every aspect. As a sound engineer, who is literally addicted to music, I’ll be the first to tell you how golden silence can be. Not so much silence itself, just less distraction from your words and even the content when you aren’t speaking

Thanks for the info and taking the time to put it here. I'm 85 yr. old and haven't painted a car in 35 years. Got a truck that needs some cosmetic work, so been watching u-tube to learn the changes that have been developed---- and WOW!!! 3000 grit paper!!! I once used 600 and thought it cut about as good as a piece of "waxed paper"

I painted the drivers door on my Mercedes SLK yesterday and the result was disappointing. However, it's mainly just because the clear coat I used was so underwhelming and lacking in shine. Having seen what you achieved with the two stage wet sand and then good polish, I am 100% confident I can get a much better result, when I re-address the job tomorrow. Thanks so much!

I just had some panels come out like that. I was using high solid clear and a new gun I was trying instead of my trusty W400(which I know how to set up for clear and it doesn't let me down). Bur the dust specs...always. no matter how much I clean, tack, wet floor.... But bad orange peel, texture, bleah! That does not make me happy! I ended up sanding the panels and flow coating with the W400. Still gotta denib. Still gonna buff. But what a difference going back to my normal gun. I need to stick with what works. This is a good video, putting a problem filled job out there. Things happen and this shows it can happen to anyone and its not the end of the world👍

Great video. I'm surprised you started with 1500 grit over 1200 or a 1000. Is that because it was still soft? I'm doing my first paint job with POR15 2k Urethane... I got the temp too hot on the first coat and it was drying too fast without leveling out. It's bit worse than yours but I'm feeling confident about fixing it with an aggressive cut and buff.

@@GarageNoise Your generosity & kindness will not go unpaid Chris. Thank's for being so cool & of course, thanks for your willingness to share the secrets of your very difficult craft. Even after studying for weeks it's so easy to totally blow it. I've been spraying houses my whole life & I still got a damn orange peel on my truck base coat....frustrating but fixable, thanks to you.

Does the clear die back, because you buffed it too soon? How many coats did you give it?? Three good coats to sand the clear coat, to give it a moderate sand and buff it a second time??
@GarageNoise
@GarageNoise Жыл бұрын
No buffing has no effect on die back. Die back has application or the clear coat. Two good coats is sufficient to wet sand and buff. This had two. You should oly have to sand it once in this process. Hope this helps,appreciate the support!

Just a quick question. When you transitioned to your DA for the finer grits, did you use water or dry sand?
@GarageNoise
@GarageNoise 2 жыл бұрын
I basically dry sand everything. The only time I wet sand is when I cutt and buff clear. That is just what I've found works best for me.

Should i start with a 1500 on an older paint job that has some orange peel and bird poop stains or should i use a 3000?
@GarageNoise
@GarageNoise 3 жыл бұрын
Older paint i would start with 2000 then 3000. If you start with 3000 it won't do much to help with scratch removal. You could try 1500 on a small area be careful tho it will be easier to sand thru a paint thats older.

Can anything like this be done with a single stage paint which came out the same way? Can it be made smooth then clear coated possibly if not?

Absolutely, even the 2000 could be buffed. I really just like to limit the buffing time with a finer scratch. Appreciate the comment and support!

If I paint my car outside where there's plenty of debris, should I wet sand the base coats as well or just apply all the coats and 2 clear coats and sand that?
@GarageNoise
@GarageNoise Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't just wet sand the basecoat. I would inspect the base coat between coats if you see a spec of dust let it dry and then dry sand the dust out with 600 and apply another coat of base then clear when it's covered and clean. Hope this helps appreciate the comment and support!

@@GarageNoise thank you so much for the reply, I was thinking that if I respray the base after sanding, I'll just get the same result with dust specs and who knows what else. Can I just do two layers of base and sand it with 1500 to 3000 to get rid of the contaminants and just spray clear coat over a sanded 3000 base? I'll have to be very creative since I am looking to paint it white and I'm thinking of fixing the defects by polishing alot. Thank you so much for the reply, awesome video.

What’s the key to spraying with minimal orange peel seems like no matter what I do it comes out textured
@GarageNoise
@GarageNoise 2 жыл бұрын
Getting glass like clear comes down to air pressure in relation to paint volume. So if your getting orange peel , you have too little air pressure for the amout of paint that's coming out of the gun. Other factors can effect this like what temperature your painting in or is your compressor producing enough air. Check out this video hope it help! Thanks for supporting the channel!

What pad and compound did you use after the 5000? Thanks
@GarageNoise
@GarageNoise 2 жыл бұрын
I use a soft foam pad. The soft is typically the black. 3m pad but if you buffing 5000 the brand doesn't really matter. I've switched over to wizards finish cut. I like it, doesn't leave so much filler behind . Good question,thanks for watching brother! amzn.to/3b9rSzO

I painted my car flat black with with spray cans and it turned out okay. It all laid down smooth and when I wet sanded it with 2000 grit and it made it smoother but there’s streaks all over the car. I know spray painting won’t be perfect but I’m on a budget and did it on the street outside of my house. Is it normal for it to have the streaks? It looks like the front door did on the truck you were painting but mine has obvious streaks of every motion when I sanded. Do I just need to sand it down with 5k on an orbital sander to make it 1 solid color?
@GarageNoise
@GarageNoise 3 жыл бұрын
First thing i need to know is what kind of paint you used? You said flat black, flat black is not designed to be wet sanded and buffed. Buffing shines it up. Thats most likely the problem your having. If you painted with an urethane enamel that can be wet sanded and polished.

@@GarageNoise I used rust oleum acrylic enamel. It said on the website it was for automotive. I tried wiping it down with clean rags and acetone before. About 30 minutes Ago I washed it with dawn soap and it got rid of the streaks but still looks a little chalky. At this point I don’t mind having a gloss on it, I just want it to look decent.
@GarageNoise
@GarageNoise 3 жыл бұрын
It looks chalky because it's flat black . If it was gloss black it wouldn't be chalky looking. Flat black looks good but know this , its not made to be polished. The only way to get rid of the calky look would be to respray it. Then don't wet sand and buff it. Sorry this is probably not what you want to hear but i hope this helps.

My paint exactly looks like this, even base coat was dry and looked like this but i did put clear coat on top of it and now it exactly looks like this problem. Will your solution work even if the base coat looked like orange peel? Question ??
@GarageNoise
@GarageNoise 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, if you clear over rough or orange peel base coat you can wet sand the clear out like glass. You should however apply an extra coat of clear ,so at least 3 coats of clear . This will give you more clear to work with when color sanding.
@GarageNoise
@GarageNoise 4 жыл бұрын
Another side note, make sure your using the proper reducer for the temp your spaying in. This should eliminate dry spay. Also the clear catalyst needs to be for right temp your sprayin in. this is very important .

@@adnansgarage ok, you have already applied the paint? Is that correct? If you have, go ahead and clear it use a 2k clear in a can if you are able. Then let it dry for 15 min and apply another coat repeat for a third coat. Then i would let it dry at least 24 hours. Then you can color sand. I have a video how to pant your fender watching this may help.
