Here's the easy steps to saving a bird's life who flies into a window. Watch as I help this red-breasted sapsucker after it crashes into my house and what it does after it's recovered.

When a bird hits your window, you gotta act quick. A box with ventilation, but secure and not too airy, like a shoebox with holes and a closed lid is best. Make sure it is in a dark quiet space away from other animals. Treat it like recovering from a migraine. Dark and quiet space required. If the bird is lying on its back and alive, you must sit it upright, so the circulation can begin again. Do not ever leave a bird on its back, or on its side, this is not good for circulation and respiratory recovery. They are panting, because they are in shock. If you have to use objects to keep it in an upright position, use them, but loosely, as not to put pressure on the birds body, only enough to prop them in upright position. The beak must be secured in its natural upright position, as this is how they breathe, so some people use balled up paper, folded cloth, or cardboard to secure beaks in upright and straight forward position. Do not attempt to feed or water the animal, as different birds have different diets, and their bodies are in shock, they’re not gonna be hungry, they’re gonna be in shock. Never place pressure on the birds head or chest when picking it up and keeping it secure, because these 2 areas, are the most common impact areas for window collisions. Most birds, especially with longer beaks, usually impact with their chests, as when they collide beak first, this action forces their heads up, and this is what causes them to be winded. If it is head impact, they usually suffer severe concussion or even fractures, and eventually most of these collision types die. Even if they fly away afterwards, they may still die from internal injuries like brain haemorrhaging.

Same thing happened to me. A small bird hit my window. And it fell on the floor and it was panting. I picked it up and brought the bird in. I put him in a box (it had holes to breathe) so it wouldn't stress out. After an hour he calmed down and stood up and his eyes were wide open and curious. I thought he was ready so I put him outside and waited for him to take off. It took him a while, but then he flew away! I felt really proud of that rescue and I was so happy he made it at the end. It is pretty stressful when a bird hits your window, but at least the bird who hit your window had a happy ending! It's all worth it in the end!

It’s not a natural way to die for them at all. Buildings and windows are not natural structures.

Look up some ways to prevent window collisions. They’re flying to them either bc they can’t see the window, or they see a tree/perch reflection. You can draw vertical lines on the window with a paint pen (vids on YT). The lines can be replaced w dots in a vertical, linear arrangement, too. Ontario actually started mandating that new buildings be bird friendly, which is rad of them.

The one that just recently flew in the window a baby woodpecker Just the other night it was an owl as I heard a bang took the flashlight and went to the front door Sure enough his big eyes looking at me, blinded by my light. Left to go inside for a few and he was gone. Had to check. This large window needs something two birds in one week. One dead one survived tells me I need to talk to the landlord on what to do.

I checked the next day and the baby woodpecker was gone. My hopes he just passed out and flew away.

We just let go a spotted dove this morning. Yesterday I was at work and it flew straight into the window. I put it in a shoebox which had a hole for air anyway. Kept it overnight, never made a peep. Anyway, this morning, my husband and opened the lid and it flew onto a nearby tree.

I tried to do this but sadly the bird was bleeding from its head and I didn’t know what to do when I searched it up so it died

I tried to help the little birdy that struck the 2nd floor bedroom window. I left it on the roof for a while to see if it can recover by itself. After 15 min, I still saw him struggling, I decided to take it down from the roof as it was struggling to get back up. It may have broken its neck as it was limp and rearing backward. It can't get upright. I got a ladder and tried to wake it up, but it got startled and moved away from me. After some struggling I managed to get it down but it still not doing well. I left him alone to recover but it show no sign of getting better. After a while I decided maybe it needed water as the beak was opening and closing. I got a box and a towel to keep him from the wind and tried giving it water with a straw. At first it seem to respond to the water, but then moment later it stopped moving. No more struggling, no movement at all. I think it may have just died right then and there. Not sure if there was anything I can do there if it indeed broke its neck. I'm keeping it in the box with the towel to make sure it's not just playing dead. I'll update this comment tomorrow to see the verdict.
