Saving kale seeds is actually surprisingly easy to do! You'll get hundreds of seeds to keep or share and you'll never need to buy kale seeds again if you don't want to! Here's how (and why!) to save your own kale seeds!

Who are we?
I'm Kaylee: a garden coach, permaculture designer and homesteader. Almost a decade ago, my wife (Lindy) and I said "farewell" the convenient life and set out on a mission to "grow food, live simply & cultivate happiness". We started a small 3/4 acre homestead in Idaho and learned everything we could about living sustainably and growing our own food. In 2020, we moved to the beautiful Pacific Northwest and began creating the 2-acre permaculture homestead of our dreams! And now we are taking you along for the journey with new videos each week!

I just finished harvesting my 1 kale plant I let go to seed. Counting 100, then eyeballing 1000 and weighing it all... I got close to 100k seeds from 1 plant lol. Not to mention the lbs of leaves I had from it the year before. I enjoy how the seed pods just explode when you touch the tip haha. And then the empty pods are a really good mulch material. I recommend a 5 gallon bucket. Put a whole branch in upside down and then squeeze and gently twist, moving down the branch. Just fill that bucket with broken pods and seeds. Then use a colander to separate the pods and seeds. Then winnow. I started doing it 1-by-1 like you were but I had too many. I spent hours doing the bucket method lol.

Thank you for the video. Im growing organic Red Russian, organic Premier, organic Tronchuda Beira, organic blue scotch curled kale in containers in my veggie garden. So far only my organic Tronchuda Beira kale plants have started flowering (in 7a Washington, DC) Im waiting for those flowers to get pollinated and I'll definitely be saving the kale seeds!

Nice summary of things to consider. Oh whoopsie 3:05: you mention exactly what i wrote in the comments on your onion seed video, as i hadn't heard you mention it there, about the acclimatisation over the generations 😳, glad you know about that. But hey someone reading the comments might not have yet heard you mention this, so i hope that's ok. Love the dog-pergola, and the hawkbit in flower inn the grass underneath 👍🏽. Yes só no issues with cold that allowing them to self-seed will give you beautiful 10 inch plants by mid March, so all you need to do is transplant them if they've chosen to grow in an awkward place. 🙏🏽🌱🌱🌱🌳🕊💚🌱🌱🌱

Thanks so much for sharing. I wish o would have watched earlier. I pulled the pods too soon 😮. Off the stalks but I’ll try to dry anyway. Please comment if you have suggestions. 😊
